Namratha
Dear Namratha
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful initiative on your and your husband's part. Like many others on Forum Jar I loved reading about the oiling routine but was afraid to post since so many people would react negatively.
I will be a regular here and looking forward to more participation from other ladies and even men on hair oiling routine, hair care and maintenance and hair styles.

ReplyDeleteSo good to see you here Priya, hoping that more ladies join us and contribute to the age old tradition.

ReplyDeleteHappy oiling
Hello friends,
ReplyDeleteI hope you all had a nice and oily weekend. On my side, that was the case with Mom in law still being around. And as I had said, for me it's always heavy oiling with Mom in law since I am the only one at home with her during the day. But I was happy that for the weekend, someone had taken the responsibility of oiling everyone's hair heavily. Moreover, Mom in law had more control that I had. Even my hubby stayed home both days with oil dripping hair because his mom forbid him to wash. I was so happy to see my hubby like that.
Today evening, my husband and daughters washed their hairs. My daughters got heavy oilings again from Ma (Mother in law) but not husband (because of office tomorrow). Tomorrow morning before school, I'll be oiling my daughters' hair again, heavily but not till dripping of course.
As for me, Ma asked me not to wash today since tomorrow morning she will be applying henna on my hair. She has already prepared a big iron bowl of henna paste and has let it to set overnight. I will update about the henna session tomorrow.
I hope all you people post about your weekends routines or daily oiling sessions as I did. I will always repeat: I need your help to keep this blog alive.
Happy oiling and wish all of you a good week ahead
hii. i read ur post, it's gr8 even i oil my hair heavily twice a week, how u feel after oiling ur hair plz reply me
DeleteHi. I loved reading all your posts about hair oiling on the other forum. However I'm not Indian, I live in Europe. Do you have any advice for Western women living in Western society? Here people think that a person with oily hair is dirty, greasy and disgusting and doesn't wash themselves. I like hair oiling but I can only do it heavily on weekends as I have a job (typical office job). I only oil lightly on weekdays (not enough to see, just enough that it looks shiny but like I have put on a serum or cream, not oil), and not at the roots, where it would be very noticeable. I oil heavily on weekends but wash it out if I am going out (don't want people to think that I am a greasy, dirty, disgusting person who doesn't wash). What would you do (Namratha and other readers) if you were living and working in a Western country? Also, what do you use to shampoo with? I am trying to go away from all chemicals and use pure soap. Do you use conditioner? In my country Ayurvedic herbs aren't available (I live in a small, rather remote town where there is no Indian community, trying to get anything from India here would be like, I have never been to India unfortunately but I imagine it would be like trying to get maple syrup or Spanish chorizo in a village in India). In fact, even coconut oil is hard to find although I can get it at a pharmacy, but it is not cheap like in India.
ReplyDeleteI do oil heavily when I go out in the summer, because people think I have just come from the beach (but not to work).
I want to oil my son's hair too, but he hates it. I can only do it by telling him it will keep lice away, and then he still runs off to wash it off almost immediately. Now I will tell him it will keep him from getting bald like his father, but I don't know if he will care or not, since you know, kids think that it will be such a long time before they become adults, that they don't worry about what can happen when they grow up. Thank you for reading me.
I'm sorry, I don't know why but it didn't post my avatar from my blog (so that you can see I am a real person with a real blog). I will try it again.
ReplyDeleteOh, I think I need to sign into my account to do it (I have WordPress, not Blogger).
Hello, I am Serena again. (The last 2 comments were by me, but I don't know why, it wouldn't post who I am in the comment. That is why I don't like Blogger and prefer WordPress.) I am reading about your henna. I love henna. I have a post in my blog about henna. I love everything about taking care of yourself naturally and not using chemicals. You can have beautiful hair and skin without chemicals.
ReplyDeleteSerena
DeleteHenna is wonderful but the only thing to remember about Henna is it does dry your hair and so it is important to keep the hair oiled so that it provides moisture and does not end up being too dry. I am sure Namratha does not need to worry about dry hair with her MIL around :-)
As far as alternative to shampoo and conditioner I would recommend baking soda or apple cider vinegar. I have not used apple cider but use baking soda every other day. It does not generate foam like shampoo does but does a way better job of cleaning the hair and the scalp.

Recently I have been thinking of making home made oil. My mom and grandmother used to make oil at home but here I have got a bit lazy. The great thing about home made oil is it can be altered to suit a particular hair type.
ReplyDeleteCoconut oil is great but at times some ingredients are needed. I use Dabur Vatika Oil and it is wonderful, the only thing I don't like is the smell of lemon. Lemon is to control dandruff but I don't have that problem.
If I remember correctly my mom used to make oil with coconut oil, almond and olive oil with a small portion of castor oil. Castor oil does tend to get heavy. Add curry leaves, amla (Gooseberry), rose petals for smell, henna and some other herbs.
Any ladies here know the recipe for home made oil?
Thanks
Bharthi
Hi Serena & Barthi,
ReplyDeleteYes I can understand that it's hard to find Indian product everywhere. Fortunately, I do not have this problem. And as Bharthi said, henna is a good conditioner for hair, but it dries the hair a lot. But if you do oil the next day after henna, your hair will look great.
As for your son, I think it's a good idea that you tell him about baldness and how his friends will laugh at him. But don't force too much else he might simply hate oiling all life long.
As far as washing is concerned, I wash with soap (crude soap not scented one) on Sunday only. On Wednesday, I will simply wash with hot water only. I don't like using shampoo because of chemicals too. Even the crude soap has chemicals but it's less damaging than shampoo. Moreover, I also need to clean my hair and scalp at least once a week.
Bharti as for homemade oil, Ma prepares it directly from coconuts. It's 100% natural but it gets that rancid smell rather quickly too. So I prefer buying pure unscented coconut oil which is quite cheap as well. I do not like the scented ones (parachute or dabur) because I believe these also have chemicals.
I use only coconut oil and don't mix oil together. It has been years that I used only coconut oil.
I hope I managed to answer your questions. I am very happy to see you posting here. I just hope more and more people join in and share tips and routines for hair oiling.
Wish a happy oiling to you all
Thanks for the reply Namratha. I agree with the perfumed or scented oils. Once I tried Dabur Amla and not only did it smell horrible but it damaged my hair quite a bit as well. Agree is it is not home made then the best thing to do is Parachute or some other brand of pure coconut oil.
ReplyDeleteI remember my Grandmother used to use castor oil but that is too heavy, smelly and takes a lot of effort in washing it.
Interesting thing I read about washing hair some time ago that really we spend so much time in washing hair but it gets it cue from the scalp so the best thing is to clean the scalp. Once the scalp is clean it will pass on the message to hair.

Just as an update about my routine today... After breakfast it was hair oiling time. I was sitting on the stairs oiling my elder daughter's hair when Ma also came and sat behind me. My hair was heavily oiled from yesterday and was in a messy bun. So Ma let my hair loose and combed it with her fingers and very soon she was pouring oil on my scalp and tapping while I was oiling my daughter's hair. The chap chap sound was so clear when she was tapping that my daughter shyly said Mom, don't make it drip because of school. It was so cute. Both me and Ma started laughing and I told her not to worry. By the time I had finished oiling both my girls' hair, Ma was still oiling mine.
ReplyDeleteAfterwards, hubby and girls left and I oiled Ma's hair heavily too. We did all house chores and had shower and went to the market. And when we returned, Ma told me she will apply the henna. So I changed and came back to the stairs. Ma had that big bowl of thick henna paste besides her. This would have been more than enough for 3 or 4 long hair ladies. I just sat down and she started applying to each and every section. She was parting my hair with her fingers, taking handfuls of that paste and rubbing on my scalp and hair. I could hear that wet sticky sound when she was rubbing her fingers in my hair. She continued coating my whole head, my whole length (all stuck together with the henna) and my hair was feeling so heavy. She coiled my hair into a top bun and again started coating my hair and even the bun.
After around one hour, I could feel the henna getting dry and solid and when I was moving around, some henna dust was falling. Ma noticed that too and told me she will oil my hair and apply the henna again in the afternoon. So again, she let my hair down and oiled heavily again and coiled up. She did the henna again at around 2.30 pm before my daughters came back from school and since then I stayed with the henna on.
I had my shower around one hour back and my hair is still wet. I didn't oil because it will keep moisture the whole night and so am waiting a bit in front of the fan. Ma will be waiting to oil my hair again.
With the oil, the henna didn't stain my hair (and I like it like that). Ma told me it was only to condition the hair that she is applying henna. If I want to color, I should not add oil at all to the mixture. I should oil only after washing the henna. But that's fine for me. I don't mind having a few grey hair :)
So this was my day. Feeling really tired after washing out all this henna from my long hair. So I said let me just update you and I'll go and watch some tv. Ma already oiled my daughters' hair and it will be my turn again soon.
Happy oiling
I have a mixture of coconut, olive and castor oils that I use on the roots only, castor oil is too thick and sticky to use everywhere. I have pure, homemade soap (no chemicals) which is what I use as a shampoo now. I wish there were people around that we could give each other head massage and oiling. I don't think my son would be thrilled exactly to have to give me a head massage haha! Here in Europe people don't oil their hair, they just put on serums, creams, hairspray, etc.
ReplyDeleteHi namratha sis., my hearty welcome to ur effort taken for oil fetish peoples. Pls post urs more experiences and also post how do u initially get into this heavy oiling rituals.
ReplyDeleteother oil fetish ladies/ Gents, pls post more experiences of ur hair oiling and how u begun this habit
Thanks Anonymous... but it would be nice next time if you leave your name at least. I will be sharing more of my own experiences, but still I see that the blog is not going on well. Anyway, I will leave it till next week and I will ask my husband to remove it since it doesn't seem to be lively at all.
ReplyDeleteThanks to all those who already posted

ReplyDeleteHello every one..read all the posts...sorry I wasn't posting cause of my xams....but now as my xams are over I'll be posting regularly... :D
ReplyDeleteYes so I'll describe today morning's event...Now as vacation is going on...we all are at home only...except Seema didi...she goes to office...but yes me,Aunt and Ruchita ...we are at home...
At 7:30 am Aunt woke us up..and made buns of our hair..den me and Ruchita brushed nd did all morning stuff..and took bath together...cause der's draught..not in our region but in India...so we are saving water...yes so after bath we had our breakfast..and went upstairs...den after about an hour Aunt called us...I went with comb and oil bottles...Aunt oiled Ruchita's hair first...she was looking so sweet..with oil dripping hair.and her face was wet with oil..n cheeks n nose shining...den it was my turn....Aunt opened my bun and started combing...she was telling me dat my hair has improved alot..she combed for about 6 to 7 minutes....and parted my hair..den she asked me for the oil bottle....in no time i was sensing cool oil on my head..and again it was flowing from my face....I was hearing chap chap sound...in about a 1/2 an hour I was looking like ruchita...Aunt emptied more dan half of dat 500 ml bottle on my head...she also gave me a nice champi, and a face massage..she never lets us use sunscreens n all...we use coconut oil only...my Mom's gonna come here next week...and yes she also is gonna get same type of oiling by Aunt..as my Aunt is older dan mom...Mom will have to tolerate dat... XD XD XD...both of dem quarrel about oiling hair..nd the quarrel ends up in mom getting her hair oiled till dripping...actually dey both love doing dis...rightnow m sitting wit very heavily oiled hair..dripping has stopped..but my neck and back side of my gown are drenched in oil... :D :D :D..
Love U all... :) :) :) :) :)
Thank you for the update Priya, you are indeed lucky to have an aunt who takes of your hair. Do you get to oil her hair or she does it herself? I had an elderly aunt who used to take care of all our hairs but refused to have her hair oiled. She joked that she did not trust us girls with our fashion and that we would not oil her enough. When she got older and her hands hurt she let us oil her hairs and she constantly kept scolding us for not putting enough oil.
ReplyDeleteAs an update I had my hair soaked on oil over the weekend, ran out of regular oil so thought of trying a different oil - Nihar perfumed coconut oil. The smell was pleasant, not over powering like other oils so liked it a lot. I did seem to lose more hairs but that is normal while changing hair oil/shampoo, need to give hair some time to adjust. So will use it again this weekend and see if it is any better or else go back to Dabur Vatika or Parachute.
Happy oiling everyone and looking for an update from Namratha :-)
Sorry forgot to add my name, this is Bharthi

ReplyDeleteHello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI had completely lost hope to see this forum alive. I am so happy to see that Disha, Bharthi and Priya all working hard to keep this forum alive. I am really so happy. Priya, as usual your aunty is doing a great job. Since you are in holidays, I guess it will be such heavy oilings daily. We would be grateful if you could share more of your oiling sessions. We'll also do the same and let's flood this page with lots of heavy oiling sessions.
Thanks to you all,
Happy oiling
Namartha
Dear Namratha, it seems that your blog is not working. It is very sad. Even I didn't like the comments on forumjar and I thought that this one would be a much bigger success. But even this forum seems dead now. It is such a pity.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed very sad to see the lack of participation and discussion but it is not dead yet. I am sure other ladies are just busy and have not had time to update here and in given time this forum will be thriving.
ReplyDeleteSince today is the beginning of the weekend I will be soaking my hair in oil. Once I go home there will be heavy oiling followed by putting hair in a bun and then some light oiling before going to bed.
The same routine to be continued the next two days, the only regret is there is no help in the form of daughter, sister or other family member so I will have to do it myself.
-Bharthi
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteYes it's the weekend and I am sure in many households there are lots of heavy oiling... Just like mine, with mil and my daughters... we are all dripping with oil since yesterday and that will go on till Sunday for them. For me, it doesn't make any difference now that Mil is staying with us. Daily she is taking care of my hair. And now shew is hennaing my hair twice in a week.
I thank Bharthi and all those who continue to post here. I just wish to see this forum so lively again. Bharthi, please give us more details about your oiling too.
Please keep posting because sometimes I just feel like closing this forum.
Thank you for your help,
Happy oiling to you al
Another dead forum... But good try

ReplyDeleteDear Namratha R, I went through your blog. Let me share about my hair oiling routine. I am 37 year old male and I have been growing hair since last 3 years for my spiritual up liftment.
ReplyDeleteI have received spiritual advice from my master not to cut my hair and I have been following it religiously. My present hair length is one and half feet. Basically my hair is dry and frizzy and they become drier towards end and there is a problem of split ends too. But since it's a vow of not cutting hair, I can't think of any parlor for hair trim or similar action.
Instead, I apply hair oil daily. I tie my hair in bun on top of my head while bathing and then once bath is over, I thoroughly apply hair oil. I start from head and them massage it and then apply it up to the ends of the strand. Usually I apply resin oil as it is less oily but at the same time gives shine like normal coconut oil. After thoroughly applying hair oil, I comb hair with brisk strokes for 50 times and once I feel that the hairs are softening enough, I wear them into a nice and tight braid. Sometimes I wear them in a bun too.
I wash hair once in a week and before washing; on earlier night, I take oil message of castor and coconut oil mixture. I use Clinic Plus shampoo. I don’t use conditioner instead hair oil is a conditioner
I consider hair as god's gift and they help me in meditation as energy carriers, I am taking great care of my hair and when I apply oil or comb or wear them in different hairstyle, I forget myself and I feel as if I am doing it to god. I am just a namesake.
I don't apply Henna or any that sort of conditioner but thinking of doing so. Because of this regime, I am yet to see a grey strand in my hair. While meditating I wear hair in bun on top of my head and it's an antenna to receive positive energy from universe. Should hair be dry, you sense lots of heat but oiled hair act as coolant. I think, keeping long hair is a great tradition of India and taking good care of hair gives divine feeling. It changes your life. God bless
hye madam , i m great fan of ur heavy oiling videos, i m 32yrs old male, even i started doing heavy oiling by seeing ur videos, keep it up and plz post more oiling videos. and also give me some oiling tips

ReplyDeleteIndian Hair
Hello! There haven't been many comments here lately. I still enjoy hair oiling, I oil twice a week, usually coconut oil, sometimes olive oil and sometimes mixed with castor oil. I always wash my hair after oiling before I go out though. My hair is long, beautiful, very strong (you can pull a strand for a while and it won't break), shiny, soft and curly. If I don't oil for one week though it gets dry and frizzy and fried looking. Now here in Europe hair oils are becoming very popular and it is getting easier and easier to find hair oils from different brands, especially argan oil is very popular. Most commercial hair oils here are oils mixed with silicones and some chemicals, but I do like to use them when I am going out because they still put oil on the hair and make the hair soft and shiny, but the hair doesn't look oily, the way it does if you use pure coconut oil. This way I can put on oil and have it on all day, and no one knows it because the hair doesn't look oily, as here in the West it is not good to go out with oily looking hair.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad most European don't know about hair oiling, most Europeans have big problems with their hair, their hair is dry, frizzy, it is falling out a lot, they put on chemicals to try and make it look better but it only looks worse, so they put on more chemicals.
I hope people keep posting here about your hair oiling.
omg!!!!finally i found a forum of ma desire
ReplyDeletenamrata didi m in pg at bangalore...doin ma pg course...i luv oiling ma hair wid loads n loads of oil....bt ma frnz teases me for heavy oiling....nw literally i stopped oiling ma hair heavily:(:(:(
ReplyDeleteDon't stop oiling cuz they will be jealous of u when they will be old and will have many hair problems . but u will have none!
Deletedis is really making me to feel sad...no is replying at all to ma post..!!!
ReplyDeleteSneha
ReplyDeleteDo not feel sad, friends will make fun of you. If you like oiling your hairs then continue doing so. One day they will get jealous of your hair and realize the importance of oiling hair.
We all have gone through this, I am from a middle class family and I went to college where rich and fashionable girls went and they kept calling me chipkoo but I ignored them.
Now I am 45 and still not a single strand of white hair while the other women have hair fall and other problems and issues.
You can compromise and do less oiling during weekdays and do heavy oiling on weekends.
Hope this helps and would love to hear about other women's routines and different treatments.
I am trying to make a homemade oil with hibiscus flowers, has anyone used that? IT is supposed to do wonders for hairs.
-Seema

ReplyDeleteDear all,
ReplyDeleteI am writing again after so long because I was thinking if I should continue posting in this blog or not. I lost my email address and password and cannot log into the blog again. I have seen a little interest from some members here and that is the main reason why I want to continue this blog.
However, if I will be posting alone as before, then it is of no use. If you all wish this forum to be live again, then you have to contribute as well. If anyone knows my email address, please give it to me. I will see the response from my post today and I will decide if I should continue to share or not. I hope that we will get many response from all those who think that hair oiling is our culture and tradition and this should be maintained.
I hope to read you soon people.
Thank you,
Namratha

ReplyDeleteNamratha
HI ,
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS KUMKUM FROM DELHI , I HATE OILING BUT MY HUSBAND LIKE OILED HAIR SO EVERY HE USE TO OIL MY HAIR WITH COCONUT OIL DEEPLY HE USE TO PUT LOTS OF OIL IN MY HAIR SPECIALLY IN LAST MOMENT OF OILING HE USE TO PUT A LOT OF OIL IN MY MID HAIR AND START MAKING CHP-CHP SOUND AND AFTER THAT HE RELAXES.CAN ANY ONE SAY HOW I CAN COME OUT FROM THIS PROBLEAM.
Hi Kumkum, thank you for your message. I am happy to see that at least some people are still checking the blog. Can you tell me why you hate oiling? Oiling hair has so many benefits you know. When you say lots of oil, how much is it? Does he make your hair completely wet? I guess so, because I also oil a lot and until it's chap chap, I will keep on applying. I do this to my daughters and my mother in law. And she does the same if not more. Try to see it differently, doesn't oil make your hair look good? How long is your hair? I am sure that many of us would like to know in details about your daily oiling. So please, describe that for us. What does your mother in law say about all this? Do share with us. And thank you again for posting dear.

DeleteAsk your aunt and also explain her about the benefits of oiling hair
Deleteo everyone. I am jasmeet here. I am 21 years old and i had hair till my lower back. They grew so long because my grandmother had a rule that all women in the house must get their hair oiled and combed by her only. She will make us my mother heat up big katoris of parachute coconut oil and then we all have to sit one in front of her one by one. She will divide hair in two parts and tie two pony tails first. Then one part she will open and we have to turn on the side and again she will divide hair in two parts. then she will take little oil in her palms and start rubing hot oil in our scalp, like this slowly slowly she wil finish one half of the head. then she will start nit killing even though we dont have nits in our hair. but once when she found some nits in my hair she slapped me hard and on every occassion then she will pull me by my chotis and make me sit for nit combing. then after nit combing she makes me look a little up in the sky to collect all half side hair and then she push my head on one side, then she ties a very tight choti till the end with a ribbon and inside rolls it to tie it to the top part of the choti. In the mean while she asks my mother to heat the oil again because it has cooled down. Then before starting the other half of the head, she puts hot oil in my ears also and pushes the buds to push the oil deep inside, then she puts more oil in my ears and packs it with cotton. the i have to change the side again and this time same routine will start with other section of head. Then again she will put oil, do nit killiing, nits combing, plaiting, and plait them in a very tight choti. If during this time i say anything or if i deny and say daadi please put less oil for today, then she will put more oil. after she finishes doing two tight plaits, then again oil should be heated and put in my other ears. after that she will make me put my head in her lap and she will remove the cotton from the first ear and she will star cleaning it with speacial ear cleaning needle. this hurts a lot, but if i scream then she puts some burning medicine in the ear. so it is better to just keep quiet. like this she does in the other ears also. this same routine has to be followed by my mother and aunty also. Then at night its the turn of male members of our house. But they really enjoy it. they feel it relaxing. but after their turn then we have to again sit for heavy oiling sessions. this time she will just start putting oil from a little height right in the middle of the head. this feel good, then she will do chap chap for 100 counts, then she puts more oil in other parts of the head, finally after lot of thumping and pulling she again combs my hair into two plaits and then we can sleep. this routine went on for many years till school. but when i came in college then i refused to oil my hair, my mther and aunty punished me and my friends severely for doing fashion. even my friends have to come to my house with oiled hairs. otherwise my mother and aunty will do heavy oiling in their hiars, But one of my friwnds mothers was surprised how she came home with two chotis, then my friend told her that it was a rule in my house to have every on with heavily oiled hair only because it was good for us. She called up my mother and thanked her for being so strict with her daughter, because she never oiled her hair in her house. Then my grandmother adviced her to punish my friend with canning and hairpulling if she didnt get her hair oiled properly. If she didnt listen to her, then she should bring her to my house and my granny will handle her properly. One day she came to my house with short haircut and what a scolding she got from everyone. I decided never to cut my hair when i saw how they reacted to her haircut. She was not spared and my granny tied two ponies with heavily oiling. Her mother was happy again, becuase she had gone against her mothers wishes to cut her hair short.
ReplyDeleteeven my granny did almost same thing with me except putting oil in ears
Deletehi Namratha and all the people i am gehna shah and i hate heavy hair oiling everyday but my grandmother loves it. till i was in india in junior college my daadi used to heat up dabur amla hair oil (i like that oil and its fragrance) and it was abt 200 ml oil on my hair everyday. daadi was really srtict with me because i always didnt like it so she purpously kept it more then others on my hair . and once when she had gone to my village i didnt oil my hair for 2 weeks and had a haircut .the stylist had told me not to put oil and i did not (because daadi was going to come aft a month) but she came aft 2 weeks and punished me.she kept almost a full bottle of dabur amla on my hair and me hair became as before and took my phone and didnt allow me to wash my hair at all!!!! aft that everything was worse for me.she used to pour oil on my hair for 5 secs (a lot) and then made the naoise of chap chap chap.... till that i felt little good.and now i m married and unluckily my daadi also even told my mother in law abt her strictness of oil towards me and soo my mother in law also even did that and even today all the time dabur amla hair oil is dripping all over my dress.and on my marriage too my daadi refused any hairstyles for me and kept the double amt of oil then everyday and my best friends dhriti sanskruti apeksha and chahat had to put oil like i had to put forcefully by my daadi and she did same thing with thier mother as she told to my mother in law ,everyday i had to go everywhere with 2 vry vry vry tight plaits with a strit division line in center.but now i love oiling my hair everyday and have hair longer then my hight
ReplyDeleteDear Gehna, thank you for posting in the blog. Again my apologies for not replying in due time. Your feedback says it all. At first we do not realize the benefits of hair oiling and this makes us look old fashioned as some would say. But I believe in the end you saw the results on your hair and you even started liking that. That's so nice to hear. I hope you will also pass this on later to your children and friends. You can continue posting in the blog dear. I will try to reply at soonest now.
DeleteThank you,
Namratha
Hi everyone, I am back finally! My husband helped me to reset everything and I can now log in again! :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope all my oiling friends are still here and more than ever ready to rock this blog again. At some times, I felt really sad that no one was posting and sharing their hair oiling sessions and experiences! I've got so much to say but I hope you also guys do keep this blog lively now.
I will try to reply and comment daily too... Happy oiling again!
I have also seen your invites on Google + ... this is new to me but I accepted your invites. Happy to see that some really dear friends are always here! I hope we can make this blog lively again. I am feeling so happy today :)
DeleteHi guys, I have tried posting this morning but it did not appear here! Anyway, I hope you had a nice day! Nothing better than a nice champi after a nice tiring day at work or school. When my daughters come back from school, they refresh, have tea, shower and then change. The next thing I will do is to let their hair loose and comb them straight. I will apply little oil only while combing. Since their hair are braided the whole day and remains heavily oiled, then I comb their hair, it looks so nice with the braid curves. My hair is heavily oiled as usual in a bun. Once we finish dinner, we all be watching and will enjoy a good oiling together. Nightly oiling will be very heavy for sure.
ReplyDeleteI hope you also contribute about your routines, your oiling sessions and experiences and anything related to oiling.
I hope to see many many posts friends :)
Wishing all of you a sweet Happy Diwali... May your life be filled with joy and success! I hope you did not forget the traditional oil bath! Please share and let us know.
ReplyDeleteDear friends, my husband has helped me to create a Facebook account. I hope with the Facebook account I can get in touch with more people who think that hair oiling is part of our culture and should be maintained at all cost. You can find me on Facebook now.
ReplyDeleteGreat effort Namratha....all the very best to both of u.....(Sobhan Kumar)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sobhan Kumar, thank you for your encouragement. Unfortunately there are not many posts. I hope you can contribute also.
ReplyDeleteKudos and accolades to you Namratha for this stupendous effort. I wish you bring all oiled hair lovers like me under the same umbrella here. Continue in right spirit and earnest.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your sweet comment and encouragement Dro C... I hope that this blog becomes lively with all those who believe hair oiling is our culture and should be promoted. Please feel free to post anything.
ReplyDeleteHello, I really enjoyed reading the blog! I am from Minnesota and I am 37 I only learned about oiling less than a year ago. I am enjoying my quiet Saterday with my hair heavily oiled with olive and coconut oil. It is so interesting to learn about the tradition of hair oiling and its benefits. I have seen such a change in my hair, it is shiny and healthy for the first time in my life and I am loving it. I have also noticed a lot of new hairs growing all over and my hair is growing longer and not breaking and getting split ends.
ReplyDeleteHi I entered the last post and although I am so exited about oiling I am concerned also when girls are forced to oil and even slapped and beaten. I think the resistance is because of being forced. Oiling is very enjoyable and I love that mothers daughters and aunties get to share this very nice time together on a regular basis. Indian hair is the ideal hair but nothing should be forced, don't you think they will chose it when hair becomes dry and brittle on there own without being forced.
ReplyDeleteDear Blogger (Anonymous), thank you for your sweet message. I am happy that you learned about oiling, better late than never. Olive and coconut oils are very good for hair growth. In India, hair oiling has been always part of our culture as we all know the benefits it has on hair. You have seen for yourself and we are happy to have you in our 'oiled hair force'. You have stated all the benefits and I think you have experienced it rather.
ReplyDeleteI also agree so much with you about forced oiling and beating. You are right to say that resistance is because of forcing. However, I believe that a child should be 'forced' in some way. I did narrate about how before my daughters (the elder one) did not like oiling. So sometimes, I had to force her. But I am against beating. So I did talk to her and explained all the benefits. Then little by little, she herself realized how beautiful her hair was and finally she accepted and now loves oiling. As you said, oiling is really enjoyable. It's a special bond between mothers and daughters, sisters, cousins and relatives.
However, in today's world, girls will prefer using all sorts of chemicals to treat their already dry and dull hair. And when it gets worst, they will simply cut it short and keep on using chemicals. That's the reason why long hair is so rare now. But I believe that with proper guidance and collaboration between us all, we can promote hair oiling to a higher level.
I am happy you posted in the blog. It would be nice if you could give us your name so that it is easier to communicate.
Thank you so much,
Namratha
Hi Namratha,
ReplyDeleteThank you for responding. My name is Evie. I agree with you that children need to be taught at an early age what they should do so that when they are old they will still do it. I am so sad that a lot of girls are choosing to put chemicals on there hair and as a result will have to cut their hair. I read an entry here about a man who said that oiling enhanced his religious experience, what is the significance of hair oiling in the spiritual life?
Hello Evie,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all my apologies in not getting back to you earlier. You know, with kids being at home for school holidays, I do not have much time left. Kids take up so much of your time :)
You asked an interesting question. In fact, in India, there are religions that prohibits hair cutting (Sikhism). Yoga, is also another facet that gives a lot importance to hair. All these contribute to the well being of the individual.
According to the yogic tradition, hair is a wonderful gift of the nature, that helps to raise the Kundalini energy, which is the force that increases the energy, tranquility and intuition. Because, when you let your hair grow fully and coil it on the crown of the head, the "Pranic Energy" or "Life Force" flows down from the top of the head to the base of the Spine.
Now, when it comes to oiling, it is always advised to oil the hair heavily so that the hair and scalp absorbs maximum of the oil. This help to keep the head cool, refresh the eyes and the mental state of the individual. In ancient times, hair oiling was something practiced daily.
The importance of hair oiling can also be seen in Ayurveda - natural healing science from India. Most of the treatments require oils, for both hair and body. The Shirodhara for example, consists of allowing oil to flow on the forehead (between the eyes) and this gives full relaxation and rejuvenation of both the physical and mental state.
These are things that have been passed by our ancestors and thus it forms part of our culture. I see many non-Indian people who also oil their hair now due to the several benefits it brings. Unfortunately, with westernization, young girls and women tend to follow fashion and use lots of chemicals as you said.
I hope I have answered your questions. I am not an expert in this, but I just know how beneficial heavy hair oiling is for an individual. That is why I make it a must to have my hair heavily oiled daily, and the same for my kids as well.
Thank you for posting in my blog and I hope to read more from you soon.
Namratha
Hi..I am not sure whether I have to be a member on here to post. Just wanted to add my two cents.
ReplyDeleteYes, hair oiling is part of ancient Indian tradition..and it is still being followed exactly the same way by people who uphold their Indian tradition no matter where they are.
Heavy hair oiling is basically an important concept in Ayurveda because it promotes overall health & wellness by cooling the scalp and nourishing the hair and body whole through vitamin E and other nutrients the oil provides.
When you pour oil in the middle of your forehead during Shirodhara, it activates your third eye's powers.
Therefore, heavy and consistent hair oiling not only has benefits for hair growth, beauty, and overall health and well-being, but it does increase your spiritual awareness.
Thank you..

Hi Krishna, thank you for your comment. Ayurveda has proved itself for centuries and in today's world, we can see how important these natural therapies are. You so rightly said about all the benefits of hair oiling. But as I always say, this is getting lost nowadays so we need to promote it within our families and friends. You need to first believe in it so that you can see the benefits.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting Krishna. You do not need to be a member to post. Please do contribute as much as you want on the blog dear. It is a blog open to everyone and I will try to control what is posted as much as I can.
Thank you,
Namratha
Hi Namratha,
ReplyDeleteI think the way to promote it is to set an example ourselves of these therapies..and allow others around us to visibly see the difference. When they will see for themselves, they will understand why natural therapies have been used since ancient times, in this case heavy hair oiling. We should stop using anything chemical based, even hair cleansers or shampoos..and when they see the luster in our hair..they will also follow along. It's never good to just follow along with society when you can use your own mind , and when you especially know what is right and what is not.
Another thing I would like to add is, if more and more people promote their hair oiling in public places (i.e. leaving the oil in the hair while stepping outside, working, or going to school)...it will really set a great example.
Thank you and regards.
I want to add that, as much as we need to adapt to society..that is all part of these expectations we start imagining. We don't need to necessarily adapt to everything in society. There are a ton of people still living the ways of the ancient ayurvedic times..I will get into that a little later if someone asks but...who says that one cannot go outside this way and even shopping, at work, or at school? it is not something prohibited. It is our culture and tradition.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Thank you so much for your comments Krishna. I am happy to see that I am not alone in this endeavor. I think society 'says' it is bad (or not fashionable) to go out with oiled hair if that's what you mean. If you read my posts, even I faced some difficulties with my elder daughter. But I had to been strict and hard to make her understand. And finally she did and now she is happy with that.
ReplyDeleteI believe parents should be able to bring up their children in a good way. Do it in a way that your kids are happy and disciplined instead of just doing something to please the society and in the end you see your kids taking the wrong paths in life.
I fully agree to what you said Krishna. Let's hope people will read, comment and adopt these same healthy lifestyles that were followed by our parents, grand parents and ancestors.
Namratha
You are not alone in this, definitely not. And yes, no need to listen to society if they don't understand the significance of oiling our hair , our children's hair, and so forth. we value this treasure and will continue to do so.
ReplyDeleteRecently , I 've come across people telling me their schools do not allow for children to have extra oil in their hair, however, I found out it's not really a rule per say, it is just they feel it looks rather odd. That is when the parent's job comes into play that this is our ancient tradition, and we are simply upholding it and instilling these values into our children.
For example, I went to school with oiled hair since Pre-K (before Kindergarten, and throughout grade school into college). Of course, the kids would tease and say what is that grease on top of your hair and why is your face, neck and hands shiny..etc. You need to teach your kids to ignore those comments, and go about their lives. Besides, when children go to school, I recommend if you will be heavily applying oil, let it be only coconut for the sake of the smell. Sometimes (although I don't agree with this), parents applying heavily Indian-fragrance based oils such as Amla , Brahmi, or other similar oils have their kids complaining that the smell is unbearable for the kids and teacher at school. Trust me, I've been there.
I admit I went to school with my hair heavily coated with Amla Oil ONLY..and it was not the greatest experience..whereas a simple coconut oil heavy coating makes a big difference.
Thank you
May I also add that we should teach our children to proudly talk about their hair oiling tradition with their classmates rather than remain quiet and let others make fun of them. Explaining things sometimes makes all the difference. All the oil running down their face from the hair is actually soothing their eyes and moisturizing their skin..so it is like double the benefits.
ReplyDeleteAre there any viewers online currently that are open to a meaningful hair oiling discussion? I am willing to even become one of the main moderator's of this blog to answer any questions and give my input, because although I don't live in India right now, I consider myself from the village at heart while living in US . I love to maintain the same lifestyle as in an Indian village. Therefore, if anyone has any questions/advise needed/ different perspective needed, feel free to ask!
ReplyDeleteDear Krishna, I am so happy to be reading your posts on the blog. Please feel free to post as much as you want. You are really an example as a young girl, hats off to you. Today, while oiling my daughters hair, I was telling them about how you love oiling your hair too even though you are in the US.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should follow our traditions and customs always dear. I try to stick to these values as much as I can. Hair oiling has always been an important part of our life and it will be so always as my daughters know and realize the importance of hair oiling.
I always keep their hair heavily oiled, even for schools. However, I cannot make them go to school with oily face or neck. They are young and they need to have friends. We are in a foreign country and you know how hard others might be towards us. So they need to adapt and fit in. I believe, we must find the balance. I oil my daughters hair heavily, but not to the point where it will be dripping or spoiling their uniforms. Even then, in the beginning some of their friends were teasing them. The friends are not to be blamed. It's not their culture and they cannot understand that. So I talked to my girls and explained them and with time this stopped.
I remember that when my eldest daughter had an outing at school, that day I had oiled her hair heavily but made a ponytail only. She had let her hair loose and all her friends were jealous of her long, black and healthy hair. When she told me that on reaching home, I explained that its due to the heavy oiling. She realized that and now whenever someone teases her, she will simply say that oiling helps hair to grow and be healthy.
As I always say, everything in life is good when it is in balance. At home, it's another story. Now they are in school holidays, I will oil their hair completely and even till dripping. They know that this is only beneficial to them and they will ask to oil their hair more often. Once the eldest has asked, the little one will also want the same. So in some way, I believe I have been successful in promoting these values.
Just one hour back, my MIL asked to comb my hair. My hair were already heavily oiled and neatly braided. I went to her and sat down and I got a really nice massage. She will always use so much oil but I will never complain. I rather see her care and affection than anything else. In so doing, I am also setting up the example for my kids.
Krishna, you have brought a new life to this blog and I hope that soon many people like you will join and contribute. Remember, this is your blog. We are all equal so anyone can post and comment.
Happy oiling to you all
Namratha
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteWhile waiting for my husband to be back from work, I have decided to share a bit about the benefits of oiling. This is my personal knowledge and are things that I learned from my parents and grand parents. I just want to share that with you, but any comments and improvements are welcomed.
In the Indian tradition, a woman’s hair is considered to be her crowning glory. Women have historically been been identified with long, thick luscious locks that cascade down to their waist. Hair is associated with strength and beauty.
in India, oiling your hair and scalp heavily is very common. Many people naturally associate the application of oil with ‘being greasy.’ Nothing could be more untrue. Hair treatments using oil provide deep conditioning and help cleanse micro dust particles that cause dandruff, irritation, infections and hair loss. Also, applying oil to the scalp promotes relaxation, a process which in itself is extremely important for think, healthy hair.
Most Indians use coconut oil as it has a cooling effect on the head. Releasing heat is essential for maintaining the beauty of the hair as it weakens the roots. There are many commercial varieties of coconut oil available in the market but it is a good idea to identify a pure organic product as chemicals and preservatives invariably alter the cooling quality of coconut oil. Pure coconut oil usually does not have any fragrance and solidifies easily.
The process is not too difficult. Saturate your scalp, hair and hair length with coconut oil and massage your head. Once your hair is drenched with oil, you can comb your hair. Always use a wide-tooth comb or singly use your fingers to remove tangles. Leave the oil in for at least 2-3 hours or better is to leave it overnight. Wash your hair out, making sure that you do not completely remove all the oil. Applying too much shampoo will eliminate the natural oils produced by the scalp as well. Then you can proceed with drying your hair and here also I would advice not to use hair dryer but rather just towel and sunlight if possible. If you need to use a hair dryer, make sure to keep a good distance between your hair/scalp and the dryer. Once your hair is damp, I personally recommend to apply some more oil to seal the moisture and keep the hair soft and shiny. Then sit back and admire your beautifully conditioned, shiny locks that are vibrant with moisture and health!
I will soon be oiling my daughters' hair (and their friends' hair as well - 3 of them are staying with us for a few days for school holidays). Once I finish that, I will put them to bed and will do my own oiling.
Happy oiling to you all,
Namratha
Hi Namratha and Krishna this is Evie. I enjoyed reading the recent posts. Thank you for the information. I do notice the cooling effect of the coconut oil and it did make me feel rejuvenated and happy. At first when I started oiling I didn't want anyone to know because it is so uncommon in the U.S. But I am becoming less shy about it I wear it oiled in a bun or braid all day long some days and my family and friends don't say anything bad about it. My sister is going to begin oiling her hair too.
ReplyDeleteHi I live in Mumbai and I'm a Sikh. I am in 9th grade! So every Sunday night there's oiling session in my house where my dadi oils hair of all the female members of our family. And I really hate oiling my hair! I always used to hate oiling my hair..its a compulsion and my dadi just drips oil into my hair and then I have to let her oil my hair. She ties two tight plaits for next day's school. And this happens every Sunday. It was my birthday on 7th December (Sunday). So even on that day she oiled my hair heavily. All my friends tease me when I enter the school with oiled hair.! And when my friends come over to my place to stay even they have to get their hair oiled from my dadi! Can you give me a solution to get rid of oiling ?
ReplyDeleteHey...u r lucky enough 2 get ur hair oiled!! I miss my dadi...! We almost had the same routine but it was more rigid than this! I used to get oil massage every night before going off to sleep...and my dadi used to tie tight plait and the plait used to remain the same till I get up next morning (it was that tight)
DeleteHi! I'm from New York but I'm an Indian....!! My mom oils my hair thoroughly before I go to schoo! Its a necessary thing in our house to oil our hair evert alternate day and we can wash it off only on a holiday! And I love getting my hair oiled from my mom and dadi!!My friends tease me and my sister hates getting her hair oiled ! But my grandmother slaps her if she doesn't get her hair oiled!!!She always cribs about getting her hair oiled....! We get heavy oiling every alternate night so that oil doesn't drip off when we are off to school!!I love it when my grandmother tied two tight plaits before sending me off to sleep.
ReplyDeleteHi Evie, thank you for posting again. Even I enjoy reading your posts dear. You are right about the cooling effect of coconut oil and the overall rejuvenation feeling. It is true that in other countries, hair oiling is not common or is considered unhygienic and hence many people will oil only at home. But once you realize all the benefits, you will not care about what others think because your hair is just loving it. We are happy that you initiated your sister into oiling too. You can now guide her about the oiling techniques. Evie, you can add me on facebook too. Just search for Namratha Rao with a profile picture of Indian flag. Keep it up Evie and happy oiling.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous guest, I believe that for you hair oiling is even more important. I cannot give you a solution to get rid of hair oiling. Your Dadi is a learned and experience person and she knows what is best for you. For me, it's quite simple. You have to choose between your Dadi, her oiling, the benefits of oiling for your hair or your friends, looking cool as my daughters say and dry, brittle hair. If you choose the second option, I would suggest you try to talk to your Dadi. Otherwise, just sit down and enjoy the massage you are getting dear. It's a treat. As the other guests said, it's always good to get one's hair oiled by an elder person. You have to change your mind set and perception and I am sure you will see things differently. I would suggest you leave your name next time you post so that it is easier to reply to you. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteDear anonymous guests (replying to the next 2 posts). Thank you for sharing your views on hair oiling. I agree that it is always nice to get a good oiling and massage. I enjoy the oiling and massage from my mother in law. There is a huge different when oiling one's hair and someone else oiling your hair. My mother in law always uses much more oil than I do. But still, whenever she massages my hair, I feel so relaxed. You are lucky to be having your mom and Dadi oiling your hair. This shows how much they care for us. I would also request you to leave your name so that I can reply more easily to you :)
ReplyDeleteThank you
Hi Namratha responding to your reply My name is Sukhpreet. That is for the reply. And I'll let her oil my hair.
ReplyDeleteHey I'm Janvi here! I was in 6th grade and my mom used to oil my hair forcefully and I used to cry over it.But as I grew up I saw my age people with whitr hair! And now I'm in college and my mom oil's my hair every alternate day before going to the college! I love your blog.Waiting to see your story.Have a nice cooling day.Now I'm going to get my hair oiled by my mom.She will as usual oil my hair heavily :) And now I enjoy it! I don't crib about it anymore!!
ReplyDeleteHey this is Pooja here! I was in convent school and I remember being a fussy kid about oiled hair. In our school it was a compulsion to be in oiled hair and I never used to like it! My school was soo strict that if our hair weren't oiled they used to tell the miads to oil our hair and tie them into 2 plaits/ pony tails! I remember this day when I didn't let my mom apply oil to my hair and she just tied two plaits and I was up punished and the maid oiled my hair heavily in the school and then tied my hair. And after returning back,my mom was so happy to see me in oiled hair...! Now its been a year that I've passed school..even though I'm in college now I let my mom oil my hair heavily whenever she feels like ! And she always oils my hair just like school days and ties them into two tight plaits..! I ❤ your blog! It took me back to the worst punishment of my school days!!
ReplyDeleteI've got a sort of same story...! I was too in convent school! But I was never a fussy child about getting my hair oiled cause in my house it was a compulsion + in my school!! And in my school also all my friend used to be in oiled hair!! So it was this day when my mom was sick it was a Sunday and she usually used to oil my hair every sunday night, she used to oil it heavily and thus she she oiled my hair the whole week. My mom was sick so she couldn't oil my hair and she just tied two pony tails and when I entered the school during the assembly my few friends who didn't oil their hair used to cry for getting them oiled and I got them oiled happily..!!
DeleteKavita!
I love oiling my children's hair..! And they both love it tooo! My mother in law oils my hair and I oil my children's hair!its a generation oiling time!! In our house we usually oil each others hair in the morning after taking a shower! And my mother in law oils my hair heavily...! I feel lucky to get this message and getting my hair oiled even in London. Its a typical Indian head massage..! My younger daughter faced the same problem as your daughter..! But after telling her the importance and oiling her hair forcefully she's given upon ! So she sits calmly in front of me and I open her hair brush it properly and give her a sooting massage till she is completely all perfect!! Your blog is good..! I've seen such a blog for the first time! And I wanted to ask you for how long should we let the oil remain? I've heard that we shouldn't let it leave in our hair for more than 24 hours as it attracts dust...but is it true? I love keeping my hair oiled ! So do my children! We wash it only when we have to go out...! But just wanted to ask you :)
ReplyDeleteI would like to tell you about my oiling story...! I am in 10th grade and today it was sports day in our school..! So I got back home sometime back with a friend of mine who will stay in my house for 4 days..! When I'm tired my mom gives me a nice head massage! Now my friend is getting a nice head massage and I'm writing my oiling story here!! My friend hates getting her hair oiled ,she never let's her mom oil her hair....but my mom is strict so she can't deny her for oiling her hair!! Now I'm getting my hair oiled heavily so that oil stays in my hair for next 2 days cause after that my mom will again give us a nice champi because we have school on Monday ! So we will get a nice relaxing champi massage with oil tripping on Sunday night before going to bed...! This champi will go on for half an hour after which my mom will tie 2 plaits and then she will take us out for shopping...! In India it's a tradition of oiling your hair...so we won't feel awkward to go out in heavily oiled hair also..! My friend might but I won't! After giving me a head massage my maid will oil my mom's hair thoroughly and tie a tight plait...even my mom loves getting a head massage! In our house its a tradition or say a compulsion to get our hair oiled from our granny when she is here! And since my childhood days I've seen everyone getting their hair oiled by her so I don't find it bad to be in oiled hair...So whenever my friends come for a stay and when my granny is here she oils their hair and make them look neat! In our school to its a compulsion as I read in some other comment....! But the maids don't oil the student's hair..! The parents of those children are called in the school hours and they are suppose to get their hair oiled before leaving the school for that day! Its a compulsion in our school because oiled hair stick to each other and make us look neat ! And I've always enetered scho with oiled hair even if my friends tease me I get my hair oiled properly before leaving for school..! Now I've got better hair compared to all my other friends and even they oil their hair now!I've told these benefits to all my friends. My cousin from Dubai hates oiling her hair..! Because there in the schools its not a compulsion to enter the school with oiled hair..! But whenever she comes here for vacations she gets nice massage every alternate day! In my house my mom oils my hair properly till all my hair are wet with oil.And she does this on Sunday nights, Wednesday morning before going to the shcool and Friday nights are major heavy oiling nights!! Even my dad gets heavy oiling in the night when he comes back home before taking a shower! He has to be in oiled hair till monday morning!! Have oily weakeneds ahead
ReplyDeleteI remember my story of first getting my hair oiled. In my house luckily there's no such oiling compulsion as my mom has allergy with oil! So once my parents had gone out and I had to stay at a friend's house for 5 days! And my friend is a Punjabi! They can't cut their hair so to maintain their hair she gets her hair oiled every Sunday night so that her hair is oiled before going to the school! And her mom asked me to open my hair because she was going to give me a massage and I refused for the same ! So her mom just opened my hair from behind and poured a little oil and I got to know and then I had to let her oil my hair properly! But I should say its the most relaxing this g ever to get a massage! And I never tie plaits to school (though my hair is long enough)! And that day after oiling my hair properly her mom tied two plaits as well! And I entered the school in the same way! And my mom was so happy to see my in oiled hair as I never allowed my maid also to oil my hair! So now after that day in my house also its a compulsion to get our hair oiled on Sunday night! I am in 8th grade and I get my hair oiled very sunday night while watching television my maid massage my hair so nicely and she uses so much of oil and I love it! Because of me even my sister started liking it! It makes my hair soft whenever I wash it!
ReplyDeleteHi this is neetu here! I was going through some mental stress and I visited some doctors and all, the stress was because of my board exams! So that time my doctors asked me to get a proper head massage with coconut oil as it cools down your mind and gives you relaxing effect!! So during my exams I had to get my hair oiled everyday with a nice relaxing massage so that my mind is not stressed and it really helped me to score 90% in my board exams! Now I love getting my hair oiled ! The therapist comes over to my house every morning to give me a nice stress buster exercise and ends it with nice oil head massage! They asked me to undergo for Shirodhara therapy twice a week! And I did that also! Your blog is interesting...!Now I'm waiting for tomorrow morning to get a nice head massage! Now the head massages are with excess oil and after a month it will be excess oil head massage only twice a week and oil has to be in my head for all the week even if I have to attend some function or something like that or some occasion! My mom ties a nice French plait on such ocassions but if I want to have a stress free life I'll have to have my head oiled throughout for at least a year! I used to feel awkward to go out in oiled hair on such occassions..! But now I don't feel bad or I don't feel yuck about going with oiled hair to some wedding also! Because it will help me and my hair to become better, though my hair is not heavily oiled but its oiled properly till the time all my hairs are wet with oil I thank your blog because I can share my feelings of being oiled always! I shall make sure that your blog continues!!
ReplyDeleteAs a child I always allowed my mom to oil my hair! But as I grew up I became fussy because no one of my friends used to oil their hair! But my grandmother was very strict !I have a real sister and she had to oil her hair before going to the school ! So e rrytime there was oiling sessions. I was forcefully asked to sit down on the floor and get a massage done by my grand mom and she used to make my hair as a champu...!I used to hate it! But now when I look back to those days when she didn't allow me to use hair gel instead oiled my hair whenever I insisted for hair gel ! Slapped me if I troubled her for not letting her oil my hair, oiling my hair in excess the days I asked not to oil it in excess I thank her almost evrryday! My friends have white hair because of application of hair gel! And I have proper black hair!!!

Dear Sukhpreet, Pooja, Janvi, Neetu & Yash (and others who posted but who didn't leave a name), thank you so much for posting in the forum. Indeed, we can see that many people tend to hate oiling in the beginning... but with time, they realize the benefits and the positive sides. Our elders are much more knowledgeable than us on these issues. In their times, it was heavy oiling daily and they know and experience the numerous benefits of oiling. Hence, it is important to take up this habit of oiling the hair and we should encourage others to adopt the same. I hope we can keep up this momentum and more and more people share their experiences. Do tell us about routines that you follow so that we can share some nice tips and discuss about any questions you might be having.
ReplyDeleteThank you all and happy oiling to you all
Namratha
I am the only child in my house! And my grand mother stays with us! I am in 7th standard IB board ! IB board has too much to study! And my grandmother oils my mother's hair in the morning before she starts with her daily chores...but I hate getting my hair oiled! And I'm the only child and a girl! So my grandmother oils my hair forcefully! She makes me sit down on the floor and if I don't sit she oils my hair when I'm sleeping! So i prefer getting it oiled when I'm awake rather than getting a heart attack of getting oiled hair when I'm awake! So she oils my hair with hot coconut oil ! I have thick hair so she oils it properly with almost oil dripping..! And then ties them into two plaits....we have to get all this done on Saturday morning! And I can wash my hair only in Wednesdays but get them oiled again on Wednesday night because of school!Till few days I used to hate being oiled always! But after knowing about the hairfall problems and all ,I don't even wash my hair on Wednesdays and I ask her to massage it with oil everyday and now I enjoy it! So she oils my hair every morning before I go to the school!!!waiting for your story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWrite your oiling story...!!!!
ReplyDeleteis namrata here??
ReplyDeleteI want to ask you something....
Hi Nirmala, yes I am still here! I apologize to all of you as I was out of town and did not have easy access to the internet. But now I am back and our routine starts again! The kids will be back to school as from next week so I made sure to keep their hair heavily oiled every single day. Just before coming online, I have given them a heavy oiling with lots and lots of coconut oil. I tapped and massaged their hair well and did a loose braid. We are only ladies at home right now as my husband has gone to work and all ladies are with oil dripping hair (MIL, 2 daughters and myself). Wish you all happy oiling and a belated happy new year 2015.
ReplyDeletehii frnds....im very obsessed with hair oiling....i want to oil girls/women hair...i dnt knw how to control dis...any1 pls help me..
ReplyDeleteHello Namratha, I came across your blog while searching for oiling for dandruff. I am a 22 male living in west Bengal. I have shoulder length hair. I usually leave my hair open, and only sometimes tie it with rubber band. I live with my parents and we have two maids who work in the house. Both the maid have very long hair up to ankles and it is always well oiled. They usually oil their hair in afternoon in our backyard. Recently I am suffering from dandruff. I scratch my hair a lot. Yesterday during breakfast one of my maid saw me stratching and she commented that my hair might have lice/dandruff and she came over and ran her finger through my hair. She said it is very rough and she want to put nariyal tel in my hair. She later spoke to my mother, and she suggested that they can oil my hair very heavily in afternoon during their oil session. My mother agreed with her. Please advise me whether nariyal tel(coconut oil) will rid of dandruff. I have not oiled my hair for a very long time. The maids want to oil my hair in the afternoon but I am not sure about it. Please advise me
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hello Raj, thank you for posting in the blog. Right after reading your post, I can relate the heavy oilings of your maid to their long hair, which I believe must be thick and silky. Your maids are right about applying coconut oil for your hair and for dandruff. However, I would also advise to mix lemon juice with the coconut oil and apply. Simply pour the oil in a container and press a lemon and mix it together. Then apply it and keep it overnight. The next day, wash your hair and oil it again. It is important to wash your hair every 2 or 3 days so as to remove dust and sweat that accumulate in the oil. Please try it as often as possible and let me know if this works. Can you also share the routine of your maids? Ankle length hair is so rare nowadays.
ReplyDeleteHello Namratha, thank you for an encouraging and positive reply. After reading your post I went and spoke to my mother and she said to get my hair oiled from Friday for three straight days. She called the maids and told them of the plan. The maids agreed to it and assured my mom they will oil my hair very heavily and get rid of nit/dandruff. My mother said to listen to my maids and not interfere, I agreed. As you requested to know about my maids hair oiling session, I went to the courtyard in the afternoon. They both opened their huge bun and let the hair fall, then the hair would be bought to one side in the front and combed . After sufficent combing, one make would sit on the ground and the other on a higher stool and oiling would start. Oil would be poured straight from the bottle on the head and nicely tapped. Afterwards the scalp would be massaged strongly. More oil would be poured to other parts of hair and nicely massaged. The same ritual would be applied to the other maid. Once oiling is done they would stand and again comb each other hair. Both their hair is very thick. Then a very big and tight bun is tied. Both had huge shiny buns. Then little bit of oil is applied on the buns. After they finished, they saw me and commented very soon my hair would be looking like their, I just smiled. I hope I explained their ritual clearly. They use shalimar coconut oil. Have you ever used it?. Would you like to know about my hair oiling session? P!ease reply soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Hi Raj, I am happy that my post have been helpful. I would also like to thank you for sharing the oiling routine of your maids here. Can you tell me whether they oil till dripping? Or only very heavily? Your own hair oiling by them is most welcomed as well. I believe we are all waiting for your posts.
ReplyDeleteHello Namratha, the maids oil their hair very heavily mostly. On certain days I have noticed their hair more wet with oil. I will ask them them to be sure. Writing right now my own hair is very very heavily oiled. On Friday morning my mother inquired with the maids if they needed anything, they said they had to buy coconut oil, nit comb, regular comb and castor oil. My mom gave them money to buy what they needed. After lunch the maids told me to be ready as they were going to oil my hair after they did theirs. I was in my room when one of the maids walked and said it was time. She had her long hair open which was oiled very heavily. I followed her to the court yard and she told me to sit down on the ground and she sat on a stool. By then the other maid walked in with a bowl of warm coconut oil and a bottle of coconut oil in the other hand. Both of them sat behind me. First they took a comb and brushed my shoulder length hair. Then they parted my hair from the middle and poured a whole bowl of oil in the middle. The oil dripped on my face and back. I was told not to wipe it. After the oil was poured, they tapped the oil on my scalp. After some time they started looking for lice. This took a long time and then they combed my hair again poured more oil. By now my mom came and inquired about my hair. They said there is no lice only dandruff, she said do whatever to get rid of it. The maids said not to worry. Now the maids were thoroughly oiling my hair. After some time one of the maids went and warmed some more coconut oil, after she came she mixed some castor oil in it. I was like there is already too much oil on my hair. They said there is nothing like too much oil and bent my head and pored more oil. Hair became sticky due to castor oil. Again hair was massaged and combed. After like half an hour they tied my hair In tight plait. Then one of the maids sat in front of me and massaged the oil on my face and hands. After some time both of them tied their hair into buns and took more oil and taped it on my head. They said again at night they will comb and oil my hair. I hope you liked my oiling session. Do you think so much oil is okay ?. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks. Reply soon
ReplyDeleteHi Raj, thank you for your post. I really enjoyed reading it and you narrated it so well. I hope to get more posts like this from you. Did you try to add lemon juice to the coconut oil? It will be very helpful against dandruff. Maybe you can ask the maids and they might know about it. From what I understood, they oiled your hair so heavily that it was dripping. But their own hair was only heavily oiled, without any dripping? Did you ask them why they do not apply more oil on their hair to make it dripping? Do you oil their hair?
ReplyDeleteHi Namratha, nice to hear from you. I am glad you liked my story. Yes lime juice was applied to my hair with coconut oil. My mom had suggested that idea too. After three days of heavy oiling my hair is finally dandruff free. I am happy with the results and thanked the maids. The maids suggested not to stop oiling my hair and that regular oiling should be done. Please advise Namratha on this issue. Any suggestion would be useful. On the last night of oiling when the maids were oiling and combing my hair, I asked them how they don't oil their till dripping. They said they do oil their hair till dripping on certain days when they meet up with their group of friends for an oiling session. They said they all sit together and oil their hair till dripping and then tie long braids with flowers in them. One of the maids then suggested that next time I should come with them since I am so interested. Please advise what do you think. If I go I am very sure my hair will be dripping with oil since it is a group of ladies and I would be forced to oil my hair. I have never combed both my maids hair. Please reply soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi again Raj, and thanks for posting again. Happy to learn that you applied lime juice and that you are no more facing problems with dandruff. You should apply it continuously, maybe 3-4 times per week as the maid suggested. I would personally advise to keep 3 days for washing your hair. Let's say you wash today (Sunday) in the evening. Sunday night you can oil your hair again. Then Monday you oil again. Then you wash on Tuesday and keep on the routine. As from Friday, you keep your hair heavily oiled and to be washed by Sunday evening. My routine is more or less like that, but I oil heavily always been a housewife.
ReplyDeleteThank you for asking about the routine of the maids as well. It is always interesting to know the routine of others and try to get the best from that. Can you please try to get details about their routine? How often they oil? When they will oil till dripping? What oil they use? When they wash and how often in a week? Maybe it would be a good idea to accompany them next time. There is nothing wrong to get your hair oiled till dripping dear. My daughters, MIL and myself have been like that all day long today. I will wash my kids' hair in around 3 hours.
Actually, this group oiling is something I miss so much. We cannot do it here unfortunately. But so many times, I've heard people from India saying that they all gather under a tree and start combing and oiling each other's hair and talking about everything and nothing :) I believe you can narrate such experiences to us when you accompany your maids.
I hope that other people who have such experiences can also share this special moments with us here.
Hope to see more people like Raj posting... Happy Sunday and happy oiling
Hey this is Priya here! My hair is very dry and my mom will oil my hair and won't allow me to wash my hair for 2-3 days so that my hair becomes little proper. Could you suggest me when should I oil my hair today night or tomorrow night? I never oil my hair but after reading these posts above I think I'll let my mom oil my hair heavily. I have long hair ,my hair comes till my hips but they are very dry so my mom will oil my hair and she has asked me not to wash them for few days....!
ReplyDeleteHi I am Priya again.! I was just sitting and watching my favorite show on TV and that's when my mom started oiling my hair. She just got done with oiling my hair and she tied two plaits for me! This reminds me of school days when on Sunday evenings getting your hair oiled was a compulsion. Now my mother is oiling my brother's hair who apparently loves to get his hair oiled..! Thanks for this blog..! My mother said she will oil my hair tomorrow afternoon also before I eat my lunch and then she will let me wash my hair on Wednesday so that it helps my hair to becomes strong and I have my exams till 11th so getting a head massage with oil makes you cool and you can study well too :)
ReplyDeleteHey Namrata can u pls tell me the steps to oil our hair? Even I want to oil my hair and keep them oiled for 3 days. So I'm planning to oil my hair today evening :)
ReplyDeleteHi Namratha, thanks for your quick and timely advise. On Sunday night I was watching tv, when one of the maids came and sat next to me. She opened her oily bun and started combing it, after some time combing she asked me to sit in front of her so she could comb my hair too. I said only if you oil it too.( your advise :) ). She was surprised by my comment and almost hugged me. She called the other maid to get a bottle of oil. First she combed my hair very nicely. Then she opened the bottle of oil and let the oil fall on my head. By now the other maid had joined us too and she was combing her hair next to me. The maid was gently massaging my head. I thought this would be a good time.to get answers for all your questions. I asked them about their oiling routine. They said they oil their everyday. On weekends more heavy oiling is done. They wash their hair three times a week.
ReplyDeleteBy now my hair was nicely oiled when the other maid took over to comb and oil my hair. She again took some more oil in her hands and rubbed it in my hair. I asked them about group oiling session, they said they meet up twice a month and they are six of them. All of them have ankle length hair and oil their hair regularly. I told them I would like to go next group oiling session. They were happy to hear it and jokingly said be careful as all the ladies would want to oil my hair. They use shalimar coconut oil for their hair. Same oil is applied on my hair too. Do you have any suggestions.?
I also asked them about a regular oiling routine for me. They suggested that I oil my hair every night and wash my hair four times a week. On weekends I would not wash my hair and have it heavily oiled. Please advise Namratha, if you have any inputs.
Today morning my maids told my mother about the group oiling session, she suggested as she will be away for the weekend as she has to go to a relative house why not have it in our house and use the courtyard. The maids were happy with idea.
I washed my hair today and looking forward to my oiling session tonight.
Please reply soon.
Thanks
Hi Kanika,
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting. It is already a good start that you want to oil your hair and keep them at least for 3 days. 3 days is the maximum number of days I advise to keep oiled hair. Oiled hair will attract dust and dirt more easily and hence it should be washed after 3 days. But if you are applying oil every day, then you can keep the oiled hair for longer as the new and clean oil will replace the older oil. The amount of oil will depend on you but heaviest is better as this will ensure that all the hair is coated in oil and the scalp is nourished as well. Do keep us updated as well about your oiling.
Thank you,
Namratha
Hello Raj,
ReplyDeleteAppreciate your posts in my blog. From what I understood, your maids do not keep their hair dripping with oil when they are at your place. Maybe, you can suggest them that all 3 of you keep their hair dripping with oil. What about your mom? It is much better if all of you people engage in this routine as this will encourage each and everyone and you can also help each other. I am happy you appreaciated the oiling and I believe your maids and mom were very happy too. I understood they always oil heavily, but you said during weekends they oil more? Will it be till dripping then? Because from what you posted, it seems they oil till dripping twice a month only? As I said in my earlier posts, washing the hair after 3 days is fine, but if you wish to keep your hair oiled always, then be sure to apply oil daily to replace the old oil.
Even I am jealous of your maids hair... ankle length is just so rare today. Growing hair longer is really hard and sometimes (depending on genetic factors), the hair won't grow longer. Even I try to grow my hair longer, but with age it is getting harder. Moreover, when you have gone through pregnancy, your hair is so badly affected. But still, I stick to my strict routine of daily heavy oiling and henna. Talking about henna, can you also ask your maids if they use it? Or any other products they use on their hair?
I think it will not be a problem if the other ladies want to oil their hair as well. You will be part of their group and they will oil each other. It is always so relaxing to get an oil massage from someone else. I always look forward for my MIL to oil my hair even if she will apply way too much oil on my hair. But her massage is just blissful. I personally believe that coconut oil is the best oil. I really do not know about the different makes, but pure coconut oil is the best. Pure coconut oil does not have any fragrance and is solid at room temperature. Of course, if you have to go to work or school, then scented coconut oil is quite good too.
What your maid suggested is 100% good. In other words, you will be oiling and washing on alternate days. And same to my routine, as from Friday, no washing until Monday. Weekend is the best time to oil heavily as you will not be having to go to work/school. The maids/friedns coming to your place for oiling will be your lucky day. As long as you show your appreciation for what they are doing, things will be going on so well dear. So maybe try to plan for a surprise for them as a token of your appreciation. For example, you can buy a big coconut oil bottle as a gift for them. I would also advise you to ask them to allow you to oil their hair. You will see, they will start guiding you on how to do it and you will soon be an expert in hair oiling.
As always, keep us updated about your oiling routines and sessions dear. I am eagerly following your posts now and thank you so much for that.
Namratha
Dear bloggers,
ReplyDeleteI thank you all for participating in the forum and posting your experiences/questions. I can see the blog is becoming lively a little. Let's all try to keep this blog as lively as possible. As I always say, this is your own blog. So do no hesitate to share anything. I admit that from time to time I take a long time to reply. But it is not easy being the mom of 2 growing daughters. So they take up a lot of time. I was once using facebook, but I really find it too dirty for me. Hence, I will be on facebook very rarely as from now.
However, I want to remain close to all of your people. Hence, I would suggest that you can add me on my gmail address. My gmail address is namratha1604@gmail.com. I can thus reply more quickly on gmail chat service but still, we need to keep our blog alive.
Hope to read you soon my dear friends,
Thank you for all,
Namratha
Hi Priya,
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting. Your mom is very right if you are suffering from dry hair. Your oiling routine will depend on your goals. What do you want to achieve with your hair? If you have really dry hair, I would suggest to oil your hair as often as you. Daily oiling is really good. And if you cannot keep the oil at school or work, then you can oil lightly for first 2 days and on the 3rd day you oil heavily. On the night of the 3rd day, apply maximum of oil and leave it overnight. Then wash it again next morning. But do not keep the hair completely dry. After washing, oil it lightly again and keep up this routine. If you really want to adopt a good hair oiling routine, then you can also oil your hair daily. As you said, when we were kids, it was compulsory to oil the hair daily and heavily and this of course had lots of benefits. It is rare that a boy prefer oiling than a girl, but congratulate your brother for that. I think your mom is right in deciding when to oil your hair. Just bear in mind that the most often and heaviest is better. I did post before that during exams times, oiling is more than important as it helps to keep the mind fresh and you can better concentrate on your exams. Do keep us updated about how it is going. I would strongly advise coconut oil.
Thank you,
Namratha
Hi, my routine is going amazing and I am liking it too! My mom oiled my hair again today because yesterday she oiled my hair lightly today she oiled it heavily and she has asked me to keep it oiled till Wednesday! And trust me, oiling does help you concentrate on your studies. I feel damn good after my mom massages my hair with oil!
ReplyDeleteHey pls write down the steps on how to oil our own hair..! I am an Indian studying in UK and I feel like oiling my hair but I don't know how to oil my own hair as my maid used to oil my hair when I was in school!
ReplyDeleteHi Priya, we are very happy to learn that you now like oiling... welcome to the club. I am sure that your mom must also be so happy to see this change dear. She is right about the oiling routine and keeping the oil up to tomorrow. In the meantime, if you feel the oil has been soaked up by the hair/scalp, you apply just top up by applying some more. I am sure that you will better concentrate on your studies. Can you give us details about your oiling Priya? Tell us how your mom oiled your hair and actually how much oil did she apply? What will be your next plans for oiling? What oil did you use? I am very happy that your opinion about oiling has changed and feel free to post anytime.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
Hi Lavina, thank you for posting. I was very happy that I read that you were studying in UK and yet you feel like oiling your hair. We Indians have been gifted with nice hair and we need to maintain and respect that. Very often in India, oiling was made my mothers, elder sisters or relatives or maids. This is so because these elderly people are knowledgeable about hair oiling. As I always say, in my case, my mother in law does the best oiling and massage. You wanted to know how to oil your hair, but as I said in one of my earlier posts, each type of hair requires a different type of oiling. Hence can you please give us more details about your hair and what actually you are aiming at? Are you oiling because of dry hair or to achieve length/volume. Generally, oiling is very easily done. I suggest oiling on dry hair (but some prefer on wet hair). Before oiling, the hair should be combed and free of tangles. I also prefer to pour the oil directly on the scalp and tap. I pour lots of oil on the head at different places and tap. Then I will massage the hair and scalp for some time. Afterwards, I may pour more oil directly or pour in the hands and apply. Once the head is oiled, I will then move to the length. In this case as well, you can either pour directly on the hair or pour in your hand first. Once you've coated the whole length, you massage it again. Then add more oil where it is less and specially the ends. Afterwards, you can comb your hair but make sure to use a wide-teeth comb. Then you can make a bun or braid depending on your choice. I hope I have answered your questions but if you need any more information, please feel to post on the blog. I hope like Priya, you join our club of hair oilers :)
ReplyDeleteNamratha
Hi Namratha thanks for your reply. Yes my mom and the maids were happy with my decision to have my hair oiled every day. My mom said this way it will be dandruff free and will grow longer. She even suggested to put sour curd in my hair before washing hair as it will ensure getting rid of dandruff. The maid oil their hair everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe only time they have their hair dripping with oil is during group oiling sessions. Weekends they just oil their hair more heavily.
On Monday night while oiling my hair I asked the maids if they use anything else beside coconut oil. They said they mix castor oil with coconut oil on weekends. I asked about henna, they replied no. I like their oiling now as they give a nice massage to the scalp which helps me sleep better.
Since I have no plans on Tuesday, my maids would oil my hair in the morning. So after breakfast I was in the courtyard when one of them came with a warm bowl of oil and asked me to sit in front of her. Her long oily hair was open and she had in front of her on one side. She combed my hair very nicely to get rid of tangles and then poured oil straight on my scalp. I thought of asking her if session comb her hair but felt shy.
I asked her about heavy oiling session between the three of us. She said wait till Saturday, by now the other maid joined us, her long hair open too. She took over my oiling and the other maid started combing her hair.
I asked both them as you suggested to get a gift for the group oiling session. They were happy with my though of gift. They suggested to get flowers for everybody as they would put it in their hair after oiling. I am worried that it will be too much oil in my head if all of them oil my hair.
After oiling my hair the maids said they will apply more oil at night and then apply sour curd in morning before washing my hair. Please suggest any ideas to talk to maids about heavy oiling as you had earlier suggested. Reply soon Namratha.
Thanks
Hello Raj, pleasure hearing from you and glad to note that the oiling sessions are going on fine. Yes sour curd is another way of treating dandruff, but I believe very few people like that. Hence lemon juice is more common. Can you describe the daily oiling of your maids (I want to know how much they oil daily). And can you also describe about the 'more heavily' oiling during weekends? I believe your maids are quite young in age and that's why they do not use henna/mehendi. Most people think that henna/mehendi is for hair coloring only. But did you know that henna is also a very good conditioner for hair? It really nourishes the hair and helps to make them thicker. The only disadvantage of henna is that it has a drying effect. But right after henna, hair should be washed with water only and then heavily oiled. This will make the hair look so much better and will give a reddish shade in sunlight. Maybe you can talk about this with your maids? For me, coconut oil remains the best 'base' oil and it mixes well with the others. During weekends, I usually mix coconut, sesame, olive and amla oil together. And you are very right to say that after a good massage, you sleep much better.
ReplyDeleteAfter your last post, I wanted to know whether you stay at home? Or are you a student? You also told me you had long hair? Do your maids keep their hair open all day long? How much did they oil your hair in the morning? Are you also oiling twice a day now (morning and night)? It seems that you are very eager for the group oiling session. You are really lucky as it is something I would like too. But being outside India, this is nearly impossible. But I am looking forward for your post about this so that I can feel this special moment too. Getting flowers is a very good idea but I would also suggest you bring a big bottle of coconut oil as a gift for them. There is nothing like too much oil as my mother in law always tell my daughters. The excess oil will drip down and will be massaged on the face and body. Oil is also very good for the skin.
I would also encourage you to ask them to allow you to oil their hair. I believe you can tell them that you want to learn the way they oil/massage hair so nicely. And you will practice by doing the same to them. I would be more than happy having someone oil and massage my hair daily. I hope this will help you. Hope to read you again soon dear.
Namratha
Hey Priya here! I am a student ( first year degree college ). So, on Sunday morning my mom just came up to me and informed me that she would oil my hair in the evening or on Monday morning. So she oiled my hair lightly on Sunday night. Lightly in the sense my hair was coated with oil but not excess oil , because we had guests coming in at our place and I'm very shy to go out in public with oiled hair. So to tackle that problem, she oiled her hair, my brother's hair ans my grandma's hair too! It felt like hair oiling day of the family. On Monday afternoon before sitting for my studies my mother ensured to oil my hair heavily with oil dripping because after that she gave me body massage as well with coconut oil only. My whole family got their hair oiled so that I don't feel shy in front of others. So that gave me confidence and just in one day I'm so used too hair oiling that after my mother gave me heavy oil massage on Monday afternoon I went for my classes on Monday evening. Though my friends made weired faces but this thing will help so why not do it? Looking at me even they'll learn in the same way :-) I have thick hair which comes till my chest. But the thing is my hair is very dry so that's why my mom has taken up this thing. She is strict about oiling my hair and doesn't it punctually. After the head massage she ties my hair in two braids as my hair is very thick, so I feel I'm back to school days! Your blog is too good :)
ReplyDeleteHi Namratha, thanks for your reply. I currently live home with my parents. I finished college and plan to start avdvanced courses later this year. I have shoulder length hair which I tie in a ponytail sometimes. Yesterday morning the maids oiled my hair lightly. I like to get my oil at night as I get good sleep. Last night while oiling my hair I asked them about henna. They said since it adds color to hair they don't use it. I asked about coconut oil and they agreed to it as a gift. They oiled my hair nicely, not too heavy. I am not eager for the group oiling session as you mentioned, just nervous. I guess they only oiled my hair heavily for dandruff removal. You advise would be helpful.
ReplyDeleteToday morning after breakfast one of the maids asked to to follow her to the courtyard where she would comb my hair. Her hair was open as usual. While combing my hair I asked her about keeping her hair open. She said the sunlight is good for hair so keep it open when outside and tie a loose or tight bun when working inside. Then she asked if I liked her hair open. By know the other maid came and untied her bun. She had a bowl of sour curd in her hand. It had a bad smell , I didn't want to put it but they forced me and added a bit oil and smeared it in my hair . After some time my hair was all looking white and sticky. They said to wash my hair in twenty mins.
As my mother is leaving on Friday, I have a lot of errands so might not be able to post. The maids will be staying with me Friday onwards in the house.
Thanks

Hi Raj, thank you for all the information and wish you all the best in your future studies. Glad that you are always sharing your oiling sessions with us. Henna does add shade to the hair but does not change the hair color actually, specially if applied on oiled hair. When you apply it on dry hair, it will then stain the hair and change its color. You should not be nervous for the group oiling dear. As I told you, there can never be too much oil and too much oil can only bring benefits. It is true that sunlight is good for the body and hair too. I try to dry my hair in sunlight as much as possible after washing. Doing a bun is a way to protect the hair while working as it is not exposed to dirt and dust and moreover, it will be less exposed to breakage. If ever the smell of the sour curd remains in the hair after washing, I would advise you to apply a scented oil right after washing. You can apply it lightly if you wish. I understand that you might be quite busy with your mom not around. Feel free to post whenever you wish.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
Hi Priya, thank you for your nice comment. Wish you all the best for your studies as well dear. I wanted to know, did your mom talk about hair oiling to you before? I believe it was like she was always after you for oiling but you might had been refusing right? I understand that the light oiling for you means that she will make your hair completey wet with oil but not to the dripping point. This will be heavy oiling for so many people. Usually, when people tell me they oil lightly, it will be a few drops of oil only in the hands and applying that all over the hair. The light oiling will not make the hair appear wet with oil. Your mom did a great job in oiling everyone's hair for you to feel at ease. I believe that your mom and grandma will be ok with the oiling, but what about your brother? From what I understand also is that on Monday afternoon, everyone got a heavy oiling (which means till oil dripping)... is that right? How did the others react to this? Did all of you including mom, grandma and brother had oil dripping hair on Monday afternoon? Can you also describe the oiling process that your mom used? I am very happy that you also took the courage to go out with heavily oiled hair. I believe by then your hair would not have been dripping with oil but it would surely look heavily oiled. What style did you wear then? What did your friends say? The best solution for dry hair is oiling of course. But I would also suggest you to try to change to a milder shampoo. From now on, stick to a strict oiling routine dear. You can talk to your mom and try to schedule a routine that fits both of you. Twin braids is a very common style after oiling. I do that to my daughters too. But the elder one seems to prefer a simple braid or bun as twin braids are more for school kids as you said. But the style is fine as long as the hair is coated with oil. The blog is good thanks to the contribution of each and everyone. As I always say, this is your own blog so you can post anytime and share anything. Contributions are always appreciated and its the only way to keep the blog interesting and active. I hope that more people will follow your steps and keep posting about their routine.
ReplyDeleteThank you and have a nice day,
Namratha
Hey Priya here! As I told you, my brother loves getting his hair oiled. But on Monday afternoon only my hair was heavily oiled till dripping because my hair is very dry! Okay so first my mom heated the oil and then she poured Max oil in the middle of my head she started speading the oil to the rest of the hair by massaging my hair in circular portion, after that she poured the oil on the length hair and the ends as they need more of oil. My mom did french braid for me when I went for classes. Today I washed my hair and it seems soooo nice. They've become very soft compared to before. After today's result my mom already scheduled a strict oiling session for me. She'll oil my hair every Sunday and Friday !
ReplyDeleteHi Priya, it is rare for boys to love oiling. Convey my appreciation to your brother as well. French braid looks so good with heavily oiled hair. I also do the same to my daughters when they go to school. Did you go to your classes with oil dripping hair? This would be a really big step for you to go out with oil dripping hair. You are right to say that after washing heavily oiled hair, the hair becomes so soft, silky and manageable. So you will get your hair oiled during weekends only. What about the week? I guess if you will oil on Friday, you can keep the oil until Sunday. Then instead of washing on Sunday, you can just apply more oil and then wash on Monday morning or night. I would suggest you to try to find an oiling session during the week as well. Wednesday would be good for another session dear.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
I didn't go with oil dripping hair but extra oiled hair! Which looked little creepy but now I'm getting used to this nice thing! So I really don't think what will others think about me, instead I'm trying to do that makes my hair beautiful! I'll surely Oil my hair on Wednesday as well ! This shall be for next week right? Because I washed my hair today only :-) Thanks for helping soo much! Really appreciate to what you are doing! Write your oiling story too! Yes, will surely tell him! He has little long hair and he has curly hair. Also, he has his own Rock Band so he want to make his hair little more long, so I suppose that's the reason why loves oiling his hair!
ReplyDeleteHello All. I am Vanita from Mumbai. I am 49 and works as secretary in office, Can you tell me if it is ok to go with oiled hair sometimes to office? and Will it suit my profile? Please suggest.
ReplyDeleteHi Priya, happy that you made such a big step of going to classes with very heavily oiled hair. You are right in saying that you don't care about what others think. When they will see how your hair is beautiful after some time, they will simply be jealous. That's what happened to my daughter too. It's good that you take up the habit of oiling on Wednesday too. You could have done it this Wednesday itself, but never mind if you will do it next week. Better late than never dear. You do not have to thank me dear, rather your mom. I should say thank you for contributing to the blog and showing to others that hair oiling is nothing bad or not trendy/fashionable. I will surely post about my oiling soon too! It's true that I also need to post about myself from time to time. You bro has adopted the right attitude for his hair. I am sure he will see the benefits soon too. Keep posting anytime dear.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Namratha
Hello Vanita, and welcome to the blog! Thank you for your first post dear. I do not see why it will not be ok to go to the office with oiled hair or even heavily oiled hair... and daily! Unless your office has strict rule, oiled hair rather shows professionalism rather than loose, colored or whatever style hair. As a secretary, you need to remain professional and a tight oiled bun is a perfect style for a secretary. You can also wear a braid from time to time, but for professional looks, I believe a bun is much better. I hope that my comment will help you.
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Namratha
Thanks for suggestions. As a secretary i have to meet many people daily. So what do you think better? Is it heavily oiled hair or normally oiled hair? Also i never tried oiled hair bun and after reading your comment i feel its good hair style for my profile. So i will try it. Thanks Namratha!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome Vanita. I personally believe that wearing your hair heavily oiled and in bun always will keep your professional style. Do keep us updated about your actual hair care routine also. Can you please post and let the other readers know also. I am happy that my comments were helpful.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
dear Namrata,
ReplyDeleteI too keep my hair oiled like you,but my mother in law always feels that i apply less oil in my hair....please advice....
Dear Swarnalata, thank you for posting and welcome to the blog. This is a common problem whereby elders find the quantity of oil is less. For example, daughter finds way too much oil, but mother finds it not enough. To better understand the situation, we would need details about your actual oiling. Can you please describe your actual oiling routine (how often and how much). We can then try to find out a solution that will suit both of you then. Hoping to hear from you soon.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
Dear Namrata, My Mother in law oils my hair very heavily...she uses around 40-50 ml each time....but after an hour my hair start looking like they are dry...and then she starts scolding me....
ReplyDeleteDear Swarnalata, I believe that your mother in law expects her daughter in law to be a typical Indian daughter, with long and heavily oiled hair. Long and heavily oiled hair is very important for elderly people. It shows a good wife and mother, as well as a disciplined home. When you say 40-50 ml, does that make your hair completely wet? Or does it make your hair look oiled/greasy only? How long is your hair by the way? The problem, from what I guess, is that you did not oil your hair in your younger days (before marriage). Hence, whenever your MIL will be apply oil, your scalp and hair will easily absorb all the oil and hence the amount on your hair will be reduced. What I always do to my daughters, is to place my palm on the middle of their head. If I can sense heat, it means that the hair, scalp and head needs more oil and I will apply more. Maybe you can ask your MIL to check the same and if she senses heat, ask her to apply a lot of oil and tap in the middle. Your MIL only wants your benefit and good health, so whenever she is oiling your hair, tell her to apply much more oil and make it chap chap. Tell her you like oiling your hair heavily. Instead of waiting for her to call you for oiling, at any times of the day, simply go to her with the oil bottle and ask her to oil your hair. I am sure she will be very happy with the change in attitude and your relationship will be much better. Do try my advice and let me know how it goes dear. Keep posting as we are eager to see how this situation goes.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
Hello everyone, I hope you are all keeping fine. First of all, I would like to thank all those people who are posting, contributing and making the blog lively again. Honestly, at some point, I wanted to stop everything due to non-response. But now, I am more than motivated to keep it going but I will request your help as well. Alone, I will not be able to do much.
ReplyDeleteFollowing the last posts, several of you have asked about my own hair oiling. So I will tell you about my day today. I usually wake up at 5:00 am as my husband leaves for work quite early. First thing, I take a shower (without washing my hair). Next, I will comb my hair and I will oil it. I will apply ample oil to make it wet again because the oil gets absorb overnight. If I am in a hurry (like today), I will simply make a messy updo. Otherwise I will comb and make a neat bun or braid. Once I finish oiling, I will do prayers and start preparing breakfast. By then my husband will have his breakfast and leave for work. My mother in law will also get up and will freshen up. She will have breakfast and she will call me for oiling her hair. I am always ready at that time with the same oil and comb. I will comb her hair first, then apply lots of coconut oil to make her hair completely wet and dripping. She always request me to oil very heavily. After oiling, I will comb her hair and make a bun and she will then help me in the kitchen. By then, my kids will be up and I will help them get ready for school. Once they are ready with their uniforms, they will have breakfast and right after breakfast, I will call them on the terrace for oiling. I will apply a good amount of oil on their hair, but nothing like dripping. Elder one will request single braid while for the youngest one, I will do twin braids.
Once they leave for school, mother in law and myself will start doing the household chores. Usually my mother in law will have a shower by 10.30 am and she will leave to do her own things. Today, by 10.00 am she left for the market and to do some errands. I will then continue the work until everything is clean. I will have my shower, and I will oil my hair again. So I went to the terrace, started by combing my hair, made a middle parting, from forehead to nape. I then took oil and start pouring lots along the parting. I rubbed my head with my palms. Then, I poured oil again on the head and just tap where I poured. I did that all over the head until I heard a chap chap sound wherever I tap. Afterwards, I massaged my hair and made the middle parting again with a wide-tooth comb and poured the oil on the length on each side. I will pour much more oil on the ends as it is the driest part of the hair. Then, I will finger comb my hair and make a bun.
Afterwards, I started preparing lunch. I had lunch with MIL and did the dishes. We then either watch tv or go on the terrace if the weather is fine. Today, it is raining so we watched tv. After some time, my MIL simply got up and I knew she will be doing my hair. She simply got the coconut oil and came behind me. She will usually not ask me anything and simply do what she has to do. She let my hair loose, combed the hair and started pouring coconut oil all over the head and tap. MIL prefers pouring and tapping and not really massaging. And that's why, whenever she oils, it will be so heavy. Afterwards, she did the length and made it dripping again. She combed my hair and made a tight bun. I asked her if she wanted to oil her hair, but she said later. She was going for a nap. So here is my day. Right now I am typing the post with oil still dripping. MIL is sleeping and I will start preparing for tea in a few hours. By then MIL will be up and I will oil and comb her hair too. As today is Friday, when the kids get back from school and have tea, MIL will call them for oiling and she will make sure to give them a very heavy oiling. The kids know that on Friday afternoon, their hair will be dripping with oil and will stay like that for the whole weekend until Sunday afternoon.
Hi again everyone, I had to break the post into 2 parts as it was too long :) I gave you maximum details. However, I want to point out something. Whenever I say oil dripping hair, it means a few drops of oil might flow on the forehead, nape or cheeks or from the braid end or bun. It will not be like some videos showed on Youtube, which are purely for commercial purposes. Nobody will pour 6-7 bottles of oil on their hair and collect it in a bucket or whatever. I hope you like my post and you are most welcome to comment and question. You are also all invited to post about your weekend oiling on the blog too. I wish you all a very nice and a very oily weekend.
ReplyDeleteHappy oiling to you all,
Namratha
Hello Namrtha, finally got to time to post. Before my mother left for the next ten days, she advised my maids to take care of the house and make sure my oiling continues and sour curd is applied before washing my hair. The maids looked at me and smiled and assured my mother that I would be well taken care of and proper oiling would be done. My mother told me to listen to the maids and not give them any trouble. The maids must be happy to be in control. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteSo I went to drop my mother of and got an hour ago. When I got back I saw the maids must have just finished oiling their hair as it was tied In casual loose bun which was waist length. They both had a flower on the hair. So I inquired where they got the flower from, they said they had gone to the market to put in an order of flower for the group oiling session. They further added that two flower ladies would be in the group tomorrow, and when they said I would be joining the group, they got excited and commented they would love to oil my hair. In total six ladies would be coming for group oiling session.
Then the maids showed me a big bottle of coconut oil they had bought. So the gift were all taken care of, bottle of oil and flowers as you suggested. Then one of the maids said to come to the living room so they can oil my hair as they just finished theirs and since it Friday time for heavy oiling. I was like can we do it later after do her as I have a slight headache and would like to rest. The maids said not to worry and go to my room and rest. After some time as I was resting one of the maids came carrying a bowl of warm oil and her loose bun in the front on one side. She said a warm oil massage would relax my head. So she came and sat beside and stroked my hair. She told me to sit in front of her and she took some oil and gently massaged my scalp. It felt so good to get my head massaged after a couple of days. She poured a lit bit more oil and started massaging my forehead. By now the other maid came and sat in front of me and took over the massaging while the other nicely combed my hair. They were saying to look forward to group oiling session as all headaches would be gone. They have a nice oiling routine planned for me till sunday. I was like I can't wash my hair, they said not till Monday and then again oil would be applied. I was like can I get a day of oiling off, they laughed and more oil was poured and massaged in my hair. After like half an hour my hair was nicely oiled and ties Ina bun. They said after dinner more oil will be applied. I felt good after oiling as my headache was gone and oiling really helped to get rid of it.
Do you have any advise Namratha ?
Please reply soon
Thanks
Hi Raj, I hope you are fine. I hope your mother has a safe trip and enjoy her travelling. I can see she is so caring dear and gave the necessary advice to the maids. I guess the maids are quite happy as well. Did the maids oil more than normal today? I know it won't be dripping, but since it's Friday, was the amount of oil on their hair more than other days? You also told me that they keep a loose bun, but won't the oil stain their clothes? As for gifts, I thought you would be buying them for the maids? You will be lucky in the hands of 6 ladies who like oiling. Do the flower ladies have long hair? Do they also oil heavily? Maybe they have a different routine from your maids and you can try asking them about their own routines too?
ReplyDeleteWhenever you have a headache, the best solution is a heavy oiling and long massage. So the maids did it right and I am sure they know that this works the best. We are all eager to hear your special routine and experience up to Sunday dear. Did they make your hair heavily oiled today? It's a normal thing for oil lovers like us to keep the hair heavily oiled (if not dripping with oil) for the whole weekend, that is up to Sunday evening (my daughters' case) or even Monday morning (my case). I hope you enjoy your oiling sessions but do keep us posted about it dear.
As I said, I might not reply during the weekends, but I will surely read. The comments will follow on Monday.
Happy oiling
Namratha
Hello Namratha, thanks for a quick response. I liked reading about your oiling routine. When you mentioned the gifts I must have misunderstood as I thought it was meant for the group and not just the maids. Now I will have to do something different as they already know the bottle and flowers is meant for the whole group. Please advise what can get as a gift for the maids ?.
ReplyDeleteTheir hair was nicely oiled, not heavily, so there is no stain. Even when they leave their open they are okay with it. I guess later more heavy oiling would be done as after dinner more oiling would be done. My hair too is nicely oiled but not too heavy. More massage was done due to headache than oiling. I will let you know about flower ladies once I meet everybody tomorrow.
Since they are staying with me in the house they can be more free and flexible about the oiling session. I am sure heavy oiling would be done later and the next two days.
Please advise soon about the gifts and sorry about the confusion, maybe I can do something nice for them over the weekend.
Thanks
Reply soon Namratha
Hi Namratha, had a great day of oiling today. It was truly a different experience. In the morning I was told to wash my hair as everybody hair has to be dry for the group oiling session. So after breakfast one of the maids told me to wait in the courtyard. She came with a bowl and comb. I was told to sit and she combed my hair, from smell I could make out it was sour curd. After combing she applied sour curd to my hair. She emptied the whole bowl and made sure all parts of my hair was taken care of. Then I was told to wait twenty mins before washing hair.
ReplyDeleteAfter I got ready I saw one of the maids drying her long long hair with a towel . After sometime both had a long dry loose braids. I noticed they were dressed nice and had a large bindi on their forehead.
It was around 11 30 in the morning when I heard the doorbell ring. A moment later I could hear some talking. One of the maids then came and asked me to meet their friends. There were two ladies in the living room Both had very long loose braids which were on the front. I was introduced to them and they said they were the flower ladies. Both of them seemed in their thirties. One of them said I have nice long hair. Then one maids said we are waiting for four more and should be here soon. The flowers ladies were also dressed nice. After some time doorbell rang again and four more ladies arrived. All of them had long loose braids. All the ladies had all most knee length hair as the braids were up to the knee. All of them dressed nicely too. One of the. seemed older maybe in her fifties. She had strands of white hair in her loose braid. She had a big bad with her
All of them proceeded to the courtyard. One of maids came and took my hand and bought me to the courtyard, and told everybody that I was going to be part of the oiling group session today. Everybody welcomed me and the older lady said as this is my first time all ladies will oil and comb my.hair and I have to follow all rules. I agreed. By now everybody started untying their loose braids. I noticed the old lady took out a big container and kept it next to her. It looked like some kind of white paste so I asked one of the maids. She said it is pure coconut oil in solid form and its what we are going to oil our hair. By now the other maid came with bowls and made sure everybody got one.
By now everybody was sitting in a circle and combing their hair. I was sitting between the maids. All the ladies had their dry hair in front of them and were nicely combing their hair giving it long strokes.
After like ten minutes the old lady poured the semi solid oil in a bowl and filled it and passed the container. All ladies had their bowls filled with oil. It had a strong coconut smell. Afterwards everybody poured some oil in their hand and started oiling their hair. All their hair was in front on one side. Only the long strands of hair were being oiled not the head. This went on for like twenty mins and everybody hair was shining with oil. Then oiling stopped and everybody started combing their hair. The old lady called to me and said its my turn and told me to come and sit in front of her. I stood and sat in front of her. She started combing my hair and said your hair will be oiled very heavily today by everybody. Then she looked at everybody and said ensure all of you oil his hair heavily, everybody agreed. After some combing she parted my hair and bent my head. She took the bowl and poured oil right in the middle of the head. Some of the oil drip on my forehead and neck area. She rubbed the oil on the neck and then started tapping my hair. She said I have good long hair and should take good care of it. By now the other ladies started combing their again applying more oil.
The old lady then massaged the oil in my scalp and combed my hair. She again took some oil and poured on my head and even oiled my ears and neck. After like fifteen mins of oiling the old lady said that I have to now sit in front of each lady and get my hair oiled. So I went sat in the front of the lady next to the old lady. She caressed my hair and took her comb and made long strokes. She told me to look up and as I did she poured oil right in middle of the forehead. Oil went straight in my hair and dripped on my face. Then she started massaging my hair. By now the other ladies had stopped oiling their hair and started oiling each other. I was such a sight. After sufficient oiling she poured a bit more oil. And I moved to the next lady, she took her comb and stroked it fast. It was kind of painful fast long strokes. She took her bowl and took a handful of oil and massaged my neck area. While massaging she said oil is good for skin and oiled my ears too. She then took a handful of oil and let it drip from her hand on my scalp. Then again massage was done and hair combed. She combed my hair to one side.
ReplyDeleteBy now all the ladies had heavily oiled hair as they were oiling each other, pouring generous amount of oil. Everybody had their hair open and shining with oil. I went and sat front of the lady next to her and it was one of the flower lady. She was being oiled by another lady and she said to sit facing her. First she massaged the oil from my forehead all over my face. Then took some more oil and msaaged my neck area. Afterwards she oiled my hair and massaged me very nicely. She talked to me a lot while oiling my hair. She combed my hair and again oiled my hair. By now it was almost 2 of oiling. All o f our hair was nicely heavily oiled. Then I noticed everybody started combing hair hair. All of them stood up and combed their long oily hair. After like fifteen minutes of combing all the ladies tied a huge oily bun on the top of their head.. They did each other bun and then dripped some more oil on the bun. One of the flower ladies told me to come and stand in front of her and she combed my hair and tied a bun and oiled it. I asked her if oiling is over. She smiled and said no we are just taking a break and will resume oiling after some tea.
During the break I noticed they all had stuck their combs in their hair above the bun. During the break one of the ladies asked the maids how come I joined the oiling session. They described to everybody how I started oiling due to dandruff. Afterwards they all encouraged me to continue oiling to keep hair healthy. After like forty mins we all again went to the courtyard. All the ladies loosened their bun and shakes their head and let their hair loose. All!of the heavily!oiled hair looked so good. Then again everybody combed their own hair. After like ten minutes the flower lady called me and made me sit in front of her, she open my bun and combed me for like ten mins. She too talked a lot to me. She even massaged my forehead, which felt good. After more oiling I moved to the next lady. She was oiling her own hair so it was all on one side. She was sitting on a higher stool so I had to sit between her legs. She stroked my hair for some time., and later poured more oil. She nice massaged my hair and every time she would bend her hair would fall over my shoulder. I could smell the strong coconut oil.
hen each of them put a flower in each other hair.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly the old ladies called me and said rules have to be followed so I have to put some decoration in my hair. I was embarrassed and before I could say anything one of the flower ladies took my hand and made me sit in front of the old lady. She took a comb combed my hair very tightly. She took some more oil and app!ed it to my scalp and combed again and tied a bun and then put a flower on top of it. Everybody was!smiling when they saw that specially the maids. I was so embarrassed.
After this the oiling session ended. Everybody looked well oiled like dripping oil. I could?d feel the oil trickling down my neck.
Then the four ladies left after some time. The flower ladies were still here. The maids they are going to be here for was while as they want to do!more oiling later so that's why no braid was tied. The maids complimented me for going through the oiling session . The flower girls were happy to and said my hair look nice heavily oiled. Then one them them noticed the oil dripping in the neck area so she massaged it. The flower lady said since we are having another oil session they would like me to join them. I said I will let them know and went to my room .
Well Namratha I hope you enjoyed the oiling session. Any inputs would be valuable.
Thanks

Hi Raj. Nice to read your post.. My self Mani.. Your post is similar to my experiance . I am also a male with waist length hair and my heavy oiling started when I was infected with lice. My neighbouring aunty made me and heavy oiling fan.. She also had a group who oiled very heavily on Saturday and Sunday afternoon followed by hair decoration. The group consists of herself her daughter and 2 maids and now me. Altogether we are 5 in group. Similar situation happened to me during my first oiling session in group. as rules had to be followed and you had flower decorated in your bun. I was also equally embarrassed as my heavily oiled hairs were tied in a tight plait and the decoration was six long jasmine gajras hanging in it.
ReplyDeleteHi Mani thanks for the post. Please do describe some of your oiling session in this blog.
DeleteHi Namratha, hope you enjoyed reading my blog. To continue from where I left off. Later one of the maids came to my room and said dinner is ready. So after dinner I was watching TV when all four came and sat in front of me. The flower ladies were in front of the maids. And the maids first took all the flowers from the hair out and opened their hair and brushed it. Then one of the maids got up and got a large jar which was filled with same coconut oil paste used in the oiling session. She said the old lady gave a us a the jar. She opened it and both maids took a handful and oiled the hair of the flower ladies. Then one of flower ladies tells me to sit in front of her as she would like to comb my hair. So I went and sat in front of her. She undid my hair and ran her fingers through my hair. After some time she took a lot of coconut paste and applied it all over my hair. She massaged the scalp nicely. After some time I sat in front of the other flower lady and she did the same routine. She massaged my neck area due to oil dripping. After like an hour the maids tied a long tight braid and put the flowers back on their hair. The string of flowers around the braid looked so nice. During the oiling session I came to know that the maids and flower ladies are very close friends. The flower ladies love heavy oiling, and they always look forward to such events.
ReplyDeleteAfter they left the maids oiled and combed each other hair. Then one of them while being oiled told me to sit in front of her. She combed my hair for a long time and tapped some paste on my head. After some time all three of us had oily tight buns.
Today morning being Sunday woke up a bit late. I went to the courtyard the maids were drying clothes.. Their oily hair was open as usual. Late afternoon I was reading a book when one of the maids came and said to meet her in the courtyard. In the courtyard she was by herself so I inquired where is the other maid and she said gone to market. She was brushing her long hair sideways. So I thought of your suggestion and also would make it up for a gift. I went and sat behind her asked her to hand over the comb to me. She had a surprised look and I took the comb and started combing her hair. First it tough to handle such thick long oily hair. I just took the hair and let it rest on my lap and combed her hair. She was very amused about the whole thing. Slowly she started instructing me how to comb correctly and I was trying to follow her directions. After like twenty mins s of combing I was getting a bit more comfortable. Suddenly we both hear some talking, and we see the other maid had come and with her were the flower ladies. The other maid came over and asked why I am brushing her hair. I told her it was my gift to both of you as you have helped me a lot and I wanted to help you both back. She was amused too and said I have to comb her hair next. I agreed. The flower girls came and sat next to me, they too requested to get their hair combed. The other maid meanwhile came with. a bowl and castor oil. She took the coconut paste in the bowl and mixed a bit of castor oil. She sat behind me and oiled my hair.
For the next 2 hours we all took turns and oiled and combed each other hair. The flowers girls both fresh flowers and I helped all of them tying in around their braids. All of us were nicely oiled.
I hope you liked the Sunday oiling session.
Thanks

Hi namratha please mention your henna routine
ReplyDeleteHi Raj, thank you for your posts during the weekend. I have gone through all of them and I need to say a big thank you for your sharing your sessions with all of us. I think you are the star of the blog. I believe they also used pure and natural coconut oil just like me as it stays semi solid at room temperature. Heavily oiled hair bun and braid looks so nice with flowers in it. Unfortunately, I don't wear flowers in my hair as it is not common here. I am sure that all of the ladies and yourself have enjoyed this weekend so much. Group oiling is something I do not have much experience dear. The only group I have is my daughters and mother in law. I believe oiling with friends is really different and the atmosphere is really good and relaxing. I would like you to just give me a summary of when the groups hair were made dripping with oil and how much oil and dripping was it? How many total oilings you had per day as well?
ReplyDeleteI am happy that you took the step to comb your maid's hair. As I told, she instructed you and I am sure with practice you will also become an expert in combing, oiling and styling as well. My weekend was very oily too and I have not washed my hair yet. I will be washing in the evening as today we have a henna session with MIL. So around 2 pm, we will both apply henna and let it sit up to 6 pm. We'll then wash and oil again. I hope you enjoyed every second of your weekend dear and thank you again for posting and sharing with us.

Hello Mani and welcome to the blog. Thank you for sharing and I see that you have been inspired to post by Raj. Thanks again Raj. It is so rare to see a man with long hair, and that too waist length! Hats off to you. It would be good if you can also share your details as Raj did Mani. Please feel free to post. Concerning lice, this is a real problem specially if you have long hair. And you know, at school times, kids are sure to get infected with lice. The best remedy for lice is heavy oiling and lice combing. It will take time but it will surely result in lice-free hair. I just wanted to share something I read about lice. Lice will usually infect clean hair. People usually tend to think that people get lice due to dirty hair. But it's the opposite. They actually choose clean hair to infect. I hope you will soon be posting your sessions with us soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Namratha
Dear Anonymous, thank you for posting. But it is hard for us to reply as we don't even know your name. Hence, I would request you to please post your name at least. I don't know if you are the same person that commented on Mani's post and then asked me to share my henna session.
ReplyDeleteComing to henna, first of all it is a very good hair conditioner. It gives the hair a thick texture and makes it healthy. However, it also stains the hair a little. But this depends on how you prepare the henna. As for me, I use henna for conditioning the hair. It will only give an auburn shade to the hair but not change the actual color. For conditioning, what I do is to mix the henna powder with 20% water and 80% oil. Oil prevents the henna to stain the hair actually. I will also apply the henna on heavily oiled hair. So MIL will prepare the henna from yesterday. Henna is best prepared in an iron bowl. For me, she will mix more oil as I said. However, the amount she will prepare is much more than needed for my hair length. But she will apply it at regular intervals until washing. So my hair will be fully coated and heavy with lots of henna. We make the henna quite thick to prevent dripping and staining of the clothes.
As for MIL, she will prepare with 90% water and black tea, and 10% of oil. She will use henna more for hair coloring than conditioning. She will also follow the same procedure except that she will wash her hair first. Then apply the henna on damp hair (without oil). She will also apply it at regular intervals until washing.
After henna, when it comes to washing, my MIL advised not to use any soap or shampoo, but only water. We will rinse the hair thouroughly and once the water flowing from the hair becomes clear, we will simply dry the hair. We will then apply lots lots of oil when the hair is still damp because the only drawback of henna is that it leaves the hair a bit dry. Then the next day will usually be an oil bath whereby the hair will be kept very heavily oiled to get back its moisture. We will wash our hair on this day and this time we will use crude soap. We don't use shampoo as it is purely chemical. Then the normal routine will start on Tuesday night again after washing. We apply henna on alternate weeks.
If any of you readers use henna, you can as well post about how you prepare and apply henna. There are lots of henna preparations. Some use coffee, others black tea... some with oil, others without oil. It would be nice to read about the different preparation recipes and their success.
I hope that the posts won't stop coming... so please contribute as much as you can all of you!
I wish you all a very good Monday

Hi All, Thanks to the blog and thanks for clarification about meanin gof heavy oiling.
ReplyDeleteToday morning after my husbdan left for office, i staarted getting ready for office. I wore pink color saree wit same color blouse
Then i opened my hair sitting in front of mirror and opened parachute coconut oil bottle and started pouring oil on my head

Thanks again for your suggestions.
Hi Vanita, thank you for your post dear. I appreciate that I was able to help you out. Apologies I am replying only now but today was henna day and was quite busy. I am sure that heavily oiled hair bun will suit your style and professional requirement also. Was your hair completely dry before oiling? How much oil did you apply? Can you describe how your oil your hair? What do you also mean by all wet look? I am sure you will get lots of compliments for your new hairstyle today. Do keep posting and keep us updated about your oiling routines too. By the way, how long is your hair Vanita?
ReplyDeleteThank you again,
Namratha
Hello Namratha, Thanks for your kind words, it would not have been possible with your encouragement and advice. During the weekend we had two oiling sessions on each day. We already had dripping oiled hair on Saturday during the group session and then more oiling was done due to the flower girls. On Sunday afternoon, hair was oiled heavily between all of of us including the flower ladies then it was dripping with oil. Since they like heavy oiling the maids made sure enough oiling was done. The flowers do look good on oiled hair.
ReplyDeleteToday morning I was expecting to wash my hair. The maids said since I was staying home not to wash it. They oiled my hair a little bit in the morning, more combing was done. They were so happy that I combed their hair. In the afternoon I combed both their hair and one of them sat beside me while I was combing the other to help me. Then more oiling was done. The maids told me that the flower ladies would be joining us more often for oiling session. We all used the pure coconut oil for oiling. I am not sure how much oil was used during oiling sessions. I told the maids to use flowers more in their hair as it looks good. They told me they will put flowers more often and the flower ladies might be coming down later. I was happy to hear it as the flower ladies make oiling session more fun. They are younger than I thought, and make oiling session more lively.
That's all for know
Thanks
Please rep!y soon
Hi Raj, you are most welcome dear. You have really booseted the blog with your posts and I hope others will follow your steps soon. Thanks for giving more details and from what I can read, the weekend was mostly dripping with oil. Whenever we are posting, we need to differentiate between heavy oiling and oiling till dripping. As Vanita asked last time, for me heavy oiling is till the hair is completely wet but not dripping. It's like a few more drops and it will start to drip. While oil dripping hair is like a few drops flowing from the hair (on forehead, cheeks and neck mostly). I still say that oil will not be flowing like showed in some videos.
ReplyDeleteYour maid are right to keep your hair oiled. I also didn't wash my hair today but applied heavy henna. I will wash in around 2 hours now, with plain water only and again oil till dripping as I explained earlier. I am sure your maids will be very happy that you are now good at combing their hair. Next would be to oil and style their hair too. We have a few common points as I also prefer using pure and natural coconut oil which is best for the hair. Do keep us posted about any other oiling sessions you might be having dear. It's always a pleasure to read your posts. Being a man, you like heavily oiled hair so much. It's sad to see how young ladies hate oiling nowadays. Keep it up dear.
Namratha
Dear Namratha. Thanks for your post. This is how my heavy oiling started.
ReplyDeletei keep long hairs and Few months back i was infected with nits and lice As a stay alone i have no one to take care of it . So i discussed this with my neighbours daughter who is very close to me. She initally laughted at me, but then told me she will come next day afternoon and do some thing. I wondered what she was going to do. Next day she came in theafternoon and showed me the lice comb she had bought for me. She asked me to bring coconut oil bottle and sit facing my back to her. She opened my plait and started searching for nits in my hair by moving herfingers in my hair. After some time she oiled my hair vary heavily and started combing my hairs with lice come. She found many and handed over to me for killing. This
continued for about 1 hour until no more lice were
found in lice comb. Then she tied my hair in bun
and asked me to clean my clothes and keep the comb. She told she will repeat this after 2 or 3 days so as to get rid of lice. I thanked her. I immediatly felt a huge relief by itching scalp. after another 2 sessions i got much relief. Atlast i thought i was free from lice. But again after a week i felt lot of itching and so went to her home to ask for licecombing. Her mother (my neighbouring aunt) opened the door and told me shehad gone to some relatives place for 2 days. She also told me that her daughter had discussed my lice issue to her and she can do next day morning for me if i dont mind. I smiled and she asked me to bring my lice comb and come to her house. Next day was sunday i woke early and had bath took the lice comb and went to her place,. She also followed the same routine as her daughter did but oiled my hair more heavily till ddrippin. It was around 2 hour of lice combing from her.
She then had asked me not to wash my hair and come in afternoon when she and her 2 maids will make me sit in our common balcony or terrece and do licecoombing. Also asked me to buy 2 more lice
comb and bottle of castoroil which she will mix with
coconut oil and apply in my hair before licecombing,
I purchased licecombs and castoroil. And then in afternoon I had oiling and lice combing session with aunt and maids. From then onwards we have regular oiling session every sat and sun followed by hair braiding and decoration.
Regards
Mani
Hi Namratha, To clarify further hair was oiled till dripping on Saturday and Sunday. Monday afternoon the maids oiled my hair but not heavily. Even they did not oil their much. They said as the flower ladies are late evening we will oil heavily then. The maids were asking me that as we oil till dripping on weekends which is 2 days, we should include a weekday too. Namratha please advise on this issue. Is another day neccessary ?.
ReplyDeleteLate evening around 6 the flower girls arrived. Their long hair oiled from last night was hanging in a loose bun. As the maids were little busy, they told the flower ladies to oil and comb my hair. One of the maids gave the flower girls the huge bottle of oil and said oil nicely.
So both of them untied their hair and sat behing me. They poured a good amount of oil and started massaging. I asked them of their routine. They said as they have to be at work early they only apply little bit of oil. They look forward to ooling group sessions as more oiling could be done. After some time one of them sat in front of me and got her combed. For an hour we combed and oiled each other hair.
Then the maids joined us and the flower ladies oiled both maids. By the time we were done all of us were heavily oiled.
Thanks

hi all,
ReplyDeletejust found this blog and thought i'd say hi!
I have been suffering from massive hair fall after taking the progesterone ill for a few years and after talking to my mum, she suggested hair oiling. I have been using vatika cactus oil and the vatika coconut oil as its within my budget but I have to say my hair is so mositurised and soft- for the first time in ages.
I remember my aji having oiled hair and it was waaay thicker than mine and am hoping I might regain my old thick hair again!
I live in New Zealand and we have places where there are indian shops where I can get indian products , thanks goodness!
I really enjoyed reading the posts and am definitely going to oil my hair once a week!
any one have good tips for herbs etc good for hair fall?
- my name is mini
I meant progesterone pill! oops!- mini
ReplyDeleteHello Mani, thank you for your post and apologies for my late reply. Yesterday was a busy day for me. Thank you for sharing details with us. As I told before, lice is a real problem. But with continuous hair oiling and lice combing, you are sure to get rid of them. So I would advise you to keep your hair heavily oiled daily if possible. And also wash your hair as often as you can. You can oil daily and wash on alternate days. Your neighbour's daughter did a good job for sure. But she oiled your hair very heavily, and I believe it was not till dripping. Her mom did a heavier oiling as she made your hair dripping with oil. On Sunday afternoon, did all of your have oil dripping hair (maids, neighbour's mom and yourself)? What routine are you actually following? Hoping that you share more with us.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Namratha
Hi Raj, apologies for not replying yesterday. I believe oiling till dripping could be done as from Friday night and up to Sunday evening or Monday morning (depending on your choice). You can schedule another oil dripping session on Wednesday, which is the middle of the week also. It's true that everyone has his/her own busy schedule. But like I always say, your hair is like a plant. It requires care daily and just as a plant requires water to grow beautifully, your hair needs oil to grow and maintain its beauty. Hence, a good oiling and massage can take around 20 - 30 min which I think can be taken out from 24 hours for sure. Lots of people tell me they do not have time to oil. Oiling can be done while watching tv, while being outside in the garden relaxing or simply before going to bed. As in the case of the flower ladies, given their tight scheduled, they still found time to oil their hair. But they did it lightly. I believe they could have done it heavily as well. But that will depend on them. Little oil is better than no oil at all.
ReplyDeleteNamratha
thanks so much for reply and for tips, do you mean fenugreek seeds in the oil? i'll try that too as i have them in my kitchen! haha also i will go and try to get some pure coconut oil from the indian shops as most of the coconut cooking oil we have is really expensive in nz! i'm going to oil my hair with my usual oil tomorrow and will leave it in for a few hours, if i sleep in it i'm liable to spread it all over my boyfriend lol.
ReplyDeleteits great reading everyones stories and its funny as my mother and aji never tried to oil my hair at all. they are Indians born in fiji so maybe its something they felt they couldn't do in a western country like nz, who knows. i'm glad to bring back an Indian tradition to my life though-as I do in my cooking. keep up the tips and stories! i also liked your facebook page!

Hello Namratha, First let me write this down, as I forget to mention it every time. Did you know that coconut oil can be used as a mouthwash. You swirl it around in your mouth like 10 mins and then spit it out. It is supposed to clean the teeth, reduce germs and whiten teeth too, I came to know this during the group oiling session.
ReplyDeleteTuesday morning I was really looking forward to get my hair washed as for 3 days I had oil in my hair. So in a hurry I washed my hair without the maids knowing. They were disappointed that I washed my hair without applying sour curd and oil. They said its not right to break our oiling ritual. So they did not apply oil on Tuesday. Today since I had errands I was out, on the way back I was passing through the market where I bumped into the flower ladies. They asked me how come my hair is not oiled. I told them what happened, they said the same thing that oiling is very important and routine should be followed.
Then they said later in the evening they will stop by and all all of us will have oiling session. I did not realize how important oiling is to the maids. Please advise Namratha.
Thanks

Dear Namratha, thanks for reply..
ReplyDeleteMe Aunt and her maids have Group oiling sessions on every Saturday and Sunday and its till dripping. Lice combing is done only on me by the maids as I only suffer from lice. But maids and aunt are very helpful and nearly comb my hair with nitcomb for 2 hours. I really enjoy the session. We have followed this routine since several weeks. Like u said Maids and aunt also suggested me to daily oil and do self licecombing which I follow. I daily oil my hair heavily twice, once in morning and then in evening followed by self licecombing for an hour in my balcony. As I work from home I get proper time for this routine. I wash my hair every third day and again oil it after drying it. So its been long I have kept my hair dry for more than 2 hrs.
But the Saturday and Sunday ritual of oiling braiding and hair decoration is something which I enjoy a lot.
Regards
Mani
Hey Priya here! I was a but busy because of my exams so I apologise for not posting. But in these busy days, my mother didn't let my hair oiling session go for a toss. As today I got done with my exams as I returned back home after having lunch before I went for a nap my mother made sure to oil my hair heavily infact till dripping and then she tied two tight braids so that its convenient for me to make my hair as my hair is very thick. So today I got a head massage till dropping and I'll wash my hair on Sunday and on Sunday Evening after dinner my mother will oil my hair again very heavily but not till dripping. Dripping hair oiling happens only in the morning and afternoons. On this Sunday my father will also get a proper oil head massage. He doesn't like to oil his hair but he has perfect hair. And his hair is not turning grey as well. But as it's a Sunday and he'll be home. My grandmother has decided that everyone should have heavily oiled hair on Sunday. So before eating breakfast we'll have oiling sessions. Pleage give your views on the same. Looking forward for your routine story as well!
ReplyDeletehiya all,
ReplyDeletejust a quick question- in nz we have ' extra virgin coconut oil' , 'refined coconut oil' and 'cold pressed coconut oil' and plain old cooking coconut- any help on which one to get for hair oiling? very confused! apparently the extra virgin has the smell and taste of coconut whilst the cooking one doesn't...
thanks - mini
Hi Mini, thanks for your posts on the blog dear. Yes, I mean fenugreek seeds! You just have to put them in your oil bottle and let the bottle be in the sun for a max of time. Otherwise, you can pour the oil in a bowl, add the fenugreet and warm it in the microwave or even stove. Then just pour it back in the bottle together with the seed. However, this may change the fragrance a little, but that's not a real problem. You mentioned a good point about oling at night but this might disturb the other person sleeping by our side. Usually after oiling, you can braid your hair and this will also protect the hair. I always braid my hair before sleeping. Yes, I believe that since your family and aji are living in a foreign country, they wanted to do as the others and that's why they did not try to oil your hair. But if you ask them about hair oiling, I am sure they will tell you all the benefits and they will be happy that you adopted this routine. It's always good to keep our culture wherever we are, but of course compromising on some little things to fit in the country as well. What is your exact routine Mini? Do you oil lightly or heavily? Or maybe till dripping like us? As you said, I am also thankful to everyone for their contribution on the blog and I hope we sustain the posts and keep the blog lively.
ReplyDeleteExtra virgin coconut oil is the best as it has practically no additives to the oil. I would suggest to go for that one, depending on your budget as well. It usually remains solid/semi-liquid at room temperature. It will bear the smell of coconut oil but it's best for the hair. I hope this helps you dear.
Take care,
Namratha
Hi Raj, yes coconut oil has many virtues, be it for hair, skin and whole body. What you are describing is commonly called 'oil pulling' but this is not practiced by many people. If you read ancient texts of Yoga/Ayurveda, coconut oil (or other natural herbal/seed oil) is a major ingredient. Several treatments/therapies like Shirodhara is based on oiling.
ReplyDeleteI understand the reaction of the maids and flower ladies. Oiling is not simply oiling, but its a whole process and a way of living. It shows caring and affection. I believe they were not happy as they advised you to follow something which you didn't. Even my MIL gets annoyed when I get late in oiling my hair or my daughter's hair. They are usually very strict on this. Again, oiling the hair for a lady specially shows discipline. We all make mistakes and we all learn from our mistakes. Maybe today evening, you can ask them to oil your hair heavily or till dripping and that you repent for your mistake, you will allow them to oil your hair every single day until Sunday or Monday next. Think of some gifts as a token - maybe coconut oil or anything else that might be pleasant to them. You can also tell them that this evening, you will take care of everyone's hair to excuse yourself for breaking the rules and you do all the oiling, combing and styling. But try to follow what they tell you as they are doing it for your own good Raj. I know it was not on purpose, but you can simply ask them before undertaking anything for your hair from now on. I am sure all will go on fine.
Take care,
Namratha
Hi Mani, thank you for sharing more details with us. It is quite common in India that heavily oiled hair is done mostly by lower class people, like maids. I believe there is nothing like class/caste or whatever they might want us to believe. We are all equal as we are all humans and in front of God, we are simply human beings. I just wanted to make that clear. But what we also see, is that those people tend to have much better hair - thicker, longer and darker. Out of personal experience, I know some 'modern' families in India that have adopted the western lifestyle. They will have maids working for them and very often, they will ask the maids to take care of their own hair as the maids' hair are much healthier. But still, they will impose on what to do and what not to do. Westernization is a phenomenon that we cannot control for sure. But that does not mean that we should forget all of our traditions and culture. Anyway, this was just my personal opinion and I hope I didn't hurt anyone by saying this.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to be able to follow your hair oiling routine given that you work from home. Time is a major factor that limits oiling as well. Even I keep my hair dry just after oiling and again after one or two hours, I will oil heavily. If one day I do not oil my hair, I will feel unwell and have a bad headache as I am so used to heavy oilings. Keep sharing Mani.
Namratha
Hi Priya, thank you for posting and I hope that your exams went on fine. It seems that your mom has taken over your 'hair' now and she will make sure they are taken good care of. That's really nice dear and you are lucky that your mom dedicates times for your oiling routine. Twin braids or single braid are really good hairstyles and are also very good for the hair as it protects the hair. I am glad to note that your mom is oiling your hair like we do, that is till dripping. Maybe you can also share how she did the oiling and all that you talked during the oiling. During hair oiling, it's always a time where we can speak to each other. I note that you will wash your hair on Saturday or Sunday now. Will you be oiling on the other days? Maybe your mom will decide to oil your hair daily?
ReplyDeleteHair oilig for men is another thing. Most men will not be oiling their hair as they say it's a girl thing. Even my husband never allowed me to oil his hair. But once we talked about that while oiling with MIL and she said she will take care of that. As a kid, whether you are a boy or a girl, your mom would oil your hair till dripping. But when you grow older, boys stop oiling altogether while girls reduce the amount and frequency of oiling. So from now on, MIL oils my husband's hair on Saturday evening and only if he doesn't have to go out. Unfortunately, mens' hair are also more prone to damage as they use a lot of styling products like gel. But applying oil from time to time will help to reduce the damage caused by gel and other styling products. During weekends, that is as from Friday afternoon, all ladies will have oil dripping hair. On Saturday it will be the same but Saturday evening, even my husband will have his hair oiled by his mom. Sunday morning, hubby will wash his hair earliest. While for my daughters, they will wash on Sunday afternoon. As for me, I usually wash on Monday evening (if we do not plan to henna) or Monday afternoon (if we plan to henna).
Thank you Priya and keep posting
Namratha
Hi Namratha,
ReplyDeleteThanks again for reply!
I'm quite new to hair oiling but I have been parting my hair in rows and horizontally and applying plenty oil to the parts and massaging in, its a good arm workout! then I usually apply oil to the length and it's quite wet but not dripping and comb through.
I usually just use a pin and pin it up- my hair is quite thin so this works for me.
It's about as wet as I can handle it and I often oil it after work and go about my usual things- making dinner etc, I try to leave it on as long as possible and usually wash it out.
I don't think I could get away with going to work with it oily but when I don't have work the next day i'll leave it in a bit longer. like some of the others time to do my hair is sometimes limited! I still have noticed the difference in how moisturised my hair looks and feels though! yay!
I'll def try the methi as I was having a yarn to my mum and she was talking about how her mother in Fiji used to make her own coconut oil and many other things to so that was quite cool. she has passed on but she sounded like a cool lady:)
Thanks for the recommendations and I'll keep reading and posting!
happy oiling everyone!
-Mini
Hi Mini, thanks for your quick reply and thanks for sharing the details. I agree it takes time and a lot of effort to take care of the hair, specially if you have it long and thick. That's why I am always happy when my mother in law or my daughters will ask to oil my hair. MIL does one of the best massages. Good to know that you oil quite heavily and if I can advise, after oiling always use a wide-tooth comb. After a heavy oiling, the best style is a bun or updo. Afterwards, the hair can be braided or french-braided. My elder daughter wears a french-braid for school with oiled hair. It makes the hair look so nice even when heavily oiled. So many you can try that once at work, of course it will depend on you and your company rules. It is also good to leave the oil overnight if possible. We are all happy that you already noticed the improvements due to oiling and I hope you will follow your strict routine of hair oiling. With time, your hair will grow longer and thicker too.
ReplyDeleteDo try the Methi seeds and let us know as well. Making coconut oil is quite easy but takes times. And of course, you will need to coconut fuit. In India, it is still a common practice (if I am not wrong - maybe bloggers from India may comment on this please). Does your mom follow any of the routine too?
Thank you,
Namratha
Hi Namratha,
ReplyDeleteNo worries, in NZ its late at night and I'm relaxing at home!
My work doesn't have any rules as such- it's just that here it would look really odd to most people, it just isn't done in nz- as another commenter said- people would prob just think I hadn't washed my hair for weeks and that I was gross! So for me not worth the stares and having to explain myself to others at work! I have been out while my hair is oiled though- and I've just put it back in a bun and that was ok and less worrisome as I wasn't at work.
My mum seems to know a bit about hair oiling but I can't ever remember her with her hair oiled! She is more into cooking than into beauty stuff! Haha!
I am really hoping that with this routine eventuallly, my hair will grow back thicker as the medication I was on really made my hair fall so thanks for all the tips !
-Mini
oh and yes- I use a wide tooth comb! :)

Hi Namratha, thanks for the timely advice. Late evening the flower girls came over and the maids and them had talk. One of the flower girls came to my room and said to meet them for oiling and also advised me to follow their instructions in the future. I said okay and joined them. The maids had already oiled their hair, so were oiling the flower girls. I went and sat in front of the flower girl. She took the oil bottle and poured oil on my head. Both the flower oiled my hair hair very heavily. After oiling the maids told me to comb the flower girls hair. So while I was combing the flower girls. Bother maid said being me and combed and oiled my hair. During oiling they all talked of how oiling is important, and beneficial. The flower girls told the maids to oil my hair till dripping as I had missed one day. The maids agreed and said now on wed will be oil dripping oiling for me.
ReplyDeleteThe flower girls also said that they will make an effort to join us on weekends as they want to to make a daily weekend routine instead of group oiling session. After oiling everybody had long oily braids.
I told them it was a mistake and from now on they oil my whenever they want.
Today morning I went to the courtyard and one of the maids had a bowl of sour curd ready. She mixed it with some oil. While applying it to my hair, she was saying that again in the evening oiling would be done heavily and from Friday no washing hair till monday morning.
About your gift idea, I think I will ask the flower ladies for an advice.
Will post more soon.
Thanks again.

Hi Priya here! I read your post of Mehti seeds. My mom puts Mehti seeds heats up the oil and then oils my hair with that oil.Mehti seeds help to make your hair stronger and thicker. And it adds to shine. Come up to my piling routine.Today in the afternoon my granny oiled my hair because my mother was a bit busy cooking. I just loved the way she oiled my hair. Thought she oiled it till dripping. And yes, my mom would oil my hair everyday not heavily everyday but. Only on Sunday's and Wednesdays heavily till dripping. And I need to tell you one thing, that now I don't even feel shy to go out in oiled hair. Even though it looks little awkward but now I'm getting used to it. I went out for dinner with my family yesterday. Before going my mother gave me head massage and it was till dripping as it was Wednesday. But then too I didn't feel shy to get out. My mom tied a normal single braid when we were out. And once I got back home before sleeping my grandmother tied two braids for me. And now as I don't have my college, I am in two braids only because my hair is very thick to be in one braid. And coming to the point of my dad getting his hair oiled. So yesterday when we got back home after making my two heavily oiled braids my granny asked my dad to sit in front of her and to get his hair oiled. And he couldn't say a word because once she says something my dad need to follow that. So even his hair was heavily oiled (not till dripping) and she combed my dad's hair with a side parting.

And he couldn't say a word because once she says something my dad need to follow that. So even his hair was heavily oiled (not till dripping) and she combed my dad's hair with a side parting.
DeleteDear Namratha, thanks for reply..
ReplyDeleteYes as you said we should followed our traditional and should not adopt westernisation. Oiling hair is something which should be followed by all iindividuas. Rightly you said we all are equal and no one is superior or inferior.
My heavily oiling hairs started when I was infected with lice and I feel it has happened for good. Thanks to aunt, her daughter and maids. When we sit for our sessions on Saturday and Sunday it is one of the most enjoyable moments.being a member of this group I consider myself as one of them and obey them. We all follow the same routine. Everyone has to oil each other and comb each other. Oiling is done till dripping. Then i am to sit in middle of the group. Maids come and sit on my sides facing my back. My hairs are divided in to two parts from the middle and each maid starts picking nits from their parts. This goes for around 30 mins. Then both of them again apply oil on their part and starts lice combing. So at a time I get double lice combing. This goes for an hour and then finally one of them sits in front of me and my hairs are inverted in front and she does reverse lice combing. That is very painful. After my licecombing session oil is applied one again to everyones hair. Then combing is done and finally everyone's hair are braided and decorated in similar style.
This is our sat and sun afternoon routine and we also follow this during holidays with special decoration.
During weekdays as I said I oil my hair twice daily followed by self licecombing for an hour. Without oil I also feel uncomfortable.
Regards
Mani
Hi Mini, yes you are right on this point but this will be in the beginning only. Afterwards, once you explain about oiling and the benefits, they might simply start adopting your routine. What I noticed also on Youtube for example, is that many non-Indians people are now adopting hair oiling. While in India, it is the reverse trend. I believe other people are realizing the importance with time. I am sure that your mom and aji must know a lot about hair oiling for sure. Maybe since you lived in a foreign country, they prefered adapting their lifestyle and not oil their hair. Cooking is usually another passion for Indian ladies, specially housewives like me. Don't worry dear, I am sure your hair will improve a lot but you must also believe in the routine as the mind is really so powerful. Keep on sharing about your oiling routine dear.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Namratha
Hey this is Janvi here! The problem is that, first I used to hate oiling and my mom used to force me and she used to scold me. And when I enevr used to listen she uses to oil my hair when I was asleep. But now I love oiling and my mother doesn't know about the same. I don't know how to tell her to oil my hair.
ReplyDeleteHi Raj, thank you for sharing your updates. I am sure you will not repeat the same mistake again now. From what you told, the maids and flower ladies oiled their hair heavily only, not dripping? And only yours was made till dripping? And this will be so on all Wednesdays now. Won't they be oiling till dripping on Wednesdays? Maybe you should encourage them too. It's good that you adopt the habit of not washing your hair from Friday to Sunday evening or Monday morning. It would be also good that all of you follow the same routine so that it is easier not to miss out anything. So, as from Friday night to Sunday evening, the hair will be kept till dripping only. Then the whole week except Wednesday will be heavily oiled. I don't think you should ask them about the gift as you need to provide each of them with a gift as a token of mistake from your side. I hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteHappy oiling to you all as it's Friday today!!
Namratha
Hi Priya, you are very right about the Methi seeds and it is well known in India. Elderly people are so good at oiling and massaging as I always say. Glad to note that your mom oils your hair everyday. I guess she will oil heavily but not till dripping. As you said, dripping will be done on Sundays and Wednesdays, which is very good. But I believe you can adopt the same routine as me with oil till dripping right from Friday night dear. What do you think about it? I am also very glad that now you don't mind going out with oiled hair. It's difficult only in the beginning and that too becasue we think of what others might say. But this is our own hair and we are simply caring for it. As I tell my daughters, those who will make negative comments are simply jealous that we have the courage to take care of our hair no matter what. Priya, did you mean that you went out with oil dripping hair? Braids or twin braids are very good and protective styles for hair.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that your grandma has decided to take the 'rule' on oiling. In my home, my MIL has the upper hand on everyone, even my husband as I described earlier. I am happy that your dad did not refuse as well. This shows he respects his mom a lot. Congratulations for that!
Do share your weekend oilings Priya
Namratha
Mani, I am happy you have the same opinion as me on these issues. As you said, you need to be thankful to those persons who help you. Maybe you can gift them something like an oil bottle to show your appreciation, as I suggested to Raj. I agree that reverse lice combing is quite painful but you need to go through that to get rid of the lice. I hope that with the continuous oiling and lice combing, you are now more relieved. Once the infection reduces, you can keep the lice combing on alternate days. Lice combing can be damaging for the hair and that's also another reason we need to oil very heavily before doing lice combing. When you get used to oiling, you will not be able to stop that as you said. Oiling is our drug :)

Dear Namratha, thanks for your reply.
DeleteSorry for delay in writing, was a bit busy with some work. Thanks for your suggestion, I would definitely buy a gift (parachute oil bottle) for each of them. Yes as you said oil is our drug. Daily heavy oiling is something last for me to miss. Reverse licecombing is painful but is necessary so I do not mind maids doing it on me. Even I myself do some reverse lice ccombin during my session. I know lice combing can damage hairs but if you oil very heavily that damage can be overcomed. Already my lice infection has reduced but licecombing has become a part of my daily routine like oiling and I will continue with this even if I am lice free. Every day morning 10.30 and evening 6.15 I take all the stuff( oil bottle, 2 licecombs and small stool in my balcony. I sit on the stool, open my oily braid, oil them again heavily, comb it with normal comb and then an hour of licecombing. Then I tie my hair in a tight bun or single or 2plaits. I wash my hair every third day morning then towel dry it and again same routine. Every weekend and holidays oiling session with the group followed by styling and decoration. During festivals we have special hair decoration. Like today being gudi padwa after our oiling session everyone's hair were tied in a tight bun. Then aunt announced that today being a big festival we will have special hair decoration. First my friend (aunts daughter) was called and she sat in front of aunt facing her back. Aunt opened a bag containing packets of jasmine gajras and veni with silver threads. She took a veni tied it round her daughters bun. Then she took 6 long jasmine gajras and pinned 3 on each side of the bun with hairpins. Then she did this with both the maids, meanwhile my friend groomed aunts hair in same way. So all of their hairs were groomed except mine. At last aunt looked at me and I knew what to do. Even though I was a bit reluctant to do so I quietly went and sat my back facing aunt and allowed her to tie the stuff in my hair. Enjoyed the group oiling session.
My only problem now is nits( lice eggs) as I myself cannot remove it from hair although lice can be easily removed with heavy oiling and regular licecombing. Its only during group session the maids search for nits and remove it. But that's not a big issue.

Hi Janvi, thank you for posting. I noticed you had posted before in the blog. So welcome back dear. Indeed when we are young, we do not realize that everything our parents do or advise is for our own good. And when we grow up, little by little we start realizing that. You told us that your mom used to oil your hair while you were sleeping? Can you tell us about that more? Whenever I play with my daughters' hair when they are sleeping, they get woken up.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your actual routine, or the routine that your mom has adopted for you? Does your mom follow a specific routine? A mom and a daughter shares such a beautiful relationship. You just need to know how to maintain it through good communication, obedience and respect dear. The direct way is the best way. Simply go to her and tell her that you realized that she was right since the beginning and that you are sorry for being difficult with her for oiling. And tell her that from now on, you will allow her to care for your hair whenever and in whatever way she wants. I am sure she will be more than happy dear. And the best would be to decide about a common routine for both of you and both sticks to it. For me, oiling my MIL's hair is just a way to show how much I appreciate her and love her. And I am sure your mom will feel the same. Just don't think of anything and go ahead and confess to her Janvi. But do keep us udpated also.
Namratha
Hey Janvi here! I didn't really have a oiling routine since last 5 years. Before that I had to let my other oil my hair forcefully. And if I never used to allow her to oil my hair as I said she oiled my hair while I was asleep. She used to oil it very heavily when I used to sleep because it was compulsory in our school to go with oiled hair...! But now I love oiling my hair so today in the afternoon my mom was oiling he row hair and I asked her to oil my hair too and she was very happy to see that change in me! She oiled my hair and I just confessed and I apologiesed. Even my other puts Methi seeds.!She oiled my hair till dripping and it was soothing after that I oiled my mothers hair and she tied a tight braid for me and I did the same for her!
ReplyDeleteHi Janvi, thanks for your quick reply. Glad that oiling is now part of your daily life and routine. I am very happy that you followed my advice and that now your relationship with your mother is so pleasant. I am sure she is more than happy. Nice to hear that your mom oiled your hair till dripping dear. Can you please share details about how she oiled your hair? Does your mom usually oil her own hair till dripping too? Did you oil her hair till dripping today? Please give us maximum details about the oiling process as everyone has different processes. Maybe with the help of everyone we can set a standard oiling procedure for everyone of us. Thank you again for sharing your post dear and keep on posting about your oiling sessions!

Hello Namratha, On weekends all of us will be oiling till dripping. Today morning the maids said to wash my hair as oiling would done heavily in the evening and no washing hair till Monday. Even they had washed their hair. In the afternoon we all sat and combed each other hair for some time and then the maids applied oil on each other. I would comb their hair after their oiling. After sufficient oiling their hair. They bought oiled my hair. During oiling I asked them about oling till dripping on Wednesday, and they said they would be oiling till dripping on wed too and even the flower ladies. They said the flower ladies would join us on weekends too. The idea of not washing hair is totally the maids idea. Today I got a chance to go to market and I bought four gifts for each of them. Right now all of our hair is oiled heavily. I am sure more oiling and combing would be done later while watching TV and/or if the flower girls show up.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Hey Priya here! As you wanted to know how my mother oils my hair here it is , first she pours a lot of oil in the middle of the head and then uses that oil to rub it all over my head ans massages with the same oil for another 10 minutes. After that she pours oil on the sides and then rubs that oil and then she asks me to look down and she puts a lot of oil down and then after massaging my whole hair and puts little more oil just as a last layer of oil and then combs my hair. She does lice combing as well. After that she makes a middle parting and then ties twin braids and then she puts little oil in my ears and puts cotton. She asks me to remove cotton after getting up in the morning. She also massages my face with oil because it helps somehow( I don't know for what it helps) I really don't like it when she massages my face with oil and when puts oil in my ears but if I deny for the same, she puts more oil in my ears and massages my face with more oil also then she applies more oil to my hair as well..

Hello Namratha, Today morning Saturday, I was in the courtyard with the maids. Both their hair was open and I combed it for them as they asked. Then more oiling was done to all our hair. They said in the afternoon with the flower ladies we would all use pure coconut oil paste.
ReplyDeleteIn the afternoon we were watching TV when the flower girls arrived. They were happy to see my hair heavily oiled. While all of them were untying their hair I went and got the gift packets for them. Each packet had a big bottle of coconut oil as you suggested and a comb. All of them were surprise and very happy. One of the flowers girls now we would oil our hair more than dripping. So we all went to the court yard. The flowers girls said before the maids and started oiling their hair. Both the maids had full bowl of pure coconut paste. I was combing the maids long oily hair. After some time one of the flower girls told me to sit in front of her for oiling. She took a handful of paste and rubbed it in my hair. She even gave me a neck massage as oil was dripping. Then she asked the maids if they ever massage my face and hands. The maids said not always. The flower girl said as oil is good for doing we should massage the face and hands. The maids agreed and said we should do it. So while oiling the flower girl also massaged my face.
Then we all took turns combing and oiling each other hair. After like 2 hours all four of them tied their long hair in a big oily bun on top of their head. We took a break for tea and would resume oiling later. The flower girl also had bought flowers to decorate everybody's hair. During the break I suggested to the flower girls they should oil their more everyday instead of lightly. They said they would love to but due to tight work schedule they cannot spend that much time oiling. One of maids suggested they can come here after work and get their hair heavily oiled. What do you think Namratha?
We resumed oiling and the maids opened one of the coconut bottle I gave them and oiled my hair. Everybody oiled their dripping. In the end all four of them had long oily tight braids. Then one of the flower girls got a long string of flowers and wrapped it around the braids and put a flower on the side. All four of them had their hair nicely decorated with flowers.
More oiling to continue on Sunday.
Thanks
