  1. Hi Priya, I hope you are fine. Thank you for telling us how your mom oils your hair dear. Oil in the ear is really uncomfortable but this is also very good for the ears. I do it like once a month to my daughters as they hate it. As a kid, I use to hate the same. Does your mom also tap your head after applying the oil? And when tapping do you hear the chap chap sound? I believe your hair will be dripping with oil when she oils. About the face, oil (specially coconut oil) is very good for skin also. It has lots of vitamins that nourishes the skin and that's why it's good for the hair as well. Keep sharing your posts with us dear.

  2. Dear Mani, thanks for posting. I understand that you (and others) might be busy to keep posting daily. But please do post whenever you have some time. Yes, go ahead with the gift dear. I am sure they will like it. As you said, oil protects the hair in whatever way it may be exposed to damage. As for the hair decoration, as long as you are happy with it, then you can do it. I know it is common for ladies, but for men it's quite rare. But as I always say, no one can judge and as long as the person is happy, then there is no problem. Indeed nites are quite hard to remove and cannot be done alone. Hence you can ask your neighbour and maids to spend more time doing that than lice combing when you are at their place. You can so the self lice combing and they take care of the nit picking. Do keep us updated Mani.

  3. Hello Raj, how are you? Thanks for your usual posts. I was late in replying this time. Glad to see that you are trying our different hair styles with heavily oiled hair. Any hairstyles look so neat with heavily oiled hair. I am really happy to note that the flower girls are now oiling at their workplace. That's really good because we spend the maximum of time at the work place. You could have proposed to oil their hair as well dear. But again, I would suggest you to keep your hair heavily oiled always as they did expect to see with oiled hair dear. I am sure the maids were happy to see your hair heavily oiled when you came back. You don't have to worry if the flower girls or maid decide to oil your hair anytime. You just have to comply and allow them to do it dear. Keep oiling and posting!
    Thank you

  4. Hello Namratha, I am fine thanks, hope you are good too. The maids were happy that I got my hair oiled by the flower girls and they encouraged it more. On Wednesday morning I washed my hair after some oiling in the morning. The maids said since it is oiling till dripping today, the flower girls will join us. Around afternoon, while we were in the courtyard combing, they arrived. They told the maids about how they oiled my hair at the store. The maids said they can oil my hair anytime they feel like. The reason they started oiling at the store is due to the gift of oil bottles, I gave them. So now whenever they find time, they oil their hair.
So we all started oiling our hair. I combed all of their hair and they took turns oiling my hair till dripping. They oiled each other while dripping too. After the break one of the flower girls sat in front of me and oiled my face too. While oiling the flower girl suggested to the maids to come over the next day and pick up a fresh batch of flowers. One of the maids suggested that they might send me if they are busy with housework. I hope to oil my hair a bit as I don't want to get my hair oiled at the store.Namratha, any suggestions. Then they all tied long braids and put flowers around it.
Again at night more combing and oiling was done.

    Thanks

  5. Hi Raj, I am doing fine, thank you... just a bit busy with everything at home. I am sure the maids were happy with the flower girls oiling their hair. That should be something normal for you now. Yes, the gifts were very useful and maybe you can give them the oil bottles at regular intervals to ensure they also oil their hair at their place of work. I would advise you to meet them whenever you can so that you can oil their hair too. Why don't you want to get your hair oiled at the store? Getting it oiled is the most important dear. Where you are getting it oiled is not that much important. What is the reason?
    Take care,

  6. Hello Nupura, welcome to the blog dear and thank you for posting. To the other bloggers, please note that Nupura posted in the older thread but since it has become too lengthy, I am replying on this new thread. I would encourage all of you to post on this new thread now. As you said in your post Nupura, oiling early morning is really a good thing. When I do that, it makes the whole day look good and relaxing. So you also have a routine of oiling till dripping on Wednesdays, that's very good! You can now adopt another routine of oiling till dripping from Friday night to Sunday evening/Monday morning. We will be then sharing the same routine. I also note that after oiling till dripping on Wednesday morning, you had your bath and it seems from your post that you then washed your hair. In this case, I would suggest to do the oiling till dripping on Tuesday night and leave it overnight. Then Wednesday morning, you wash your hair and oil it again when it is damp. After your lunch, when your mom loosened your hair, did she oil it again? Did you go to school with open but oiled hair then? Oiling before sleeping is also very good as it improves the quality of sleep which is beneficial for the whole body. I hope you like my suggestions and try your best to adopt them dear. Please keep us updated.
    Happy oiling,
    Namratha

  7. Hello Nupura here! On Wednesday morning after my mother oils my hair till dripping, I don't wash my hair the same day. I wash it on Friday morning after which my mother oils my hair till dripping again! I wash my hair only on Monday! And till Monday night my hair is dry the whole day but in the night my mother oils my hair very heavily till dripping before sleeping. And then she directly oils my hair on Wednesday till dripping but on Thursday she oils my hair lightly and on Friday again she oils my hair till dripping. In short, my hair is oiled till dripping every alternate days. :)

  8. Hello Namratha, glad to know all is good. Well, the thing is that I always get my hair oiled heavily everyday by the maids. In the morning the days I wash my hair, for a few hours my hair is dry before being oiled. I go to the flower shop for an errand, not to get my hair oiled. They should understand I am going to get my hair oiled heavily later anyway. I like my hair being dry for some hours. I hope this answers your question.
Yesterday I had my hair washed, so as the maids were busy they asked me pick up their packet of flowers. I tried making an excuse but they said not to worry. I just want some more hours for my hair to be dry. So before I went I took some oil and rubbed it in my hair. I thought seeing my hair oiled they would not bother me. When I reached the store one of the flower girls saw me and said come inside, I said how long will it take as I am in a hurry. She said like ten mins as she has some customers to take care of. As I went in the back room and sat, the other flower girl came in with a oil bottle, her long hair open and oiled heavily. She came and sat in front of me and said to comb her hair. I did that, after a while the other flower girl came with the packets. I got ready to leave and she said you oiled your hair. I said yes, then she said it is very little and she made me sit down and poured a lot of oil and started oiling. After oiling and combing all of us heavily oiled hair. As the flowers girls took turn to attend the store, I was there for more than an hour. They even made me tie long braids and flowers too.
When I reached home the maids were happy to see my hair heavily oiled, as they were oiling their hair. I again had to comb their hair and more oiling was done. The maids also had flowers in their hair too.
Today being Friday, it is going to to be oiling till dripping. Right now I get to wash my hair and enjoy my non oily hair.

    Please advise Namratha.

    Thanks

  9. Hi Nupura, I hope you are fine and thanks for your post. I wanted to ask you something following the routine you detailed. If your mom oils your hair till dripping in the morning, then do you go to school with oil dripping hair? Is it common in India? I am sure your hair is really happy with the alternate oil till dripping and you will be seeing the improvements for sure.
Happy Friday & Happy oiling dear

  10. Hi Raj, I understand your point of view but somehow I thought that you were ready to be with heavily oiled hair most of the time. It is true that you go on errands and not necessarily to get your hair oiled, but you can also see it differently. They do it to show their care and affection. If you are not happy, maybe you can take up this topic when you are all together (flowers girls and maids). Then, all of you try to find a compromise and a best solution to keep all of you happy. I personally find what they did a good thing. Sometimes, when neighbors come to my home for a chat, while oiling my hair I will also suggest them the same. And if they want, I will oil their hair happily. Same for my daughters' friends dear. Maybe if you take it more positively, you can also ask the flower girls to allow you to oil their hairs. You can even oil it till dripping as you know they lack time at their workplace. It's just all about communication and compromising where everyone is happy. Just for information, my hair also remains without oil for around one hour or so because I will oil even when the hair is still damp from washing.

  11. Hello all bloggers, I hope you are all doing fine. As today is Friday, it's oiling day! I hope you will all spend the weekend with oil dripping hair or at least heavily oiled hair. I just wanted to share a small incident that happened today. As usual, I have oiled my hair haevily aearly morning and attended the household works together with MIL. Afterwards, we had our shower and when to the market for some errands (both with heavily oiled hair). We both had our hairs in buns. Once back from the market, we had some tea and sat down talking on the terrace. MIL went in the kitchen to keep the cups while I was talking to a neighbor. I was still seated when MIL simply came behind me and let my hair loose. She started pouring lots of coconut oil which was in semi-liquid state (as winter is approaching, the temperature is a bit cooler) and tapping. At that time, it felt so good specially after coming back from the market. She poured a good amount as when tapping I could hear chap chap. My neighbor also commented that weekend hair care time has come. After tapping, she poured oil again on the sides and back of my hair. Afterwards, she massaged for some time and then poured more oil and tapped. Then she took the length in her hands and poured oil all over the length while engaging the conversation with my neighbor too. She poured so much that the paste was taking time to melt and there were bits and pieces of white flakes all over my hair. She massage again and then finger combed my hair. My MIL also engaged the conversation with the neighbor and talked for a few minutes, while the oil was starting to melt on my head with the warmth of the body. MIL then massaged my face with the dripping oil and afterwards, she poured another round of oil all over the head and at this point, the neighbor was surprised and commented this is too much oil. My MIL simply smiled and said oil can never be too much for the hair and head. MIL then tapped again and made a loose bun. Then MIL asked me to oil her hair too and she sat in my place and I went behind her. I also applied a lot of oil on MIL's hair and even she had oil dripping hair afterwards. We suggested our neighbor to oil her hair as well. She has really nice hair, straightened nearly everyday it seems. Right now the hair is still in a good condition, but the so frequent straightening will surely affect the hair with time. Hence I wanted to suggest all those who do hair straightening, try to do it only when necessary. And after doing it, the next day, try to give your hair a good oiling so that it can recuperate its moisture and health. Just wanted to share this with you people and here I am typing with oil dripping from my hair.
I would request all of you (Raj, Mani, Priya, Jahnvi, Nupura and all the others who read the blog) to also post about your weekend oilings.
I wish everyone an oily weekend

  12. Hi Priya here! I know oil in the ears is very uncomfortable but, my grandmother and my mother have made it compulsory for me to get that done before every oiling session in the evening and in the morning! Everyday my mother oils my hair and almost every alternate day I get heavy oil massage till dripping. And on the rest of the days light hair oil massage , so everyday in the evening around 6:30-7:00 I get oil massage and in the morning also(because my mother makes my hair for college ,so she oils my hair lightly so that I look neat). Okay so before massaging my hair in the evening my mother puts oil in my ears and then puts cotton and she asks me to remove it in the morning and in the morning also before going to the college she does the same thing! Because I catch cold easily so it helps to keep cold away, so that's why thinking it's good for me I allow my mom to do that! So before going to the college she puts little hot oil into my ears and then puts cotton too

  13. Hello Nupura here! Hope you are doing good :)
Yes you are very correct! On Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday(Sunday is after taking bath) my mother tells me to get up little early then she asks me to comb my hair and then she massages my hair heavily till dripping. After oiling my hair she massages my face and then I go for a bath after that, but I don't wash my hair! I go to the school with dripping oil, because in my school its necessary for us to enter the school with heavily oiled hair! And once I take a bath my mother ties two tight braids before I leave for school! I am already seeing the difference !! I'll follow this routine for more 6 months and after that I'll oil my hair only once a week or something like that.

  14. Hello Priya and Nupura, thanks for your posts! I think you both have adopted the correct attitude towards your mom and elders! Welcome to this routine my dears. I am very happy and even more happy when you say you see the improvements on your hair.
Do share your weekend oiling with us and I hope you liked my earlier post

  15. Hi This is Trisha here! I am a tennis player (Lawn Tennis). And I play tennis twice a day. So every morning after playing I wash my hair with shampoo and even in the night( whenever I have to go out after tennis ) I wash my hair with shampoo. I need to wash my hair every morning because I sweat a lot! Could you suggest some nice oiling routine that helps me hair be silky even after washing everyday?

  16. Dear Namratha, thanks for your reply.
Today being Saturday, we will all meet after some time for for our oiling session and my licecombing. Yes the maids do pickup nits form my hair for around an hour and they also told me that during weekdays also they will do nitpicking sometime.
I have bought oil bottle and colourful buckles for everyone as gift. Since its hot nowadays I had a bit of itching in morning so already oiled my hairs heavily in the morning and had self licecombing for an hour. But the maids do superb licecombing on me and I get lot of relief.
Yes hair decoration is very common in females and quite rare in males but its because of the group rules I follow them. Its not because it make me happy, its because it makes my group happy. So I don't mind my oiled bun decorates with a veni or my plait with a bunch of jasmine gajras hanging in it when we are in group. Of course I don't go outdoor wearing them. Aunt believes that if anyone has long hairs regular offering should be made to the hairs in the form of flowers. You know ones during Saturday oiling session aunt was talking about her schooldays, how her mother used to oil her hairs and tie double plaits and ribbons before going to school. Then for next day (sunday) she had an idea, after oiling she took out the red ribbons and we all became schoolgirls that day. When I saw myself in the mirror at home I felt so funny with my heavily oiled hair tied in double folded plaits with red ribbons.
    Bye.. Its time for oiling....

    Regards
    Mani

  17. Hello Namratha, Hope you had a great weekend. Saturday morning I was with the maids, getting my hair combed, as they like to do it. One of the maids said she has to go to market for errands and pick up some oil too, and come back with the flower girls. So in the afternoon the other maid was oiling her hair and she asked me to comb it. While combing it I thought of your advice and took some oil and started oiling her hair. She was surprised and happy. While she was guiding me the other maid and flower girls showed up. During oiling one of the flower girls suggested that on Wednesday I should come to the store and have my hair oiled till dripping with them and they can teach me how to to oil hair. Please advise Namratha.

  18. Hello Trisha, welcome to the blog and apologies for my late reply. I understand that you need to wash your hair often because you are sweating during your practice. It's important to keep the hair clean and sweat-free as this may cause dandruff. Moreover, the hair will not be healthy as the pores of the scalped will be blocked with the sweat. What I would suggest is oiling your hair heavily before your training in the morning. This will help to protect the hair while playing and will also prevent sweat from clogging the pores of the scalp and the hair. Then, at night, whether you wash your hair again or not, you can go for a super heavy oiling till dripping and leave it soak overnight. I believe that your hair must be securely tied while playing. Hence, it would be good to oil it heavily and make a braid or bun while playing. I hope my suggestions are helpful to you.
    Thank you and keep posting

  19. Hi Mani, how are you? You are really lucky to have such good neighbors and maids to take care of your hair and lice problems dear. It is also very nice that you brought gifts for them as a token of your appreciation. I am sure they were very happy. As you said, it's always good to follow the group rules so that everyone is happy. And also since they are helping you out, I guess you will have to accept what they say (same as Raj). Twin braids with ribbon is a 'traditional' hairstyle for young students. It's quite common in India. But I honestly never saw a man with twin braids and as you said it must be quite funny-looking. Thanks for sharing with us dear and keep posting.

  20. Hi Raj,
Sorry for my late reply dear. Yes, I had a really great weekend and since it was henna week, I hennaed on Monday with MIL and yesterday had my oil bath following the usual henna. So I was quite busy and could not actually reply. I am happy that you followed my advice and oiled the maid's hair before combing. As you see, she explained and guided you how to do it better. Practice makes perfect dear. As for the Wednesday session, if you are not happy about that, I would suggest you to explain that to them and try to find a compromise. But I honestly do not see anything wrong in that. If you go to them, they will surely oil your hair till dripping but it will be an opportunity for you to oil their hair till dripping too and even style their hairs. You can ask them to guide you step by step and you can try again and again to keep their hair dripping with oil. I think this would please both the flower girls and the maids. But most importantly, you need to feel happy and at ease. If this is not the case, you need to talk and explain. I hope you will find your way out dear.

  21. Hello Namratha, I guess we all have been busy this week. I could'nt write much last time as was busy. So to continue from Saturday, we all did oiling till dripping. Then the maids and flower girls had their oily hair styled with flowers. On Sunday the maids and me did some oiling in the morning. While oiling the maids suggested that I should go to the flower girls and have oiling session with them. They even suggested I take a big bottle of oil with me and give it to them. Then around late afternoon. The flower girls showed up and all of us did oiling till dripping. I oiled their hair too and I got a lot of guidance as one of them would sit with me and help me. My hands were so sticky with oil. So the maids said I will come on Wednesday. The flower girls were happy to hear it.
On Monday I got to wash my hair and again the maids and I had heavy oiling later in the afternoon. On Tuesday same routine and got to wash my hair on Wednesday.
On Wednesday the maids gave me a bag which contained a jar of pure coconut oil and small bottle of castor oil. When I reached the store around afternoon, the flower girls called me inside and were disappointed that my hair was dry. They said lot of oiling will be done. I gave them the bag and were happy to see the gifts. All of us sat and, one of them in front of me, I opened her hair and started combing and oiling., the other one sat behind me and open my hair and combed it. Then she took large amount of coconut paste and pasted it on my head and started tapping it. After some time both of them changed position and I was combing and oiling. After an hour all of us had oil till dripping. They taught me a new hairstyle which I helped them both with. Afterwards they massaged my hands and face. After a break they mixedcastor oil and again oiling was done. After some time all of us had shiny oily hair.
After I got back home they maids complemented the oiling and they said we will oil more later. So during evening whole watching TV, the maids combed my hair and oiled it too. Now the maids want me to oil their hair more often. What do you think Namratha ?

  22. Hi Raj, yes this week has been very much busy. The kids will be on holidays as of next week. Thank you for sharing your weekend oiling routine. Maybe you can detail how your oiled their hair and the guidance they gave. We can also try to adopt the same things. I am sure the flower girls were happy to see you with the oil bottles. I note that you have used coconut paste as well. Is winter nearing in India too? I also wanted to ask you something, while you were oiling, did you receive the visit of any clients? What were their reaction? Any clients came after oiling as well? Did they see all of you with oil dripping hairs? What did they say about this? Oiling more often is nothing but beneficial for the hair. So it's a good practice to adopt dear. Always bear in mind the positive side and we need to try to see the minimum positive in everything and focus on this only. As for me, today is Friday and it's my favorite day. I have oiled in the morning as usual (heavily but not dripping) and I will now start cleaning. After cleaning, I will have my shower and I will oil heavily till dripping today. I wish all of you a good weekend and lots of heavy oiling. Please share your weekend oiling sessions.

  23. Hello Namratha, hope you had a great weekend. The flower girls were very happy to see the oil bottles. Like you said you want to know about the oiling session. The flower girls oiling is very different from the maids. The flower girls like oiled poured on their head and let it stay so it gets soaked. The maids like oil poured and massaged into their hair. With the flower girls after their head is soaked I comb their hair for some time. After combing I part their hair and oil the remaining hair all the way to the end. I take strands of hair and rub oil heavily. After heavy oiling of both parts they stand and I comb their hair all the way down. After a lot of combing and they want it tight so one of them will help me combing. After a big tight oily bun is done, the same procedure is followed with the other flower girl. I hope this helps. Speaking of clients, only women come to their store. There are some clients who like to get their hair decorated by the flower girls, so while oiling their hair, the clients would be next to us. Two of the clients saw me oiling one of the flower girls hair while the other was decorating their hair. They both encouraged me for oiling the hair and said I should continue doing it. They even told the flower girls to oil my hair very heavily later as I deserve it. While I was getting my hair oiled by one of the flower girls, one more client walked in, as she sat next to me, she also told the flower girl to oil my hair heavily as oiling is good for the hair.
    Please do advise Namratha.
On the weekends the maids and me had our daily oiling till dripping session. I get to oil the maids hair more often now. They like combing their hair so every few hours I get to comb their hair. They even oil my hair now while being combed. On Sunday the flower girls joined us late evening, so we got more oiling done than usual. After oiling all of them hair their hair decorated with flowers. The flower girls and maids insisted I help to decorate flowers.

  24. Dear Namratha, thanks for your reply.
Yes I do feel I am very lucky as I have such a good and caring neighbours and maids to take care. This is because of them I came in to the world of heavy oiling and am able to control lice problem. Earlier I used to oil my hairs heavily only twice a week, but now I oil my hairs twice daily or even thrice daily. Thanks for ur idea of gift they were very happy because of it.
I know twin braids with ribbons is traditional hairstyle for school girls as I have seen school girls wearing them. It was because of aunt who remembered her school days and insisted we should wear them. We all were looking very funny. Even I felt embarased when my other neighbouring lady who keeps very short hairs saw me and laughed.
Last week on Sunday aunt decided that we should use some different oil for a change and we used Mahabringraj oil. As usual the maids oiled my hairs very heavily followed by nitpicking and lice combing. And finally everybody's hairs were decorated with veni round their oiled bun.
Today when I was oiling my hair in the morning aunt turned up since she wanted to ask me about the city bus route and when she saw me oiling she immediately asked me to sit and very heavily oiled my hairs. After licecombing for some time she tied a different hairstyle of my hair, she told its called Sagar Choti. She poured more oil after tieing the plait. Then I noticed that she was also in similar hair style.

    Regards

  25. Hello Namratha, Hope you are doing fine. You must be very busy as no post this week. I was busy too as I was away for three days. I got back on Friday. Monday was the only day I got my hair oiled heavily. On Friday the maids had already oiled their hair till dripping by the time I arrived and their long hair was open and not tied on bun or tight plait.. I didn't have to wait too long for oiling as the maids told me to meet them in the courtyard. One of the maid started combing my hair while the other warmed the coconut oil and bought it in a large bowl. Warm coconut oil was poured on my head and then massaged into the scalp. It felt so good to have my hair oiled after three days. I hope u agree Namratha. After an hour or so my hair was oiled till dripping and they must have used more oil than usual as more oil was dripping than before. During oiling they told me to go visit the flower girls on Saturday and do my oiling there as the flower girls requested.
. On Saturday morning the maids told me to wash my hair as they wanted to apply sour curd to my hair. They oiled my hair later before I left for the flower girls store. Once I arrived at the store, one of them told me to go inside where there were two clients getting their hair decorated. I sat down and one of the flower girls opened my hair and started oiling. The c!ients inquired about my oiling and the flower girl said since I had not had any oiling done for three days, hair will be oiled till dripping. The clients agreed and encouraged the flower girls to oil more. The flower girls said after oiling we will all go to my house and do more oiling with the maids.
When we all sat in the courtyard for oiling I told them about my trip and how I went to look for a place as in mid May I will be starting a two month course in a nearby town. My mother had found a place and I had to go and see it. The maids and flower girls inquired who would be oiling my hair. I told them I will come down every second weekend and they could oil my hair then. They were like I need to oil my hair heavily every day and routine is not to be broken. The maids told me they will talk to my mother. Soon all of us were oiled till dripping. The flower girls before leaving said not to break routine.
Please advise Namratha on this issue.

Mani, hello I have a question for you. What is sagar choti? I would !like to recommend it to the maids and flower girls. Thanks

Nice to see many people still oiling their hair and carrying forward our old gloden tradition :-). I do oil my hairs very heavily. As this is a summer season in our place. i want to know the best hairstyle that i can wear with oiled hairs. And also, give me some tips grow my hairs thicker.....

  28. Hello Raj, sorry for replying now only. But as I had said before, the kids are having school holidays and so I am spending my time with them. You are completely right to say that hair oiling is such a soothing experience and feeling. That's why I will never get bored of oiling. I guess the maids oil more than usual since you had oiled for several days. Did the clients have heavily oiled hair? When they commented, you should have asked them about their hair oiling routine as well. Maybe they also oil very heavily like us and that's why they encouraged the maids to oil you more. I believe that once you adopt the routine of oiling daily, it should be continued. But again, you have to take into consideration several factors. Like your joining a course and so on. The best would be to talk to them and consider different solutions and they choose the one that suits all of you. You can also oil your hair by yourself whenever you are off-course in your room/hostel. Do keep us informed about this dear. Thanks for sharing again.

  29. Hi Mani, hope you are fine. I am happy that your neighbours and maid liked the gift. Yes, twin braids are mostly for school children as you said. As for that lady who laughed, I believe she did that because of the hair style. If she oils because you oiled your hair, then you have to show her how long and healthy your hair is. Many women say they like short hair because it has so many advantages. But the real and only truth is that since they do not take good care of their hair, their hair looks really bad. And there's nothing worse that long but badly maintained hair. As for the Sagar Choti, I've tried to search on google and it showed a few images and videos. I think it more or less like a french braid right? So many of us are curious about this style, can you please explain or show us?
    Thank you,
    Namratha

  30. Hi Pooja, thank you for posting and welcome to the blog. I am happy that you find the blog interesting. I hope you become one of the blog contributors as well and make it still more interesting. Yes, even I am happy to see that some people still maintain the hair oiling habit and fewer still maintain the heavy hair oiling routine of us Indian people. Can you please give us details about your actual hair routine? In a week how often you oil? How often you wash? What oil do you use? How much do you oil? As for the styles, for summer it's the bun. On top of protecting the hair, it will not be covering your neck and encourage sweating. I would happily try to suggest a routine to help you grow your hair thicker and longer, but I will first need to know actually how you are doing things. So feel free to share with us and I am sure any of our experts contributors will be providing more tips along my suggestions.
    Thank you,

  31. Hello Namratha, Thank you for your advice. I hope you are having a good time with your family. So on the weekend and Monday, oiling was done till dripping. I didn't wash my hair till Tuesday. On Tuesday, afternoon while oiling the maids were concerned about my oiling routine. They asked my mother if one of them can stay with me so oiling routine does not stop. My mother said she needs both here as she travels, but she also suggested that one of the maids can go with me and find a suitable maid who loves oiling and can ensure a regular oiling routine for me. The maids were happy with the decision. What do you think Namratha ?. On Wednesday I went to the shop for oiling till dripping. While oiling I asked the flower girls about the clients and they said the client do oiling till dripping on weekends and they are a group of four. On weekdays they oil their hair everyday but not heavy and get their hair decorated with flowers. I told the flower girls about my mother's decision and they inquired if one of them could go with the maid. I need your advise. After oiling was done till dripping I went home and later some more oiling was done with the maids.

  32. Hi Pooja, apologies for my late reply. But as I mentioned before, my daughters had school holidays and was quite busy with them. It's nice to note that you already have a good routine of oiling 3 times in a week. I wanted to know what is heavy oiling for you? Is it oiling till the hair is fully oiled? Or does heavy oiling means till dripping like we do? Also, you wash your hair on Friday? Why don't you keep the oil till Monday instead of washing on Friday? Fridays and weekends are the best time for super heavy oiling dear. If you follow this good routine of oiling, I am sure your hair will improve with time and will get thicker and longer. As for the style, it will depend on you dear. Usually a tight bun is better after oiling. I would be grateful if you can also share your detailed routine about how you oil and how much. Thanks for posting and hoping to hear from you soon.

  33. Hi Raj, thanks for your post and sorry for replying now only. Was busy with the kids but today they resumed school and I am back. I think your mom suggested a good idea of the maids finding another maid who will take care of your hair when you are away. It would be good also that one of the flower girls accompanies the maid and yourself. I think if you can prove that you can take care of your hair, you will not need anyone. But on the other hand, having someone to take care of your hair will also have many advantages and you do not have to worry about when, how and where to oil. That person will take care of that. As I mentioned, the most important is that you are happy and the others are also happy with the decision. Best would be to brainstorm together with your mom, mais and flower girls and take a decision. I hope you all settle down to a decision soon and let us know.
    Take care

  34. Hi Pooja, I am happy that you will follow my advice of not washing your hair on Friday. Super heavy oiling is oiling till dripping dear. It means that you will keep on applying oil until it will start to drip and in this way, you make sure to coat the whole scalp and hair. This what I mean by heavy oiling for me. My usual daily oiling will be till the hair is completely saturated, but no dripping. I believe since you are already applying a good amount of oil on your hair, you can apply some more oil to make it fully wet and dripping. Then you can tell us the difference between these and the results of heavy oiling compared against oiling till dripping. As for the quantity, it depends on several factors: length of your hair, thickness, dryness of the hair, texture, dryness of the scalp/skin and the heat from the scalp. I usually let my hair loose right after oiling because I oil a lot and very often till dripping. So if I will comb right after oiling, all the excess oil will be removed. So what I do is to wait for some 30 minutes after oiling and then combing the hair. My most common style will be in bun (being a housewife and mother, there is lots to do at home and thus secure the hair in a bun). Otherwise, I also braid my hair. You can use a very mild shampoo for washing after oiling, but most important is you should apply only once and not more. I hope these are useful. Do try what I suggested and let us know how it went, Keep posting and happy oiling dear.

  35. Hello Namratha, nice to hear from you. During the weekend we followed our usual routine of oiling till dripping. I helped in combing and oiling their hair too. On Sunday the flower girls joined us and we had a long oiling session. While oiling my mother came and joined us. She said that she arranged with the landlady to have a couple of maids meet us, next weekend. She told the maids that to keep someone who likes to oil her hair as much we do, as I should be focused in studies and the maid can take care of my oiling routine with hers. One of the flower girls suggested if she could go with us and my mother was happy and encouraged it. After our oiling everybody combed and made nice long plaits and flower decoration was done. I washed my hair as usual on Monday, after which again heavy oiling was done. The maid and flower girl are really looking forward to the trip and her happy that my oiling routine would not stop.
I asked them them during oiling about sagar choti and the flower girls know how to do it. They said they will show it to me next time at the shop. We did discuss though that my oiling routine would change as due to classes. My mom told me to listen to the maid and flower girl and let them come up with a different routine. Any suggestions Namratha.
    P!ease rep!y soon.

  36. Hello Raj, apologies for not replying earlier but we had a function in the family and was quite held up with everything. I am back again now. Your mom is right in saying that your focus should be on studies and someone else takes care of the oiling routine. It would be really nice if one of the flower girls accompanies you. They are already used to the routine and can keep that up with you. I think that's the best idea so far Raj. Can you give us details about that hair style if the flower girls explained that to you? Have a nice day.

  37. Hi Pooja, thank you for your reply and apologies for not coming back to you earlier. I am happy that you started oiling till dripping and I am sure that your hair condition will improve a lot with time. The reason why I keep my hair open after oiling till dripping is that if you comb it after oiling this much, all the excess oil will be removed and will go waste. Hence, I let my hair open and wait till the dripping reduces. You can keep a towel on your shoulder if you wish but if open hair is really inconvenient for you, you can as well finger comb your hair and make a loose hairstyle (like loose braid or loose bun). Do keep us updated about how it is going for you.
    Take care,

    2. Hi Pooja, thank you for your reply. I am very happy that you see positive results from this routine. Do share the success with us. Can you also share the details of your oiling so that we can try to establish the best practice for heavy oiling please? As I was telling another friend who chatted with me few days back, it will depend on the function and how much oiled my hair is. For example, if it will be a prayer or something quite formal, I will prefer a bun. But if it is for visiting a relatives place, I will keep a braid. The style will also depend on how much 'heavy' I have oiled my hair. If it is really heavy (but not till dripping), I will wear a bun because the braid will stain my clothes. But if it is only heavily oiled (that is all the hair is wet with oil), then I can do a braid itself. I hope I have answered your questions dear.
Hope to read you soon again
      Happy oiling,

  38. Hello Namratha, I hope all is well. Its being a while since I my last post, I hope you had good oiling sessions. The flower girl came with the maid and me to my new place. They spent an entire afternoon talking to different maids and finally selected one. She had her hair heavily oiled and ties in a tight bun. The flower girl even made the new maid oil my hair hair very heavily as she had bought a bottle with her. They even made a new routine for oiling. On weekdays oiling would be done heavily and on Friday evening to Monday morning oiling would be done till dripping. What do you think Namratha ?
On the weekends the new maid sister would also join us for oiling till dripping. On the weekends oil would be applied to my face and hands too, as the maid advised it is good for the skin and since she does it, I have to do it too. They both have very long hair and are very disciplined about oiling. During the weekend they asked if I would like to try new hairstyles after oiling and if I had ever used henna in my hair. Please advise Namratha.
The flower girls had shown me sagar choti at their shop when I went for oiling last. They make three partitions of hair from the center of the head and then tie it. It looks very similar to a French braid, and then more oiling is done to the braid.
    Please reply soon Namratha.

  40. Hi Namratha
Sorry could not reply for long.. Since its summer went out for a vacation at my native.. Just returned yesterday evening. was planning to return tomorrow but today being Sunday I did not want to miss our group oiling session. and also I didn't had licecombing done for long although I oiled my hairs daily. So my head was itching badly. As soon as I came yesterday evening I went to my balcony and oiled my hairs very heavily. did self licecombing for an hour, got lots of louse almost 3 to 4 in every stroke. went to aunt today morning and she was happy to see me. She told me that we would have our oiling session in an hour as she wanted to attend a wedding function in afternoon. She also told me to go to the market and buy 2 dozen jasmine gajras. I said ok. I knew these were for our hair decoration and 6 of this 2 dozen will be pinned in my hairs which will be to many. But I did not argue with her and went to the market to buy jasmine gajras. Saw one lady selling it and bought them. After an hour aunt came to my house and told we would have our session in my balcony since we were only 2 of them as maids have gone to native... I said ok.
She first oiled her hair very heavily combed it and tied a single long plait from it. Then she asked me to sit. I sat facing my back to her. She opened my hair and was very angry when she saw lots of nits and lice. She did nitpicking for and hour. Then applied more oil on my heavily oiled hair and started licecombing. She found lots of them and handed over to me for killing. Then she did a very painful reverse licecombing and finally tied a single long plait of my hair. Then she asked if I bought gajras from market. I gave her the packet. She took 12 of them and pinned it in her plait. What I saw was a huge bunch of flowers hanging in her plait. She then looked at me. I knew what she ment and sat facing my back to her. I told her if she could only tie 6 on me as I do not want this much huge bunch hanging in my plait. She did not answer and pinned all 12 in my plait and told not to remove it. Then she went home. I was a bit upset but when I went in front of mirror and saw I really felt that the bunch of flowers were looking beautiful in my heavily oiled and neatly tied hair. When I went to the balcony saw that aunt had forgotten her purse and so I went outside and returned it. I saw my other neighbouring lady with pixie cut was looking at me and laughing. I immediately understood that she was looking at the flowers and laughing. What I did was i went near her and stood beside her so that she could have closer look at what was making her laugh. She kept looking at my hairs and gajras for some time and went away..
    @ Raj.
I asked aunty about sagar choti. She told me that Sagar Choti is the Indian version of French braid. Its called sagar Choti because Dimpal Kapadia wore it in film sagar.

  41. Hello Raj, I am back after quite some time. Glad to learn that the flower girl came with the maid to your new place. They finally got someone who shares the same interest as them in oiling. The routine is good dear, just like we do. But maybe you can keep Wed for oiling till dripping too. You seem to have got a nice group again with the maid's sister joining you. Henna is also very good for hair dear. I use it every alternate weeks as well. If you apply henna on heavily oiled hair, it will not stain the hair but will help with its conditioning effects. Thanks for explaining te Sagar Choti style as well to us. Keep posting dear.

  42. Dear Anonymous guest, thank you for posting and apologies for my late reply. I would request you to leave your name so that I can reply easily to you. If I get your point, your maid applies mehendi on her own hair. But still you hate the smell. Well henna is natural and it's normal for the leaves to have that smell. I do agree that at first the smell might be disturbing, but you eventually get used to it. There are different ways of preparing henna and what I do is mix it with coconut oil. So you can suggest your maid to mix it with any perfumed oil to eliminate that smell. It would be nice if you can share your maid's hair care routine with us too.
    Take care,

  43. Hi Mani,
Thank you for the post dear.I hope you had a nice time at your native. I am happy to see that you are very disciplined about your hair routine. It is good that you did not argue with aunt but if there is something that you don't like, it is also good to talk and find a compromise. I believe your aunt did a really good job with the lice combing. However, you seem to like having the flowers in your hair. If you are happy with it, then no problem. As I tell so often, people who will laugh at us are just jealous. They live their life as per what society finds good and not as per their will. They do not have the courage of doing things like we do but still they will criticize and laugh. You just have to ignore them because I am sure your hair is much better than hers. You did the right thing in showing that her laughs mean nothing to you and you just don't care about her. As you see, she finally went away and I am sure she must be saying to herself that her hair is so bad and that's why she had to cut it short. Thank you for explaining the Sagar Choti and explaining the origin of this hairstyle.
    Take care,
    Namratha

  44. Hello Namratha, It is nice to read your reply after long time. For a moment I thought that the blog is discontinued. I hope you are having good oiling sessions. Yes you are correct that the maid and flower girl found somebody like them. We both follow the same routine every week. The maid and flower girl also told her that I oil and comb their hair and she can ask me to do the same. She makes me to oil and comb her hair every day. If I have a free moment, she will untie her heavily oiled hair and ask me to comb it. On Wednesday while combing her hair, the landlady who lives near us dropped by. She was surprised to see me combing the maids hair. We explained to her about our oiling routine. She was very impressed and encouraged us about the oiling routine. She even suggested to come to her house on Sunday and have an oiling session with her and her maid. She wanted me to oil and comb her hair.
My maid suggested we should go with a big bottle of coconut oil and some flowers for hair decorations. So on Sunday we went to her house and was met with her and maid. Both of them have long hair and was slightly oiled. She was happy with the gifts. Her maid bought two bowls of warm oil and mixed castor oil to it. The landlady asked me to sit in front of her for oiling. Her maid was started oiling the landlady hair, while my maid sat in front of me for oiling. All of us took turns in oiling and combing each other. My maid explained to her that on weekends we oil till dripping and both of them agreed to do the same. After oiling the ladies put flower in their hair. The landlady suggested next time she will put flowers in my hair too. She said that every Sunday we all should have joint oiling session. What do you think Namratha.?
After oiling we reached home and the maids sister snowed up and the maid made me oil and comb her sister hair. After oiling I put some flowers in her hair. After some time the maid untied my hair and combed it for a long with her sister.
The maid suggested that next time we should all have the same hairstyle like sagar choti. Any advice Namratha.

    Please do rep!y soon.

  46. Dear Namratha
Thanks for your post. Yes aunt is very helpful to me as she is the one who taught me about heavy hair oiling. She really help me a lot for coping up with lice. This is one reason I do not like to argue with her even if I don't like anything she do. Today being Saturday we had our oiling session. Maids are still in native. So aunt oiled her hair and then oiled my hair heavily and did lice combing. She as usual bought 12 gajras for both of us and first tied 12 in hair and then tied the other 12 in my hair. I asked her in low voice that why she is making me wear gajras. She told me that she loves flowers in long hairs and wants everyone in the group to follow that and since I have long hairs I should not mind wearing them. I smiled and she went away.actually I don't like flowers in hair but feel like a bunch of gajras really look beautiful in neatly tied heavily oiled hairs.
Last Sunday me and aunt both wore Sagar Choti.
Tomorrow aunt has asked me to buy 2 veni for us. So we will have oiled bun with a veni round it.

  47. Hi Raj,
Yes, these days I am quite busy. But rest assured that I will not let the blog down. Oiling sessions are going on as usual dear. Here its winter and I just like that because the coconut oil remains in the solid state. As long as you are happy with oiling, combing and styling their hair, then no problem. You found a new member to your group as well in the landlady, that's nice. Your maid is right about bringing the oil bottle and flower decorations. I think it's quite good dear, the larger the group, but better it is. As for the flower decorations in your hair, that's up to you. If you are at ease with that, then fine. Otherwise, as I always say, better to voice out and find a compromise. It is always fun to try new hairstyles as well. I find any hairstyle much better when the hair is heavily oiled. Happy oiling to you all.

  48. Dear Anonymous, I understand that some people hate mehendi for its smell and how it looks on the hair. But again it all depends on how much you are ready to do for the benefit of your hair. For example, I apply natural coconut oil which is without any fragrance. Some people may hate that smell but being natural, it is much better for the hair. I think you maid is right by using henna and I am quite sure she must be oiling her hair a lot too. Because even though henna conditions the hair and makes it thicker, its only drawback is that it makes the hair dry. Hence after henna, a heavy oiling is required. I will just share my opinion again, but if ever your wife wishes to apply henna for her hair, then you should not prevent her from doing that. You can ask her to do it when you are not at home. Hair is something very important for ladies and even for guys. Wish you all the best!

  49. Dear Sayan,
First of all welcome to the blog and I am very happy that you shared your experience with us. You emailed me and informed me that you post did not appear, but actually you had posted it on our first page. I have created this actual page (2nd page) as the first one was full completely and not all posts were visible when viewing. I will post your comments on this page itself and I would advise you to post on this actual page.

My first question would be to know why your sister hates hair oiling? Many people hate hair oiling because they don't actually know the benefits of oiling (you can refer to one of my posts about the numerous benefits). What actually happens is that mothers tend to forcefully oil their daughters hair without explaining the benefits. Even I faced this situation with my elder daughter and very often we both got angry at each other. But I took time to explain about the benefits of oiling and about how her hair is much better than her friends who do not oil. With time, she saw the difference herself and realized the benefits and now she is more than ready to be oiling. The routine that your mom has decided is very good: oiling every alternate days and washing once a week. However, I recommend washing at least twice a week as otherwise, the oiled hair will attract dust and this will block the pores of the scalp and hair. Even though I oil everyday, I make sure that my hair is clean too.

Another point is going out with oiled hair. I do not see anything wrong as long as the hair is neatly combed and styled. I know that's not fashionable but oiled hair looks much better than dry brittle hair in any styles. I believe that once your sister starts liking oiling, she will be happy to be out with oiled hair as well. What I did not understand from your post is that you said 'every friday'? Does your mom oil your sister hair more heavily on Friday? Is Friday different from the other oiling days? Being a mom, I myself like to oil my daughters hair and my daughters allowing me to oil their hair shows they respect me and agree to discipline. I guess that's why your mom also feels happy for this. I believe your mom oils your sis hair very heavily then. When you say it looks that her hair was dipped in oil, do you mean that your mom oils your sister's hair till fully dripping like we do? Or is it just very wet with oil? I guess it must be dripping as you also said that your mom cleans the excess oil? Can you give us more details about the oiling process?

Is your sister ok to go out with oil dripping hair? I believe that's not really practical as well. I will never send my daughters to school with oil dripping hair. As for me, it happens that I go out with oil dripping hair but I will go to nearby shop or market only. If I were working, I don't think I would have gone to work with oil dripping hair. For sure I would have kept my hair heavily oiled at work, but not dripping. Can you also clear this point please? I guess your last paragraph was also about your sister? So finally she started liking oiling and doesn't mind going out with heavily oiled hair?

Another question I have is whether your mom also follows the same routine. I find it wrong to impose hair oiling on kids if you, as an adult, does not follow the same. This will surely create trouble as they might ask why it's only them that should go out with heavily oiled.

    Hoping to read you soon,
    Namratha

  50. Dear bloggers, below is the post from Sayan:

Dear Namratha I would like to share something..I'm a 23 year old male and have a 25 year old sister.Shes otherwise very homely, but hates oiling her hair. She knows about my fetish though and on top of that our mom is very strict regarding her hair oiling regime. So my sis has little choice but to submit to moms oiling sessions.
Mom gives her a champi about thrice a week, every alternate day,and shes only allowed to wash her hair on Sundays, and not even when we have to go to public occasions.
So every Friday, mom wakes her up very early in the morning, makes her take a shower and finish her chores and then sits her down for oiling. She usually uses parachute..at first she pours a lot of oil on her scalp ans then spreads it out evenly over the other parts of her hair.she massages sis's head with the cool oil and I think she quite enjoys making her daughter a champu. She keeps repeating this process until all the hair on her scalp is wet and slick. Then she takes a good amount in her hand and applies to every other part of sis's hair like the back and sides. The whole thing continues for about half an hour until half a bottle is emptied, and sis's head looks lie its been dipped in oil.Mom then cleans off the excess oil and ties a tight neat plait.
Sis isnt allowed to wash off any of the oil.She does a dayjob at a local school an mom makes her go there all oiled up.Even on public occasions mom makes sis go oiled and slick and champu.Initially sis felt very uncomfortable with what people said, but recently I think even she enjoys the attention she gets for her beautiful thick hair and her adherence to old indian culture..although she would never admit it.
Hope you liked my experience. :)

  51. Hi Mani, yes I understand that. I appreciate your way of thinking and I am sure even your aunt appreciates that. I feel you are starting to like the flowers in your hair too. As I said, as long as you are happy and at ease with it, then it's fine. I believe it's much more a tradition in India to be wearing flowers in the hair. I personally don't like it that much. I never wear flowers when going out but I saw a few Indian ladies with one flower tucked in the hair during weddings for example. But most important is the oiling of course.
    Happy oiling,
    Namratha

  52. Well i always prevented my mom from applying henna since my childhood. Btw even my maid knows that i hate it so when she applies it, she delibrately threatens me by bringing her head near me but i dont mind this and take it on a lighter side. Actually i just dont like the orange color of it on white hair or else i dont think i would have hated it this much

  53. Dear Namratha, first of all thank you for directing me to this page.I'd been checking the previous page for replies until you directed me here.I'll answer your questions one by one.

    1. Sis actually does not hate oiling. In fact, she confided in me once that she quite enjoys it as it relaxes her and also keeps her hair healthy. The problem is peer pressure. Some of her friends are rather posh and scr her as ' old fashioned' and 'champu' because she goes out with them with oiled hair. Naturally she's become quite shy because of this. The other problem is mom doesn't communicate properly with her. When sis was younger mom had no problems with oiling her hair, and as you said as a mother she enjoyed it very much. But sis's attitude recently has hurt her and instead of talking with her ad explaining the benefits of oiling, mom has imposed her routine on sis.
Regarding the benefits of oiling I believe showing sis the blog will do her a whole lot of good.
But what I really need is some advice as to how I can set up a dialog bet ween the two so that everything's cleared up. Also advice regarding as to how sis can overcome her social awkwardness and confidently go out with oiled hair would help her a lot.
Now,mom follows the routine that my grandma followed when she oiled her hair, and hasn't given any thought to the fact that as sis goes out her hair might get dusty.I believe washing twice a week is quite reasonable and will tell her so.

2.Fridays are actually quite special.Sis has no work on the weekends so mom takes her time to oil sis's hair and also uses quite a bit more oil. That's exactly what I meant by 'dipped in oil',it meant she oils till dripping. The other days mom ols sis heavily but not till dripping(though I wish she would) .Ofcourse,as I said earlier, mom thoroughly enjoys oiling her daughter's hair, that's why she does it.I also believe, that sis loves getting oiled by mom,as heavily as she does it,but neither is willing to talk to the other regarding this, and that's what I want to rectify.I'm sure once they start talking frankly, the oiling process will become much more enjoyable and even more frequent.
To answer your other query, whenever sis goes out,her hair is combed neatly and tied in a sleek neat single braid.i think its quite beautiful, specially considering the state her friends' hair is in(dry and rather unattractive)

3.As I said earlier, sis told me she would enjoy going out with very heavily oiled hair if not for the peer pressure and the ahzing. Ofcourse, going out with oil dripping hair is impractical, but thats what Fridays are for :) I mentioned she's started enjoying oiling as she confided all this in me quite recently. Till then I had no idea she's loved moms oiling since school. Its only the confidence that's lacking.

4.Mom follows an even stricter regime than sis.As she's a homemaker, she oils every alternate day till dripping and sometimes on consecutive days as well.My garndmother instilled this habit in her which has continued. So no issues there.

I'm sure if you guys could offer some help as to how I can open a dialog between mom and sis,and advise her as to how to ignore social pressure I'm sure she could overcome her shyness and get oiled happily, maybe pretty soon also become a regular member of the blog ! :)
    Hoping for replies soon,Sayan

  55. Hello Anonymous, thanks for your replying. So you prefer your mom to have grey hairs or rather use chemical products for hair dye? I mean this is up to her to use something that she likes. Your maid is funny by bringing her head near you. Does she apply henna very often? How often in a week? I do agree with you on the orange color of henna. But do you also know that you can prepare henna in a lot of ways? The shade will then depend on the ingredients you use. For example, adding coffee to the paste makes the shade darker and so the hair will turn auburn instead of bright orange. I guess you can ask your maid who will know about that. Do keep us posted.
    Thanks,

  56. Hello Sayan,

I am more than happy to learn that your sis does not actually hate oiling. Peer pressure is really a big problem. But what's sad is that people tend to live the way society dictates. In the end, you lead a stressful life and sometimes you are just not happy. Posh people believe that these traditional things are useless. I agree that this can impact on her. But this situation is similar to what my elder daughter faced. When she realized how better her hair was as compared to the others, then she overcame that. What is the main reason for short hair? It's because the hair is not healthy enough to grow it long. Long but dry/brittle hair looks so bad. So it's better to cut it and try some trendy styles. Whereas your sister does not need to do these things to look good. I am sure her hair is much better than all the others. There is also the question of quality friends rather than quantity. What is the use of being with friends who will simply look down on you? If they believe they are superior than others, it's their choice. But it's your choice to be with them or no.

The second problem is communication between mother and kids. Again, I agree that we lead a very hectic and stressful life. In the times of our parents, a kid would be spending max time with the family. But today, kids spend max time alone or with friends and thus take up bad habits. It is also true that parents are very busy with work/earning. It is really hard but a mother need to find time to spend with her kids for sure. In my situation, my husband spends most of his time at work, sometimes working till late hours. But on my side, I try to catch up on his part and spend max of time with the kids. And I impose on him to spend his Sunday at least with the family. But simple things like having lunch/dinner together is a great way to catch up.

Coming back to the communication mismatch, the best thing would be to advise your sister to take the first step. A mom oiling her daughter's hair shows love and affection and it is such a strong bond. My advice would be that tonight, your sister goes to your mom and talks to her. The best way to break the ice is that your sister goes to your mom and asks mom to oil her hair. I am sure that your mother will be surprised but happy. Then you sister can talk to your mom telling her that she doesn't mind getting her hair oiled heavily and daily but just allow her to wash it more often. Your sister can then explain things she doesn't like to your mom and then both of them can find a compromise. And here you can play the mediator and make sure that this discussion does not end up in a mess. Your sister can also propose to oil your mom's hair dear. You can't imagine the joy a mom feels when she sees her daughter caring for her, just the way the mom did all this time.

Fridays are good for heavy oiling. Even in my case, I will oil my daughters' hair till dripping as from Friday evening or night. I am happy to see that we follow the same routine more or less. Fridays are oiling till dripping (and this goes up to Sunday afternoon/evening). As you said, I am also sure that your sister enjoys the oiling sessions just like I enjoy every bit of MIL's oiling my hair.

From your third point, am I right to say that your sis goes out with oil dripping hair?

Just like me, your mom being a housewife, we can afford to be with oil dripping hair everyday. And usually, parents and people from older generations will be using more oil and even more frequently.

I hope my advice will be useful. I would request you to please talk to your sister and as you said, she can go through the blog and see the different posts. She is most welcome to contribute as well. Do keep us updated and we all hope that you have a nice oily weekend, with everyone happy!
    Take care,

  57. I prefer my mom to use chemical dyes which she does without any hesitation cause i am sure she wont like the orange colour and she doesnt even knows how to get different shades. Few years back my maid used to apply mehndi twice in a month but now she applies like once in two months i dont know why the frequency has reduced. By the way what do you do with your leftover mehndi paste after you are done with applying it on hair ?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hello Anonymous (I think it's high time you give me your name dear), thanks for your reply. Yes, sometimes people choose chemical products because it is easier and quicker but that's their choice. I believe your maid has reduced her henna application as this makes her hair dry. But maybe you should advise her that after henna, a heavy oiling is required. In my case, I will apply all the henna paste I prepare. I usually prepare a big bowl of thick henna paste. I don't make it light and runny. If ever, there is still some paste remaining after application, I will apply that as well after a few hours of the first application. Just like I do with oil, I will top-up the henna already on my head. You cannot actually keep henna paste over several days.

  59. On your special request i am giving my name here. Coming back to the topic, actually i asked you about leftover mehndi because what my maid does is that after applying it on her hair if there is some leftover mehndi she applies it on her soles of feet. This reminded me of a funny incident. I was at that time 7-8 years old. One day my maid was sitting with mehndi on her hair and i got a mysterious idea. I took a matchstick and tried to insert it in her mehndi coated head. The mehndi was solid at that time. She then tried to threaten me by bringing her head near me but i didnt reacted as if i didnt got irritated by this strategy. As the maid knew that i hate mehndi she thought of applying some more mehndi. She went straight to kitchen and brought some leftover mehndi and started applying it on her soles to keep me away.

  60. Hi Rahul, thanks for this. I prefer calling you by your name rather than calling you Anonymous. I understand your question now, but I will not be applying mehendi to the skin even if there is some leftover. Here, we will apply the mehendi on the hands for a wedding only. It won't be something that we will do for other occasions. Yes, when you apply the paste to your hair, it dries up and the hair becomes solid as you said. And when the mehendi is solid, it can be a real mess because whenever you will touch the dry paste, it will fall off as dust. You seem very close to your maid and that's nice dear.
    Thanks,
    Namratha

  61. well about the dry hair, its strange to see that my maid doesnt oil her hair much, yet her hair dont get dry and brittle after mehndi application. She leaves mehndi in her hair for about 6-8 hours, sometimes 8-10 hours if some occasion is around. But i have never seen her hair becoming dry after mehndi, instead they look good. Once i went to vacation with family and we took her as well. After coming back, she told me that she will apply mehndi 3-4 times as gray hairs have grown so i should prepare to cooperate. And yeah i am really close to her coz she has been working for us since last 16-18 years

  62. Dear Namratha
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes as you said most important is oiling. So I never miss that. Its been long I don't even remember when I had kept my hair dry without oiling for more than 15 mins. And now after getting lice infection oiling has increased. On weekdays oiling hairs heavily twice daily and lice combing has become a routine. And on weekends heavy oiling thrice along with group oiling and licecombing and hair decoration has become a routine.
Its not that I have started likeing flowers in hair, its just because of aunt I wear them, but I now I don't hate that either. Yes its a tradition in India for females to wear flowers( jasmine gajras) in hair, but most of them wear only 1 or 2 gajras and very rarely 6 during festival or weddings. But aunt is so found of flowers especially gajras that she won't let us wear less than 6 and sometimes even 12. Last Sunday after oiling and licecombing she tied my hairs in bun. And then after tieing a veni in her own bun she asked me to sit facing my back to her and tied a veni in my bun. At that time I asked her why she is so found of flowers and hair decoration. She told she got this habit from her mother and when she was of my age she used to wear gajras everyday. She believes that beautiful long hairs should be well groomed and decorated on daily basis and I should also follow this since I have long and beautiful hairs. I just smiled and then she took me in front of the mirror to show how beautiful veni looks in oiled bun.
The maids have returned yesterday and this Saturday we will again be 4 of us for group oiling.
    Regards
    Mani

  63. And from how many years are you using mehndi on your hair ? By the way doesnt your head feel heavy if you keep slathering mehndi on it even after your hair are fully coated with mehndi ?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi Rahul, I think this will also depend on the type of hair you have and on the quality of the mehendi used. I believe in India you can easily get pure and natural henna and hence it does not cause the drying effect. But most people who use henna say that it makes the hair quite dry. She also keeps the henna for a very long time. After 10 hours I believe the henna will be completely dry on the hair. Do you mean to say that she applies henna 3-4 times in a day or in a week? It's common in India that a family maid simply becomes a family member after working for so many years.

I have been using henna for 3-4 years now but I always applied it on heavily oiled hair and I even mix it with oil mostly and less water. So it does not stain the hair but rather gives a shade. Yes, topping up the henna will make the head quite heavy, specially if you have long hair. But I am quite used to all that as I keep my hair heavily oiled mostly. So that's not a problem for me dear.

  65. Hi Mani, yes oiling is the most important and even I don't remember the last time I kept my hair dry for more than 2 hours. Because after washing, I will dry it in the sun and leave it open to dry naturally. Sunshine is also another important component, specially early morning sunshine. As for the flowers, I see that many people do like it in India so it's quite a norm there. Wishing you all a nice group oiling then dear.
    Take care

  66. Hi namratha didi, my maid at that time said she will apply mehndi consecutively 3-4 times in a week. And i think she leaves it for so long coz she applies it for colouring purpose. But well i have noticed that the colour she achieves after leaving it for 8 hours is worth leaving for so long. It is not orange and a really good dark red wine shade which i like. I have noticed the mehndi paste on hair starts turning into yellow solid as a result of leaving it for so long.

Do you apply it youself or someone helps you with application process as you have long hair? My maid applies it herself on her long hair

  67. Hello Namratha, I hope all is good in winter for you. I was away on a trip for so was not able to write. I got back on Tuesday, there was no oiling done for the time I was away. When I got back the maid was not too happy with me having no oiled hair for a long time. She already had her hair oiling till dripping, and she made sure I had hair oiling till dripping too. I told her that I have the week off and she was happy and said the whole week she is going to make sure we do oiling till dripping everyday. What do you think Namratha ?. On Tuesday morning she made me go to the market to buy flowers for her hair decoration as she wanted me to oil and style her hair. As I was walking home after buying flowers, I bumped into the landlady's maid. She was happy to see me and more happy to see my oiled hair. She said she wants to come over and have oiling session with us. Please advise Namratha.

    Thanks

  68. Hi Namratha, sorry for the prolonged hiatus as I had to take a break from the net due to impending xmas..but I'm back now and I'd like to give you some good news..my mom and sis irked it all out..it took quite a lot more time than expected but ultimately it all worked out..and the outcome is that now sis gets her champ every alternate day and has asked mom to do it herself and suffice it to say mom relishes the time with her...
First off I'll describe their schedule..every alternate day starting on monday mom oils sis's hair very heavily nowadays..not flowing but almost there and sis loves it.Alone time with mom seems to have given her a lot more confidence and I don't see her bothered as much by the tints of her peers anymore. That has resulted in an increase in the amount of oil mom uses on sis's hair. And fridays as aways are special, with double oiling sessions, once before sis leaves for work as usual and once after she returns home. This double oiling routine for morning and evening continues throughout the weekend and needless to say mom oils sis’s hair till dripping on these 3 days. But the most astonishing thing is sis also oil’s mom’s hair on the weekends and also every night after dinner and both of them seem to enjoy it immensely. But the best thing i’ve observed is these days sis seems more relaxed and comfortable with herself and cares a lot less about hat anybody says..one might say she even carries off her oiled hair as a personal style statement! and mom too is very happy that her daughter enjoys oiling so much..not unlike you said she would be. So..thanks a ton for all the help and I’ll be posting about their routines and how their hair looks regularly from now on.

    love,sayan

  72. Hey Priyanka here! I'm a college student and I don't like to go to college with oiled hair and I have a hoday on Wednesdays and Sundays! So on every Tuesday afternoon( after I come back from college) I have a maid who comes over to my house for full body and head massage( both the massages are with cocount oil) and then my hair is oiled too! She gives me a nice head massage while oiling my hair. And then I don't wash my hair on Tuesday either on Wednesday I directly wash it on Thursday morning before going to college. And when my hair is oiled, my maid usually combs my hair after oiling it on Tuesday and she ties a tight plait. After she ties a tight plait I don't open my hair till Thursday morning before washing my hair. I have a holiday on Sunday as well. But then my maid comes on Friday evening ( as she is busy on Saturdays and Sundays, and I feel its good to get a massage twice a week) to give me a massage. So she oils my hair also on Friday but on friday she oils my hair very heavily and then I go to college with oiled hair on Saturday. And on Friday she doesn't tie a plait for me as I have college the other day. On Saturday my mom ties a pony tail for me. And then I wash my hair directly on Monday!

Since my childhood I very much fond of this habit because its our family tradition to follow such habits. After I got married I used to stay with my husband and his only younger sister Meena she staying with us to continue her high school studies. I made myself comfortable with my new life during this one month I saw Meena never oiled her hair and not even combing properly. I can't tolerate to watch her dry hair but she has good mass of hair grown till her hips. So I spoken about this to my husband and he told like my heavily oiled longhair and I too oil his hair after he returns from his office but next day morning he wash his hair. So my hubby gave permission and even he too happy to hear that I have a care about her little sister. The next day after my hubby went to office I called Meena and told her to sit between my leg while I sat on the small stool. Meena immediately saw the large bottle of coconut oil and she hesitate to sit and also she told me that she never oiled her hair and she don't like oily hair. I tried to convince her but its not worked and I got irritated with her adamant words so I moved to her and swiftly given two slaps on her left face cheeks. Meena covered her face and creid in pain I then grabbed her hair and pulled her to the stool I forced her to sit between my legs and opened her dry pony hair. First I combed her hair some time to detangle it then I begun to pour handful of coconut oil and applied on her head and following I took several handful of oil to apply all over her hair and scalps finally I just directly poured huge amount of coconut oil on top of her head then I tapped her head and given good massage and spread the oil allover her hair with good nice combing. Meena still crying while I combing her heavily oiled hair, finally I tied her oily hair in a tight twin braid with the middle parting her precisely.

  75. Hi I'm Rhea and I stay with my masi in udaipur even my masi did the same thing with me. I never used to oil my hair and I used to go to school without oiling my hair. But then when I started staying with my masi on the first day of school she woke me up very early in the morning, she asked me to take a bath quickly ( I thought it was because of first day of school she didn't want me to get late that's why) and then she came into my room with a bottle of oil - cocount oil. And then she asked me to sit down and open my hair but I denied to do so. And then she asked me twice for the same I denied both the times she got frustrated and she only opened my hair and just poured oil into my hair. Once she poured oil I couldn't say anything but to sit down because she warned me if I tried getting up she would oil my hair very heavily. So she oiled my hair properly , no hair was dry or left without oil. My hair was fully oiled and then she tied two plaits and then she took me to the school. I was in 8th grade that time. For the first time I had oil into my hair for the whole time , even in the school I felt a little awkward and after getting back home my massi told me to change my clothes and get my comb to her room. So I took my comb into my masi's room she opened my oiled hair and then combed my hair and again tied plait. But this time it was only one plait one tight plait. After listening to the way my massi oiled my hair , my mom was soo happy that I go to school with oiled hair. And now I am in 9th grade and here this is my oiling routine down by my massi : Every Monday morning after taking a bath before going to school proper hair oiling is done for my hair and for my masaji's hair also. And then every Friday . I wash my hair only on Sundays! When oiling my hair she gives me a head massage. Now I think I've got used to this hair oiling. During vacations my mom oils my hair only on Friday morning and then I wash my hair on Sunday.

  77. Hello Namratha, It is nice to hear from you. I have been too busy so was unable to write all this while. My mother decided to come and visit me as she wanted to celebrate her birthday with me. So in the morning she arrived and she asked me to let the landlady know as they are friends. When I reached the landlady house she was getting her hair oiled by maid. I told her of my mother and she said will come with me once oiling is done. The maid told me since I am here to get my hair oiled by her. The landlady made me sit in front of her, and she poured oil on my hair. Then she tapped the oil evenly on my head, and she combed my hair for some time. By now the maid had tied an oily bun to the landlady hair. Then she started oiling my hair. She oiled it heavily and also tied a bun. Afterwards we left for my house. When we reached my mother was getting her hair oiled by the maid. She was happy to see us all together and asked me how come I got my hair oiled as she was going to do it. She asked me to sit it front of her so she could comb my hair, while chatting with the landlady. After some time the landlady maid opened the oily bun of landlady and started combing it. Once the landlady came to know of mothers birthday, she said will prepare a special oil and all of us will have oiling session and put flowers in hair. My mother liked the idea and said that she and me are going to grandmother place for a week and she wants me to come with her. The landlady suggested we wash our hair on Friday and keep it dry for oiling session. By now enough combing was done and mother tied a bun again and then poured some oil over it and tapped the bun. On Friday my mom again oiled my hair, before washing it.Once all our hair was washed. I helped comb and tie loose braid to mother and maid. After some time the landlady arrived with her maid. The landlady loosened mothers hair and started combing it. She and her maid parted mothers hair and combed it straight for some time. After some time my maid opened my hair and started combing. Then we all switched and combed each others hair for some time. Then landlady made my mother sit and poured the oil in the center of the head and massages it. All of them then spread the oil and made sure all parts were oiled heavily. Afterwards I combed her hair while the maids oiled each other hair and landlady oiled mine. Once everyone was done oiling heavily, landlady asked mother what kind of hairstyle she would like. My mother said all of us should have a tight long plait with flowers around it. She tied a tight plait to my mother while the maids combed my hair tight and middle parted my hair, applied more oil and tied a tight plait. After everybody had a long tight plait, landlady put flowers on everybody hair. Mother said since its her birthday, I have to put flowers too. Since. I couldnt refuse mother I let the landlady put flowers in my hair. So all of us had flowers in our heavily oiled hair. Afterwards my mother said we should have more heavy oiliing. sessions at grandmothers house as she is very strict about oiling.

  80. Hi everyone, good to be back.I'd like to share a hair oiling story of my sister which happened quite recently. As I've posted before after resolving her issues with mom about hair oiling my sis has been quite keen on keeping her hair oiled heavily all the time, not till dripping as she has a job,but quite wet nonetheless.Well mom hasn't been in town for the last 2 weeks as she had to go to Mumbai to attend a relative's marriage. We didn't accompany her coz of work.So for a week sis had no onw to oil her hair and it was getting frizzy and dry and she appeared very agitated by that. She prefers someone oil her hair and massage her scalp for her instead of doing it herself.Naturally after 2 3 days i told her to oil and she asked me to do it for her.I agreed. So since then I've been oiling her hair in mom's absence, not as heavily as mom as I'm not an expert, but pretty good anyway. She even told mom about this and mom agreed I should keep oiling her but use more oil.
So this entire week she's taking a holiday and I'm going to oil her hair till dripping twice everyday, till dripping. The first session was yesterday and I'd like to describe my experience.
So I woke up pretty early in the morning and woke her up as well and made her take an early bath, and asked her to shampoo her hair. After drying she sat between my legs while I sat on a stool. She had bought 2 bottles of hair oil in anticipation, although I wouldn't need that much to make it dripping.
I combed her moist her and straightened it out and took handfuls of oil in my hand and rubbed it all over her scalp.I anted to get every strand wet and make her comfy,so i ran my fingers laden with oil through the sides and every inch of her scalp, until her scalp was shining and the hair had parted smoothly and become wet.
Then i started on the length at the back, this was more difficult as there was no hard surface to rub the oil on,so i just smoothed it out with small amounts of oil at first. It took quite some time, but when it became sufficiently smooth i started rubbing it down with handfuls of oil until it was as oily as her scalp.
Now it was time for the real champi,so I started pouring oil directly onto her scalp and, emulating mom, started patting it with the chap chap sound.I spread the oil throughout the length on her hair, back scalp everything until it was dripping.
Then I combed it straight and pulled it back tightly and made a wet single braid. Then I rubbed her face with oil,as she had asked me to do and massaged her forehead. She looked so cute and oily her whole head was shining,it was simply beautiful.
    This took about 1,1.5 hours.
Now she did have a lot of oil in her hair already, and I mean a LOT,but since both of us have oil fetishes,we decided we would do another oiling at night. So at about 8 after dinner,I opened her braid and dripped oil straight from the bottle onto her scalp and spread it.She was ecstatic, and after I retied the braid it looked like she had just dipped her hair and face in a vat of oil.The light was actually shining off of it and she looked sooo cute.We decided we would do this every alternate day for the rest of the week, really enjoy ourselves.I only wish she had holidays more often so I could oil her like this.
Cheers guys, hope you enjoyed reading about my experience.

  82. Hi namratha didi,
Good to see you back. Well few weeks back, something good happened. I was having a casual conversation with my maid and she said she wont apply mehndi on her hair from now on as it is a time taking process and she will use chemical dye. I was amazed to hear it because that was what i wanted. By the way u havent answered my questions that i asked you few weeks back

  83. Dear Namratha
Hi. Sorry for not posting it for long. Was a bit busy. Just finished my routine heavy oiling and braiding, pinned the Jasmine flower gajras tied by aunt in the afternoon and thought of writing. Today being Saturday we had our group oiling session as routine. Had a bit of long session today almost 3 and half hrs as my lice combing took long. After oiling my hairs heavily one of the maid took licecomb and started licecombing me and she got lots of them ( I was having lot of itching since morning so I knew this would happen) so the other maid also took another lice comb and she also started lice combing me. Both of them sat on my sides and parted my hair from middle and started licecombing me from both the sides. It was very painful but I had to bare it. But its a routine and I am habitual to it. Then after reverse licecombing and killing lots of lice, aunt took from them and pour some more oil and combed my hairs and tied a tight single plait. Then she opened the bag containing 4 packet of jasmine flower gajras and I knew its time for hair decoration, she opened the first packed and I saw it was 12 gajras for each of us. She looked at me and I understood today I will be the first to wear them. I quitly went and sat facing my back to her and she pinned them in my braid. After tieing to maids and herself we left.
Nowadays I have increased the amount of oil but am not getting sufficient time for licecombing. So aunt was bit angry with me. She has warned me if I will not take proper care then she will tie my hairs in 2 folded plaits and tie ribbons in it which she did yesterday. The other neighbouring lady with pixie was Laughing since aunt tied the ribbons in front of her. She came and touched my double plaits and commented, nice hair style. But I ignored her since she does that most of the time seeing me wearing bunch of flowers.
Now this has become a routine, as after group oiling aunt won't compromise without hair decoration with flowers. And I also have become used to it. Few days back when she was tieing flower gajras in my hair I asked her why she is found of it so much, she told she had got this habit from her mother. She believes that beautiful long hairs should be decorated with flowers to make them look more beautiful, so when she was young she used to tie flowers daily and everyone young with long beautiful hairs should wear flower everyday. I asked her whether she is wanting me to follow her. She replied yes, as I have long and beautiful hairs. I told her to give me some time.
I am very confused about it , as i like them wearing it for 2 days a week but I can't imagine myself with bunch of gajras hanging in my hairs 24/7, 365 days although I look very beautiful wearing them.can you help me with your suggestion.
@Raj- hi, good to see your post. Wanted to know your experience of wearing flowers in heavily oiled hairs.

    Regards

  84. Hi Raj, thank you for your message. I am very happy to be reading your posts again. Its so nice that even your mom is now part of the oiling sessions. Can you give us more details about the special oil that the landlady prepared? As for the flowers, I find it a little weird for boys to wear it, but if you are happy (just as Mani), then no problem dear. Keep sharing your hair oiling sessions dear.
    Thanks,

  85. Hi Sayan, thanks for your encouraging post dear. But as I always say, if you people do no post regularly, the blog will not be healthy and will surely be dormant. I am glad to see a few posts recently. I know I have been absent as well, but from now on, I will try to comment and post too. It is always a pleasure to get your hair oiled by someone else, specially an elder person who knows about hair oiling and massaging. Even I sometimes feel so lazy to massage my head after oiling, so I will simply apply a lot of oil and just tap. I also note that once you get used to oiling, you will always love oiling your hair and if you don't get to oil it, you will be unhappy and even the hair will look unhappy too. Hence, it is important to maintain a good routine.

From other members, I also noticed that some people are afraid to use a lot of oil. There is no reason to be afraid of the amount of oil. It is always better to have more oil than less oil. Hence when oiling, some people will apply little by little and it gets into a long and tiring process.

If I can say something, the hair is most fragile when wet (with water). Hence, I would advise not to comb wet hair dear. If the hair is damp, just apply a bit of oil before combing. As for oiling the length, you just have to hold it in one hand and pour the oil with the other hand. You do it from top to ends and then you can rub the length in between your palms lightly. The massage took one and a half hour? Wow, she must surely have enjoyed it so much.

I hope you also have lots of oiling sessions with your sister and that you are not afraid to pour a lot of oil dear. Keep posting.

  86. Hi Rahul, thank you for your message. Unfortunately, for me and I believe for other members, this is not a good news. Your maid decided to go for chemical dye rather than natural dye. I think we all know how damaging this can be. But natural means always take a longer time and requires patience.

As for your questions, most of the time my mother in law will do it for me. But if she is not here, I will do it myself. It surely takes a lot of time, but the results are just great.

    Keep posting,
    Namratha

  87. Hello Mani,
Thanks for your message. I am sad to learn that you got more lice. As I said earlier, you need to follow a strict oiling and in your case lice combing routine. Try not to miss any of them. Again, I am so surprised about the length of these sessions. I would give anything to be part of such lenthy oiling session, and that too in group. I did tell you that in case of the neighbour makes fun of you, just reply to her politely. In this case, you could have replied: "Yes, it's a nice hairstlyle which requires long and thick hair. Unfortunately, you cannot wear such a lovely style." I am sure she will stop bothering you then.

As for the flowers, I really cannot help much. As I said, for me it is weird that boys wear flowers in their hair. But if you need to do it due to circumstances, then as long as you are happy with that, it's fine. Otherwise, we need to talk and find a solution through compromise. You cannot do something that you don't like to please others. But you can try to find a middle solution where both are happy.

    Keep posting dear,
    Namratha

I would like to thank you for your messages. Newcomers and new experiences and posts are always welcome. As you see, we are very few to be posting and commenting. Maybe others are shy about this, but I would request you to please keep sharing your experiences and stories. There are many readers for sure, but those who post are less.
We await your updates very soon and I feel really glad that the blog is back lively again.
Thank you so much to each and everyone of you and please let's keep on posting regulary, if not daily.

  89. Well namratha didi look at the coincidence. When i commented that she will start using chemical dyes , the next day i saw a bowl of mehndi and a comb alongwith it so i was sure she will apply it. I think she applied later that day coz the next day i saw, it was solid. And then she heavily oiled her hair after removing henna.

  90. Hello Namratha,
It is so nice to hear from you. I hope your oiling sessions are going great. Yes it's nice to have my mother in the oiling sessions. She and grandmother make sure that heavy oiling is done everyday. The flowers were a one time thing as my mother insisted on it. It is tough to refuse my mother about oiling and hair decoration. As right now I am at my grandmothers house with my mother, oiling till dripping is done everyday. My grandmother has long thick hair which is still black and only strands of white hair. Every morning she oils my mother's hair very heavily and combs it very tight. She is impressed with my long hair and she oils it heavily too. On Sunday morning while oiling mothers hair she called me and said I need to get heavy oil head massage. She said her maid is an expert and will do it. The maid like my grandmother loves oiling and always has a very tight oily bun tied on top of head. She is very strict about oiling. The maid came with a big bowl of oil and a stool. She sat on the stool and told me to sit between her legs. My mother was getting her oiled too. The maid open my hair and combed it very tightly and poured a lot off oil in the middle of the head. Then she massaged my head for a long time.. She told my grandmother that my skin is very dry, so grandmother told her to apply oil on my face and hands. I told her no need it to but the maid took a handful of oil and massages my face and then my hands. Once that was done, more oiling was done till dripping. Then she tied a very tight plait and made a bun. After oiling was done my grandmother said more oiling would be done. In the evening. The maid then made me comb her hair as my mother told her I comb and oil my maids hair. She said she will get her hair oiled and combed by me everyday. Please advise Namratha, is oiling till dripping good everyday and oiling the maids hair?.
    Thanks
    Raj

  92. Hi Rahul, I am indeed very happy that she still used mehendi instead of chemical dyes. When you mean the next day it was solid, is it that she kept the henna on her hair overnight? The heavy oiling after henna is a must to bring back moisture to the hair. Henna is indeed a very good natural conditioner but many people don't like it because of its smell and because they fear it will stain the hair. However, if henna is applied on heavily oiled hair and if you mix the henna with more oil than water, it won't stain. I use henna like that only. I mix 80% oil and 20% water and apply henna on my very heavily oiled hair.
    Keep sharing,

  93. Hi Raj, yes my oiling sessions are as usual dear. I never miss my routine. I am glad to read that oiling till dripping is being done everyday. I am sure this will be so beneficial to the hair. I often notice elder ladies with thick hair, much healthier than young girls of today. This is because in their times, heavily oiled hair was a norm. They never left their hair dry. Moreover, they were using more natural products and even the oil were home-made.

Well oiling till dripping will of course not damage the hair. On the contrary, this will make the hair better. However, it will depend on your schedule. I don't think many people can oil their hair till dripping daily. Being a housewife, it is not a problem for me. As for oiling the maid's hair, if you are happy with it, then there is no problem dear.

I also wanted to point out something, oiling till dripping is not like pouring bottles and bottles of oil whereby the oil will be flowing continuously from the hair. There are some Youtube videos showing such videos and many people think that when I say oiling till dripping, it means just like in the videos. These are simply commercial videos and no one will ever oil that much. The max that I oil is till the hair is fully chap chap. The oil may flow like sweat on the face, but it will not be like these videos whereby a bucket can be filled with the oil that's dripping.

Keep posting and new comers, keep on sharing as well.

    Thank you,
    Nam

  99. Dear Sakshi, please find below a comment posted just now by Sasta Sundar. You will find all your answer in this reply:
Oiling is the best possible way to replenish lost hair and boost hair growth. Oiling your hair with a good hair oil at least twice a week is very beneficial for your hair health. Also, children not oiling their hair, mostly have their eyesight weak. So, oiling can be considered good for your eyesight as well.

I hope this clears out your fears.
    Happy oiling,

  103. Oiling the hair is advised by almost every Indian grandmother and mother. They believe that oiling the hair is the best way to keep the hair moisturized, thicker, shinier and healthier. The famous Indian oil massaging is popular as this gives all the benefits in making hair healthy. So what is that correct way to oil the hair?

Make the partitions of the front section and pour oil over the scalp, then slightly massage the scalp. Continue doing the same for the entire scalp until the head is fully drenched. Partitioning the hair will make way for the scalp to get the oil application better. Once you have applied the oil heavily on the entire scalp. Move your fingers to give a gentle massage.

A lot of people would rigorously massage the scalp. That can be good but when you are struggling with hair fall then doing this rigorous massaging will weaken the hair roots. Thus massage very gently, never rub too much. Another way to do it is by tapping the head with the palm of the hands after pouring. In this way, the hair is not subjected to any rubbing.

Then take more oil and then apply this on the hair strands or length. Pouring the oil, apply all the oil over the hair until the length is also drenched with oil. Also bear in mind to give more oiling to the ends of the hair as it is the most damaged part. Once the entire head and lenght is fully oiled, then make a braid or a bun.

It is always good to leave the oil overnight so that the hair and scalp can absorb maximum oil. I recommend very heavy oiling at night so that maximum oil is absorbed and also because some oil will be absorbed by the pillow. So, if you are keeping the oil for overnight place a plastic sheet over the pillow as this will not stain the pillow. Or you can use a darker pillow cover which will not be visible, once you have washed the pillow cover. Else the oil stain takes 3-4 washes to go completely.

This post is specially for Meesha who posted about hair fall. It is also advisable not to vigorously rub the hair when doing a shampoo. Always bend your head backwards (facing up) when washing your hair. After shampoo application, just rinse the hair with cold water as cold water closes the pores of the hair and hence it will be less prone to damage when drying. Another important thing is to never comb the hair when it is wet or damp.

Drying the hair is also important. Always try to dry it in the sunlight which has important vitamin D. Do not rub the hair with a towel strongly but do it very gently. If you need to use a hair dryer, always make sure that the device is at least 15 cms away from the hair. When the hair is damp and you need to comb, just take a small amount of oil and apply to the damp hair before combing. This will help to seal in the moisture in the hair. You can them comb and style in the way you like.

I hope this will be helpful to you all. Today is Friday and I hope that all of you will be oiling heavily tonight and during the weekend as well.

    Keep posting and sharing,
    Happy oiling to you all,
    Namratha

  104. Hi Sakshi, thank you for your post again and I am very happy that you took it a positive way. You need to understand that oiling can never harm your hair. On the contrary, it provides a lot of benefit. It is well known that after a good oiling and massaging at night, you get very good sleep. Very often, when I massage my girls hair, they tell me they feel so sleepy and sometimes even doze off.

Can you please tell us how your mother oiled your hair Sakshi? Whenever you people post about your hair oiling, please provide details of how the oiling was done. We each have our own way of doing it and there is not bad way of doing it. But we can try to find the best way of doing it.

    Happy oiling and keep posting

  105. Okay so I'll start with week's first oiling ! My mother oils my hair on Sunday morning. I wash my hair on Sunday morning and once it is dried fully, she combs my hair and then makes a middle parting... After making a middle parting she pours Max oil in the middle of the head after that she pats my hair she pours the same amount of oil at the back and on the sides She also makes sure to put oil above the esr part becoz dat part is generally missed ...! After that she oils my lengths and then she keeps massaging my hair for lyk 10-15 mins after dat she combs my hair nd ties a plait :) also sometimes she oils my hair when it's slightly wet!!!

  106. Hello Nam,
I hope all is good and enjoying your oil sessions. My grandmother and mother totally agree with you that oiling till dripping should be done till little oil trickles on face which can be massaged on to the face. They say that massaging the scalp with coconut oil is very important as it helps hair grow stronger and helps keep head cool and nourished. We do oiling twice everyday as grandmother is very strict about oiling routine. In the morning heavy oiling is done and evening oiling till dripping. My grandmother hair is long and so nourished as oiling was done everyday from the time she was young as you had mentioned in your last post. My mother too used to oil from young age. They are both happy that I am following the same tradition as them and I have long hair. All four of us are paired and are responsible for taking care of each other hair. The maid and me paired together and are responsible for taking care of each other hair. Grandmother said this way I will learn to take care of my own hair and follow a good routine. What do you think Nam ? We are allowed to oil and style hair the way we feel like. Mother also said that oiling each other hair is about taking great care of hair and oiling in groups is a very positive thing as oiiling itself is a healthy habit. Every morning we would sit in the courtyard for oiling. Grandmother would be oiling mother hair while maid would make me sit between her legs and oil my hair. She would first part my hair and pour oil on the scalp and massage it well. After wards more oil will be poured and she would tap it making chap chap sound. Then oiling and combing. I would then do the same to her hair. Yesterday after oiling her hair, I told her I will tie new hairstyle instead of long tight plait. So I made a sagar choti and she really liked it. I said I will teach her how to make tie sagar choti. I took some more oil and rubbed it over the choti, and the choti was oily and bit shining. She looked in mirror and said choti is really oily and tight but is missing something. I asked what. She said flowers, so she asked me to come with her to buy flowers.. She tied my hair in bun and we left for market. At the market we bought enough flowers for grandmother and mother also. At the store two ladies walked in and the maiid recognized them. It looked like they too had an oiling session as their hair was heavily oiled and both had long tight plaits. The maid was showing them her sagar choti and they seemed impressed. She called me over and introduced me to them. The maid told them that I do oiling and made the choti for her. They were happy to hear that. One of them saw my oily bun and commented I have nice long hair as she touched it. We then talked about oiling sessions with the ladies. The ladies want to learn new hairstyle too so they asked me to teach them and in return they will oil and take care of my hair just like the maid does. What do you advise Nam?. We got home and tied the flowers to the maids choti. Later after oiling I tied the other flowers to mother and grandmother, while the maid was oiling my hair till dripping and combed my hair and tied a tight plait as. she always does. My mother was happy that I suggested a new hairstyle which means I am taking greater interest. Any thoughts Nam ?.

    Will post more later.

    Thanks

  108. Hello, thanks for sharing your oiling details Sakshi (I guess that post is from you - just leave your name so that we know dear). That's a nice routine and your mom is doing a great job. I guess she oils your hair very heavily, but is it till dripping? And afterwards, when do you wash your hair again? Can you give us your routine over a week please? Oiling damp hair is also a good habit as the oil will help seal in the moisture. But it will also depend on the climate. If the humidity is high, then it might make her hair look bad. Keep posting and sharing.

  109. Hi Raj, yes very often we oil till fully dripping and massage the excess oil on the skin as well. I have also often seen elderly ladies having long and thick hair even though they are aged. This is due to the fact that in early days, oiling was compulsory. It was a trend, a tradition and compulsory. Hence, all those years of oiling show their benefits now. I think she is right in what she is doing. It is always nice to have someone doing the oiling and massaging for you. But you should also know how to oil and massage your own hair. So if ever you are alone, your hair will not suffer as well. It is a good opportunity to get more people in the group. I believe the more we are in the group, the more fun it will be for oiling of course. Happy oiling to you all.

  110. Hello Namratha,
I just wanted to share something amusing. As on Wednesday we wash our hair, my grandmother suggested that to prevent future dandruff problems, I should use lime or sour curd in my hair and leave it for like twenty minutes before washing. So she asked my maid to decide what should be used. I looked at her and suggested to choose lime as I preferred it. But she smiled and said she has to choose as she is responsible for my hair and said sour curd. So after she oiled my hair heavily she combed my hair very tightly. Then grandmother came and gave her a bowl of sour curd, which she fully used on my hair, even though I told her to use only small amount. As we were supposed to oil our hair in the evening, I thought of an idea. So I asked my mother if we had any hair ribbons in the house. She said there must be some and later gave me two. One was red and the other green. So when we sat for oiling in the afternoon, I told the maid I will try something new hairstyle. After she oiled my hair till dripping, she tied a bun. Afterwards I oiled her hair and made a middle parting and parted her hair.I made two plaits like a schoolgirl and massaged more oil on the plaits. Then I tied both ribbons on top of the plait. As the maid is a bit big in size and hair till knees, it looked funny. Both my mother and grandmother laughed. When she looked in mirror she was not amused and she had to keep the hairstyle for the day. So later as she had to go to market she was bit embarrassed as she is having schoolgirl plaits with ribbons on Afterwards she came and told me she will get even in an amusing way. I thought the incident was funny. What do you think Namratha.?. During oiling the maid was telling my mother about the two ladies and my mother was happy to hear out so she suggested that the ladies can come and join us for oiling session anytime. I am happy to know even though you live outside India, you know so much of the traditions here.
    Thanks

  111. hey sakshi here!! my mother oils my hair till dripping. here dripping means the oil comes dripping onto my checks and neck! She usually oils my hair in the night before i go to sleep. many times when she oils my hair and she massages my hair i often feel sleepy because the way she massages is very relaxing.. my other also prefers oiling my hair in the night so that when i go to school the oil is not dripping but the oil is soaked properly and when she oils in the night that time she can oil more heavily rather than oiling it before i leave for school. she usually uses hot coconut oil with methi seeds in it.

  112. hey sakshi here again i wanted to add for the oiling during damp hair! whenever my hair id damp that time my mother uses more oil than what she uses usually! so when she uses more oil and ties my hair it looks neat. Usually oiling on damp hair is done on sundays and on sundays its a very heavy oiling session for me because on school days we cant have extra heavy oiling session

  114. Hi Raj, yes lime / lemon juice is well known against dandruff. As soon as I read about hair ribbons, I guess that it would have been for a double plait, like school girls. Even my elder daughter hates this style because she says that's for kids. But nice that the maid agree to do it. Thanks for your kind words Raj. Whether in India or not, I am Indian for sure :)

  115. Hi Sakshi, thank you for the details. Oiling till dripping is quite common for people who believe in the benefits of oiling. Another good habit, as you rightly said, is oiling the hair before bed and leaving the oil overnight. Even I oil my daughters' hairs at night rather than in the morning too. I also always add methi seeds in all my oils dear. It is really good for the hair. Keep it up Sakshi and keep sharing your oiling sessions.

  116. Hi Gunjan, thank you for posting and welcome to the blog. I would request you to please take some time and read through the different posts and you will understand how oiling is so important for the hair. I like the fact that some Indian schools makes it compulsory to be with oiled hair. This should have been adopted by all schools, colleges and even universities. I am sure this helps a lot during study and for concentration. Hopefully is it compulsory and whether you like it or not, you will have to oil your hair for school. At least, Indian moms can make it compulsory at home.

  121. Hi Gunjan, I think it is a very common thing in India. And I personally believe it is one of the best practices. To teach children discipline since their early age. And also, when they grow up, they will still maintain that routine of hair oiling. Coconut oil is one of the best oils as well. I believe however that this rule should have been applied to teachers as well. They represent discipline and they are the one who teaches us. As I always say, example should come from above. They cannot force a student to oil their hair if they don't oil their own hair. But this is just my view. Keep posting Gunjan,

  125. Hi Namratha,
I came across your blog couple of days ago and have been reading it. I am male and have almost waist length hair as I used to be in band when in college. I use a lot of hair products but no oil. For the past two weeks I have a lot of itching and I dont know why. Please advise. I have maid who has been pestering me to oil my hair. She thinks I might have lice or dandruff as I don't take care of my hair. She has very nice thick long hair and I always complement her on it. She oils it regularly. I always make an excuse of work to not oil my hair. She said if I don't listen she will forcefully oiil my hair with coconut oil. Right now I have taken some time off from work, and she said now I have no excuse. How do I ask her to oil my hair, I feel shy. Please advise. Everytime she oils her hair she will tell me me sit in front of her but I refuse.

  127. Heyyy Priya here after a long time! So today being a Sunday my mother asked me to get up a lite early... My mother asked me to wash my hair yesterday because last Saturday she oiled my hair very very heavily the oil was dripping in my neck and checks ..actually my hair got very wet with oil. And since Saturday I didn't wash my hair. On Sunday night before sleeping like 2 hours before sleeping she again topped up my hair with some oil and this putting a little little oil before sleeping continued till last night. I made it sure to be with oil for a week without washing ! So today I'm planning to wash my hair and keep it dry for some time. My grandmother is coming home today from village and she will oil my hair thoroughly for tomorrow's school and she will also put some oil in my ears ( I am so scared for oil in the ears) And I don't have to describe how my grandmother will oil my hair...u know how grandmothers oil our hair....very heavily because they like oiling our hair.... So I'm waiting for her to oil my hair nd I m sure she will oil it more heavily than my mom! ! ! And as its monday tomorrow i have my school too so she will make sure that im heavily oiled and neat ..... She will oil my hair sometime around 5 O clock....because i sleep by 7 0 clock ususally so 2 hours before sleeping she oil my hair....and this time also ive promised my mom not to wash my haur for whole 1 week....i can stay in oiled hair for long...as in my school also its a compulsion 2 come in oiled hair so i dont feel chipku with oiled hair....its normal 4 me now.. Please give ur suggestion nd opinions

  130. Hey Priyanka here! I'm a college student and I don't like to go to college with oiled hair and I have a holiday on Wednesdays and Sundays! My maid has made these rules for me of not washing my hair..and if she checks that my hair is washed on Saturday she doesnt oil my hair and doesnt even give me a body massage. I don't know but i am scared to go out in oiled hair. I don't feel confident in going out with oiled hair. I've asked her soo many times not to oil my hair on friday but on friday she oils it more heavily than tuesday also.she comes and checks my hair on sunday if its oiled or no. I don't feel good in going out of the house with oiled hair. Please help me!

  131. Hello I'm a mother of 2 daughters. My daughters make a fuss of not oiling their hair. I tried explaining them it's benefits and how it would help them to look better and even in studies. But they still refuse to oil their hair. And in their school its a compulsion to be in oiled hair but then too they don't listen to me. Other than forcing them I have no other option. Many times I try oiling their hair when they are asleep so that I don't have to force them but at times that's also not possible. When I'm left with no option I have to ask my maid to hold them and I oil their hair or vice versa, they cry after their hair is oiled. And I can't even oil their hair lightly I oil it very heavily . I normally oil their hair on Sundays , so Sundays is a very tough day for me. It's becomes very difficult for me . I have to ask the maid to hold them and then oil their hair . I can't see then crying . But once their hair is oiled and on weekdays after they come back from school they don't cry . I tried explaining them everything!! And if they go without oil to the school the maids in the school oil their hair in a rough manner and even spoil their dress so I want to oil their hair bymyself and send them to school neat and tidy. Please give me a nice idea that can help me ? Byw, I am Rekha .

  132. Hello Namratha,
How are you?. Hope oiling sessions are going well. On Friday during our oiling session, I asked my mother if once a week we should be oil free as hair can be dry. My mother disagreed and said oiling is to be done everyday, even the maid agreed. She said hair can be dry after washing hair for an hour before oil is applied again. What do you think about having one day oil free ?. On Saturday the maids two friends came over to join us for oiling. Both of them had their hair lightly oiled and in a loose braid. They both wanted sagar choti after oiling. First I started oiling the maids hair while both of them oiled each others hair. After oiling the maids hair I combed her hair and left it open. Afterwards the maid made me sit between her legs and started heavy oiling. While oiling my hair one of the other ladies sat in front me and I combed her hair applied some oil and made a sagar choti. I did the same to other lady too. Then once the maid finished oiling and combing my hair, she sat in front and as. I was combing her hair to make sagar choti. One of the ladies said if I was going to going to make double plaits and tie ribbon. We all laughed and I made sagar choti for her too. Then once all three had sagar choti. They looked in mirror and were very happy. The maid then made me sit in front of her and combed my hair with middle parting. While combing she told the ladies, that next week she is going to style my hair in a very different way and I have to keep it all day and go out with her. The ladies inquired what hairstyle and she said they have to come to house to see it. I got worried and told her if she is going to tie double plait. She said no but will be amusing. Now I am a bit worried and my mother said I have to follow rules. Please advise Namratha.

  133. Hello Gunjan, thanks for sharing and posting in the blog. My first question is are you a girl or a boy? From your posts, I guess you must be a girl. I agree with your point and maybe you should discuss this with your class/student representative so that you can bring up this point to the authorities. I have often read about this. As a punishment, hair will be oiled till dripping and with a bad-smelling oil and in front of everyone. But I am quite agreeable to that as it will discourage others to come with dry hair.

I don't see any reasons why you should refuse your mom Gunjan? If you know very well that you will be punished for it as well. Hence, it is a well-deserved punishment. I am sure your mom was very happy to see you like this. How long is your hair by the way? I think it is preferable that you oil your hair at home than get it done at school. Or maybe you like the way the maid oils your hair. But as long as the hair is heavily oiled, it is good.

  134. Hi Rahul, I hope you are doing. Can you please explain how this change happened? Why did you start liking it now? Anything happened? There is no best wat to tell something that saying the truth and being frank. So just tell her that you don't mind about the mehendi and that you would like her to use it as much as she wants. You can also tell her that you talked to me and I advised about the benefits of henna. To show her that you are knowledgeable about it, you can also tell her that henna has a drying effect and that it is advised that she oils her hair heavily after henna. I am sure she will be more than happy to hear this. Of course, you need to keep us udpated too. Hoping to read from you soon.

  135. Hello, thank you for posting and welcome to the blog. As I always advise, please leave your name when posting so that I can easily reply back. I am impressed by the length of your hair. However, I think you already know what is causing the itching and I guess your hair must not be in its best health as well. As you said yourself, you used a lot of hair products. For me, there are very few good hair products, which includes oils and henna. Your maid is very right about oiling your hair. I am sure she also oils frequently and heavily and for this reason she must be having some very great hair. Do you have lice or dandruff? You need to ask her to check it but whatever you do, you are bound to oil your hair only. So if you adopt a positive attitude towards it, you will be very happy. Otherwise, you still don't have any choice, and have to undergo the oiling. So better take it positively. I think she is also right in the point of oiling your hair forcefully. But for me, it is very simple, if you want good hair, then be ready to do the right things. Otherwise, don't even expect to have good hair. Again, how to tell her is very simple. You simply have to tell her that you noticed your hair is bad as compared to her and that you want her to take care of your hair from now. She will be very happy and I am sure within a few days, you will be very happy also. Keep us updated about how it is going.

  136. Hi Priya, how are you? I hope you are doing fine. I am very happy to read your post of the blog. I wanted to ask you something, are you the same Priya that was posting long ago about how your aunty oiled your hair? There was a Priya who was staying at her aunt's place for studies and her aunt oiled her hair (Priya's) very very heavily (aunty also oiled her 2 daughters hair and even her own hair too)?

Fridays and weekends are special days actually. They are the best days for oiling as you can apply a lot of oil and leave it for a longer time. I am glad to hear that your mother oils your hair so heavily. I am also very pleased to hear that you wash your hair only once a week. It seems that your mother follows my routine very closely. Grand-mothers are the expert in oiling as you said and pouring oil in the ears is also very beneficial even though it is very uncomfortable too. I am glad that your school also promotes hair oiling and made it compulsory. However, I have one question: If you oil very heavily on the eve, the next day before school, will there be more oiling? Do you go to school with oil dripping hair? Please share your routine with us in as much details as possible (and I request the same to others too).

I agree with you on the point that people are scared or shy to be in oiled hair. It's only because of what others say of course. But as I always say, those people are simply jealous that we adopted this best routine while they cannot do it. So you just have to ignore them because your hair will be surely much better than theirs.

    Keep posting,
    Namratha

  137. Hi Kavya, welcome to the blog. It seems to me that you had also posted before or it might be someone else or a different forum. But anyway, I am very happy to see your post here. I am happy to learn that your mom is also just like us, typical Indian moms and proud to be! Your school seems a bit more open on these but as I say, oiling has so many benefits specially for students and I believe that in should be made compulsory in all schools. I think your mom must allow you to wash your hair at least once in a week. Leaving the oil for a long time is good, as long as you are topping it up with fresh oil and combing your hair. Remember that oil more easily attracts dust and dirt and hence the importance of putting new oil and combing too. As for the hairstyle, I believe you can talk to your mom and suggest her to keep your hair in other styles. For oiled hair, I believe that a plait or bun is good. Most of the time I am in a bun during functions because I still keep my hair heavily oiled. But if I have oiled a bit less, I can wear a braid then. As for the double plaits, I think it is a good style for school, but mostly for kids. As I told you, my elder daughter does not like to be in double plaits and I accepted that she wears a single one. It is just communication and the way you talk to your mom. If you ask for something sweetly, it should go fine. From your post, it is clear that you go to school with oil dripping hair! But doesn't that spoil your uniform? Do the teachers allow this as oil dripping hair might be difficult to handle at school. When you say that on Saturday night your mom oils your hair the heaviest? What do you mean exactly? For me heavy oiling is till dripping and that's what I do to my kids (and myself) every night. So do you mean that your mom oils much more than what she oils on weekdays (till dripping)? Please share with us. I also believe that if we adopt a good routine, we should stick to it whether in holidays or not. If you are in holidays, then I would advise to increase the routine (frequency or amount of oil). Keep posting and keep sharing with as much details as you can.
    Happy oiling,
    Namratha

  138. ssage usually go hands in hands. Can you please share the details of the oiling as well for both Tuesdays and Fridays? Also, once the oiling is done, you don't touch your hair again? No combing again? No topping up on the next day? Can you also explain what is very heavily for you? Is it till dripping? Do you then go to college with oil dripping hair the next day? Does your mom oil your hair again the next day? Your maid devised a nice routine for you, which can be ameliorated if you would accept to oil again the next day when you don't have school/college. I am happy to see that she is very strict about oiling too. Can you tell me why you are scared to go out with oiled hair? You need to first ask yourself what is the reason and then we can help you. But remember, all those who do not sport hair oiling have their hair in a worse condition that those who oil their hair actually. I think it is quite simple to know the reason. Awaiting your reply.

  139. Hi Rekha, thank you for posting and welcome to the blog. I think I have gone through this as well, but the best way is to explain the benefits of oiling to them. They need to realise how important it is and they need to also see how their hair is improving. You need to compare their hair with others who do not oil and make them see the difference. What are their ages? If in the school it is compulsory to be with oiled hair but they refuse that you oil their hair, don't they get punished at school? If it is so difficult, then talk to the school teachers/authority and ask them to always oil their hair so heavily so that they will prefer that you oil their hair at home with less oil. Oiling their hair while they are sleeping with make them hate oiling more. I believe you should make them start appreciating the oiling rather than finding ways of doing it without their knoweledge.

If still nothing works, then I guess you will have to do it forcefully with the help of the maid. But after oiling, you always need to tell them the benefits and maybe one day keep their hair dry and open and compare with others whose hair are in a bad condition. Do you oil their hair on Sundays only? Once a week only? Also, sometimes as parents, we need to take some harsh decisions. I believe that children should not be beaten. But I also believe that sometimes a slap can make them see reason and make them aware that we are the authority and that rules set by us are to be followed only. So try your best and take a lot of patience and courage. Keep us posted of how it is going Rekha.

  140. Hi Raj, how are you? I also disagree with your request and agree with what your mom and maids said. Is there any specific reason you want to keep your hair dry one day? It seems the oiling sessions are now getting more fun with more people and oiling followed by hair styling. That's great dear. Keep it up. I also wonder what style your maid will do? At least you know it won't be double braid. Maybe a braided bun? Do keep us updated dear. And simply follow the rules happily.

  141. Hi Rekha here. Even I don't believe in beating kids but sometimes when things don't happen and they irritate out of the level ofocurse we need to raise our hand. I don't believe in doing that as well. But I recently raised my hand. And it seems they got scared and they sat quietly for the next session.

  145. Hello Namratha, My name is Venkat. I wrote on your blog seeking advice on oiling because of itching. Yes my maid does oil her hair regularly and only uses coconut oil. Whenever I am home, she makes it a point to oil her long hair near me and then tell me to get my hair oiled and checked for lice/dandruff. Yesterday a friend of the maid came to the house while she was oiling. The maid told me to sit with her friend and talk to her. Her friend had a long loose braid, and she told me that long time ago, she too had lice problems and got rid of our by oiling and licecombiing. Now her hair is all free. She told me to touch her braid and feel how her hair has changed for good. I touched and felt how strong and soft her hair was. The friend said my hair does not look good and needs to be taken care of. Then the maid said my hair can be the same if I let them oil my hair. The friend suggested to check my hair for lice/dandruff. Somehow she convinced me so I said she can check my hair but no oiling for now. The maid again got angry as she wants to oil my hair forcefully but she agreed for now. The friend is coming today check my hair. Do you think I can clean my hair without oiling. I can use hair products. Please advise Namratha.

  146. Hi Gunjan, thanks for the info. I am glad that you apologised to your mom and I think you should only accept whatevet she tells you now because parents do everything for the wellbeing of their kids. Yes, very often ayurvedic oils may not have a great smell but they do wonders on the hair. So when you reached back home your mom oiled your hair again? Was it heavy? Tell us about that day when you came back home dear. You cannot drop school just because you don't like oiling your hair, that's stupid. You need to only focus on your studies and not on your looks too much. I think you deserved whateaver punishment you go. First you go against your own mom and secondly against school authorities. I am 100% agreeable to your school rules and conditions. That's called discipline.

  147. Hello Venkat. I think you should simply follow the routine of your maid, regular but also heavy oiling with coconut oil. The best solution (natural way) to get rid of lice or dandruff is through oiling only as the maid's friend said. They both are right in saying about your hair. I think by now you should have read several posts about the benefits of oiling. Oiling forcefully is not what I recommend. It is up to you if you want to use chemical products to get rid of lice/dandruff. You have a natural way which is 100% beneficial, so you have to decide dear. I have already given my opinion on this.

  148. Hi namratha didi,
Actually i like red wine color of hair on women. Last time when she applied mehendi, she achieved this colour and so i started liking it suddenly and she heavily oiled her hair as well the next day.. What i hate is orange color of mehendi but she left it for so long that it turned her hair red wine which i like. And as you know i hated it because of its smell, but that day when i saw the bowl of mehendi on table, it was not smelling and i took my nose above the bowl still i couldnt say whether it was mehendi or not. So i inserted my finger in the mixture then i got to know that it was mehendi.

  153. Hello Namratha,
It's Venkat again, so as I said before the maids friend came and her hair was heavily oiled and tied in a braid. The maid was busy oiling her hair in my room. The maid then told her to check my hair. As my hair was in a loose bun she said first to comb it. She sat in front of me and put my hair over my head and started combing down. She said my hair is very rough and dry. The maid then said they can make my hair as good as theirs. The maid came and sat behind me poured a lot of oil over my head and it started dripping. I was helpless between them as they both were massaging my head very strongly. Then the maid pulled my hair back and held it at the tip of the hair while the friend poured oil in middle of hair which was again massaged. Then after a lot of oiling they both combed my hair on either side and looked for lice/dandruff. The maid commented she is happy, finally she got to oil my hair. Her friend after some time commented that there is a lot of dandruff but no lice. After combing, again more oil was poured on the tip of the hair and massaged. My hair seemed wet with oil. Then after more oiling and combing, the maid tied a very long tight plait. Then her friend combed the maids open oily hair and tied a long plait too. Then the maid made me look in the mirror and my hair was shiny and wet. She said they will do it again next day. So Namratha finally they got to oil my hair and it was nice, but does it need to be done everyday heavy oiling. Can only small amount oil be applied. Please advise Namratha
    Thanks

  154. Hi Rekha, I think you are right in doing so. We should set the example for the kids. If we want them to be with heavily oiled hair, then we should also be ready to be with heavily oiled hair. Otherwise I find it quite unfair that mothers will oil their daughters hair heavily while they keep their own hair dry. This will surely cause frustration in the kids. The same applied for school, as I said, I find it unfair that students are made to oil their hair heavily while teachers can come with dry hair. However, I don't see why you should call someone who oils heavily champu or chipku or whatever. We are free to take care of our hair as we want and if others don't like it, so be it! But I don't like the fact of mocking someone just because they oil their hair and I don't think we should encourage that as well. Hence, Rekha, I feel that you should be called by your name only.
    Namratha

  155. Hello Juhi, thanks for your post and welcome to the blog. However, I would request you to call Rekha by her name even if she requested to be called Champu or Chipku. I think we should first respect one another. I agree that oiling is very important but I disagree with the way you do it. Sometimes kids won't listen and are stubborn. I said it many times that I am against beating kids, but sometimes one slap is required. And one slap is just one slap. Nothing like you described right/left and beating her when she washes her hair. I believe that there are other forms of punishment, but educating the kids is most important than beating.

Also why do you oil her hair till dripping before going to school? You should understand that other students will make fun of her and that will surely make her hate oiling. This will have consequences on her own life and your family life as well. How can a child concentrate on his/her study if she has oil dripping all over her face at school? If you want her to be in oiled hair always, then start by educating her about the benefits of oiling. And make her understand that your rules will apply whether she is happy or not. If need be just one slap is enough. Do you keep your hair heavily oiled always? Do you oil your hair till dripping too when you send your kid to school? I think this is all wrong.

  156. Hi Venkat, how are you? I am sure your hair would be rough and dry since you do not oil them at all. I think you should be happy that the maids are taking care of your hair. Growing long hair is beautiful for sure, but takes a lot of time, patience and care. And having someone to help you is always a great feeling. So why don't you just take it positively? As for the frequency and amount, it will depend on you and your schedule. If you feel that oiling daily and heavily is difficult, then try to find a routine. Like oiling heavily a few times a week and other times you oil lightly. Why don't you ask your maid to try to find a good routine. I am sure things will get better with time.

  157. Hi namratha didi,
My maids sister was also there that day. They both were going to apply mehendi on their hair. My maid came and asked me for the gloves so that her hands wont get stained. They both applied mehendi on eachother. Then i dont saw her sister later but my maid kept it for a very long time. Then after washing, she and her sister heavily oiled their hair and tied them in a bun.

  158. Hello Rahul, thank you for your message. So both of them use henna and oil? That's really nice. However, I would have liked having more details about how they applied the henna and how the did the oiling and so on. Please let us have more details.
    Thank you,
    Namratha

  159. They didnt used henna mixed with oil as they were using it for colouring purpose. She applied it first on her sister's hair and then on her own hair. She detangled her hair by using a comb and then put on the gloves and started with application process. She also had a mirror with herself. She pluck the henna paste and took sections and started coating them one by one and piled all the sections together in one plait and tied a bun on top of her head. She was done with the application in 10-15 minutes. She didnt covered her hair after applying henna. Then in the evening it was solid and i saw her touching the solid mehendi on her head again and again. Then she went to her home and washed the henna. The next day when she came her hair were already oiled so i dont know how she applied the oil.

  160. Hi Juhi here! Thanks for the concern. My hair is always heavily oiled. I believe in following old traditions. My daughter is 16 years old. She makes a fuss always with oiling related things. I try to be calm with her but then when she tests my patience, I have no other option but to beat her and forcefully oil her hair. I've been trying to find a nice way to make her love oiling hair but I don't think she'll even love it. I would need your help for that. My hair is always oiled till dripping! And in my Daughter's school they have to go with very heavily oiled hair. Even her friends come like. But as for last few months I stopped sending her with oil dripping but I make sure to oil her hair very very heavily . I want her to be in oiled hair all the time. I don't know why, but I think that Indian tradition should be followed. I've explained her every benefit of hair oiling. And she's not small , not to understand about oiling benefits. She's 16. Would love to get your help.

  161. Juhi here.On Sundays I oil her hair the most. She's cheated me too many times. She goes washes her hair after I oil her hair. But to punish her, I oil her hair very very heavily the moment her hair dries after washing. She's got long hair and thick hair. So I want her to maintain it and not get into the chemicals. But she wants to colour her hair and put chemicals on her hair. I agreed to her that she can keep her hair dry on one day in the week. But if she cheats me I don't let her keep her hair dry. I need to be strict with her.

  162. Hey Gurbaxani here...! I don't agree on keeping your hair oiled all the time....your hair needs to breath too. Once in a while for a day or two you need to leave it dry. That's my opinion towards oiling hair and rest when you oil your hair it should be the heaviest!

  164. Hi namratha didi,
Today my maid will be applying mehendi on her hair again. I didnt asked her to apply it but i saw that the mixture was already prepared. I was watching tv and she came to me with the container of paste in her hands and told me to tease me that she will apply it today on her head but instead of showing some dislike i just said okay no problem. I will give you the details after my encounter with her when she has applied it on her head

  165. Hello Divya, thank you for your posts and welcome to the blog. I wish you all the best for your studies dear. I find it very disappointing to read that you don't want to join a school only because of hair oiling. Right now, your focus should be on studies and not hair oiling. Why don't you want to oil your hair? What's the reason? I would ask you to take some time and go through all the posts on the blog. I am sure you will learn about how beneficial hair oiling is for the general health and body. I really can't understand how young girls hate hair oiling. This has always been part of our culture and India is well-known for having the best, jet black, healthy, silky hairs. I wonder if it is still the case today.

I just hope that you change your mind and accept that you have to oil your hair. I think it would be better if you concentrate on your studies and let your mother take care of your hair. You just have to accept whatever she says happily and everyone will be happy. I hope I have helped you Divya.
    Take care,
    Namratha

In a week, how many times will she apply mehendi? Can you also tell me how much paste she prepared? You should have told her that you will help her with the application as well dear. I am sure she would have been more than happy to hear that. Hoping to hear from you soon with lots lots of details about how she applied the henna. when you talk to her, you can also advise her to do a heavy oiling the next day after henna to condition the hair. She will be surely impressed by all what you know.

  170. Hi namratha didi,
This time she only prepared very less amount of mehendi and she only did her roots. And as you said i should help her with application. Then please tell how may i do it because i dont know how to do it. And i am sure she will be happy because i have noticed that some of her hair on the neck are not coated properly so she will be happy to get some help.

  171. Hi Divya, thanks for your post again. I have already told you my views. At this age, you should focus on your studies and education more than on hair oiling and your looks. I agree 100% with your mom and school laws and hence I really can't understand what the problem is. As it is, hair oiling is compulsory in your school. So whether you like it or not, you have to abide to the rules.

As for your mom, you simply don't have to make her angry and obey to what she says. If the amount of oil is a problem, then find a compromise. Ask her to oil your hair heavily only before school but not make it dripping. Then when you are back home or when you don't have school, she can oil it as much as she wants. You can also try to ask her to oil as much as she wants at home but to at least let your hair dry for half-day after you wash it. Though I don't see any benefits or reason in doing that, but I think it's more a communication problem than oiling. So you need to be able to sit down and talk calmly and sweetly to your mom and I am sure she will do the same. I hope this helps.
    Take care,
    Namratha

  172. Hi Rahul, it's sad that she prepared very less today. But I can understand if its only to touch up her roots. She won't need much then. But maybe you should encourage her to always apply a lot of mehendi dear. Tell her that mehendi is a very good conditioner and if she is going to apply, it's not worth apply a little only. She should apply it heavily, just like oil. As for the application, I will be more lengthy than oiling as well. The best way to do it is to comb the hair free of tangles first. Make a middle parting and apply the henna in the parting and rub everywhere. Then you make sections by sections and apply it to each. In the end, you can start coating the whole head and then the length until all the hair is covered in a thick layer of henna. The section by section makes sure to that the henna reaches the roots too. I hope this will help and I hope you will give us all more details about the henna application next time.
    Take care,
    Nam

  173. This time she applied it after a month. There was a mehendi cone in the fridge so just to be frank with her i told her that she may take it as its of no use for anyone in my house. This is after she told me that she is also going to apply mehndi on her hair as well. Few days back i showed her some grey hairs on my head and she told me some home remedy to stop them. I dont know when she will apply henna again in future. Please tell me a way to start a conversation with her regarding henna as i am very shy

    ReplyDelete
  174. Hi Rahul, the easiest way is the direct way. You can just tell her that you read a bit about mehendi for hair and that you talked to me about that and you found out that it is indeed a very good hair conditioner. Hence, you have changed your opinion about it and you are more than ever ready to learn about henna and that you want her to be your teacher. I am sure she will be very pleased to hear that. You can ask her to teach you how to apply henna and that you will do it more regularly for her as well. But keep in mind that you should not forget the heavy oiling after henna dear. We all hope to be reading details about your sessions soon.
    All the best,
    Namratha

    Rahul

  176. Hi Rahul, I did detail the application process to you in my earlier post. You have to do it section by section, part by part and afterwards proceed with coating the whole head. Next would be to coat the length too and the ends as well. When all is coated, you can tie the hair up and then apply again directly on the tied hair. Unfortunately I will not show my photos online. I am sorry about this and many people did ask me about that. But I prefer not putting any photos online as everything gets viral so quickly. I hope you understand my point.
    Thanks,

  178. Hi namratha didi, i guess there wont be a problem if you show a pic in which your head with mehndi is shown from behind only with no coverage of face so there wont be a problem even if it gets viral. And i am a male so i feel awkward applying mehndi on someone so how about i hold tthe mirror for her when she is applying it and tell her about the spots if she misses any ?

  183. Hello Namratha,
How are you ?. Over the weekend, the maid oiled my hair very heavily and that too twice. On Saturday in the morning after she oiled her hair more than usual I asked her why. She said as now she will be oiling my hair regularly, she and I will have to keep same routine of oiling. Afterwards she made sit between her legs and poured coconut oil and start massaging, after some time she kept pouring oil on different part of hair and rubbed it in. After like one hour of oiling she combed my hair with middle parting and tied a tight plait. While oiling I felt some oil dripping down my face. I asked her to stop and she said not to worry as on weekends looking will be done more heavily. Any advice Namratha. ? In the evening her friend came by and she had a dry ponytail, she was very happy to see my hair heavily oiled. She made me sit in front of her while she checked my hair and the maid oiled her hair. Once her hair was also heavily oiled she took some oil and applied to my hair too. After some time all three of us had heavily oiled hair with same hairstyle. Her friend told the maid that after some days I should start combing their hair and it would benefit group oiling. The maid agreed and said as now she is going to ensure my hair is oiled everyday. What do you think Namratha? I have never combed anybody else hair before and oiled hair everyday. She didn't even allow me to wash my hair for two days.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Hello Namratha,
I hope all is well and enjoying oiliing session, The maid did make an amusing hairstyle and I was embarrassed too. I don't if I should write it in the blog. Other wise the weekend oiling went well.. My mother and grandmother were away, so it was just the maid and me. In the morning we would oil and comb each other hair, and then her two friends would join us in the evening. They would make me comb their hair a lot while standing in front of mirror. Then oiling would follow. We would. oil till dripping each other hair. As they love sagar choti, I would tie it for them, and the maid would tie me too a sagar choti. On Sunday I tried a new hairstyle on them and they loved it. The maid friend suggested that next weekend we should do our oiling in an open field under a tree with some other ladies. They want me to come but I feel shy. In. don't know what kind of hairstyle they might do. Please advise. Namratha. As of writing this now, my hair is oiled heavily and iin a tight bun.
    Thanks
    Raj

  185. Hello Venkat, thank you for your post. I am very happy that you adopted a nice oiling routine with the help on your maid. I am sure you must have enjoyed the one hour oiling and massage. You are lucky to have her to take care of you. I think there is nothing wrong to oil more in weekends dear. So just enjoy the oiling. My opinion is that you should just be happy and follow whatever they say dear. This will make everyone happy and will keep everyone's hair beautiful too. If there is anything that you are not happy with, then try to talk about it and find a middle solution. Keep posting dear.

We would all want to know about it of course. So you had a nice group oiling with the maid and her two friends. Thats nice. And you also did the sagar choti hairstyle for them. I am sure they must be happy about that too. Doing oiling in an open field under a tree with other ladies is just my dream. I hope that at least once in my life I will be able to experience that. I would advise you not to worry about anything and just go for it. I am sure it will be the best experience of your life. Let us know how it goes.

  189. Oils for different types of hair

Oiling one’s hair is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your hair. Hair oiling strengthens, protects and holds moisture content in the hair. The lightweight oils can be used as a leave in conditioner to add shine and tame flyways and frizz or deep conditioning treatments that you can leave in overnight if you wish.

The first step in hair oiling is to determine the right one for your hair type. Listed below are recommendations based on each hair type. Oils such as jojoba, almond, coconut, argan, sesame and olive can be used alone, mixed together and essentials oils may be added.

Jojoba – can be used for all hair types and is very lightweight and soften the hair. Jojoba is much like your own hair’s natural oil. Hair that tends to tangle, break and split usually responds well to this oil. It also makes an excellent hair conditioner.

Olive – a heavy oil with a distinctive color and odor. Olive oil is used to treat dry scalp conditions and hair that is extremely dry and/or damaged. This oil work best on coarse and thick hair and will strengthen and smooth hair cuticles. This oil contains antioxidants that promote healthy hair and scalp.

Sweet Almond – is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E. Sweet Almond is light and penetrates easily. Note that people with nut allergies should not use this oil.

Argan – absorbs quickly, highly moisturizing, rich in Vitamin E, and a natural antioxidant. This oil is highly recommended for damaged hair.

Coconut – heavy and greasy oil. Herbal hair infusions are often infused with Coconut Oil. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair and it softens the hair and conditions the scalp.

Often, a mixture of the different oils will provide multiple and mixed benefits to the hair. My most common mix is coconut (mainly), mixed with olive oil.

I hope this was helpful to you all. Wish you a happy Friday and a happy oiling.

    Nam

  190. Heyyy Juhi here, I really need your help !

    ReplyDelete
  191. Hello Juhi, apologies for my late reply. As I said in my earlier post, I cannot help much. It is your duty as a parent to educate your daughter about the benefits of hair oiling. If still she doesn't want to oil her hair, then you can be strict with her and make her oil her hair. Slapping and beating is up to you. As I always say, I am against beating kids, but sometimes one slap is required to show them discipline. But most important is educating them about the benefits of hair oiling so that they start liking it and will adopt it by themselves. And they will also do the same with their kids one day, hopefully.
All the best dear. I know being parents nowadays is not easy, but it's our duty and we have to do it correctly.
